  1. I guess I don't understand your point here. Was the cause of Lee's injury germane to Carroll's point? Was the discussion merely about Cub injuries or effects of shoulder injuries to first basemen? Based on what was provided above, I don't know that that is adequate to impugn journalists.
  2. Hendry understands that he can make trades with teams other than Florida and Baltimore, right?
  3. Unless my memory is wrong, I think we had a poor bullpen in 2003. I recall always fearing that the 'pen would blow the game. I think they were the reason why Wood didn't win more than 14 games that year. The main bullpen guys were had the following numbers: Joe Borowski 68 0 2 2 33 0 1 68.1 53 20 5 19 66 8.69 0.0 1.05 2.63 Mark Guthrie 65 0 2 3 0 0 10 42.2 40 13 6 22 24 5.06 0.0 1.45 2.74 K. Farnsworth 77 0 3 2 0 0 19 76.1 53 28 6 36 92 10.85 0.0 1.17 3.30 M. Remlinger 73 0 6 5 0 0 17 69.0 54 28 11 39 83 10.83 0.0 1.35 3.65 Of course, guys like Alfonseca and Cruz struggled out of the pen. However, these four certainly held their own.
  4. Years are starting to run together for me. However, didn't we have a pretty good bullpen in 2003, when Wood and Prior were ridden hard? Certainly not the best, but as I recall, several guys in the pen had good years, and Dusty had his righty/lefty tools he values so much.
  5. Not really news. Both Will Carroll and Steve Stone alerted me to this situation weeks ago, despite being blasted as "speculation" and "having no foundation in reality." [sigh] But we all know how them CUBS management types lie !! [/sigh] If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

  7. Someday, I hope my son will take the interest in baseball I have and ask me about the Steroid Era. As such, the book interests me as it evidently provides much more in depth information on the topic. Unless a book is known or rumored to be poorly written, I think it is silly to summarily decide whether you will or won't consider reading it, particularly when it hasn't even been released. More information is always better than less. Always. I never object to reading books that don't necessarily speak to my political or sociological leanings. IMO, that is how we broaden ourselves. Its easy to read materials you are predisposed to liking or agreeing with. One's willingness to consume information that is not necessarily in line with their attitudes is admirable to me.
  8. Cover our respective butts, or ignore the obvious cloud around Bonds incredible stretching program? While it may be human nature to cover for ourselves, I think it is a difficult premise to suggest that all of us would approach the issue as Baker wants us to believe he did.
  9. *sigh* Everyone needs a cause... GO BOBBY!
  10. Brandon is on 'roids? http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2005/fantasy/07/27/grey.matter/t1_mccarthy_all.jpg
  11. Remember the ESPN Mag article. Bonds didn't lift more to get bigger in the off season, he just stretched more. :stickman:
  12. My guess (and its only a guess) is that the crackdown has already claimed or had an effect on the majority of violators. I remember last year, late into the season, a report from ESPN that Bonds still hadn't been tested despite the fact that the Giants had been tested twice by MLB. While I understand that players on the DL are still subject to testing, I don't know how that is reconciled with players that are prescribed steroids as part of their recovery. It seems like a built in defense, and terribly convenient for Bonds and baseball. You may be right. Perhaps my idea of violators is skewed by they lack of hulk-like behemoths like Bonds. However, I think there is now too much to lose for a massive number of players to be in violation. Then again, I'm the one who thinks Steve Stone is generally dead on, so...
  13. Just for that I'm taking Eddie away. In light of your historic avoidance of avatar and signature pics in the fear that it will divulge your true identity and somehow provide GPS coordinates to your exact location, I found it more shocking than the idea that Paula Abdul's stunt double has been using performance enhancers. Of course, there was the alternative theory floated by Abuck that you were too technologically challenged to figure out how to use the image function, but adherence to that idea would have forced me to give Abuck a scintilla of credibility.
  14. HOLY CRAP!!!... ....Goony actually posted a pic in his sig?!?
  15. No, its not. Reports are that his lawyer has worked out a settlement package.
  16. I have never understood why some people thought Alford would not want to coach at IU. Despite the over publicized "feud" a couple years back, Alford still has great respect for Knight. But, I think that only goes so far. Say what you will about Alford, but he is Indiana basketball personified. I think he would relish the opportunity to coach IU. I'm sorry that things aren't rosey in Iowas, but the man can coach. He had success at SW Missouri State and Manchester College. Perhaps his name will have a little more capital as a recruiter in Indiana than it does in Iowa.
  17. What are these things I keep hearing about some interview of Bob Knight by Dana Jacobsen? Did she ask him if he would consider returning to IU and Knight got pissed? I haven't seen or heard anything of this interview aside from bits and pieces here and there.
  18. On ESPN, Andy Katz just said that if IU made it clear that Alford was the man, that Alford would go to IU. This info came to Katz through a "close friend" of Alford's.
  19. Katz elaborated in his blog to the same extent, that it's very unlikely that Few leaves Gonzaga, and Calipari too with Memphis(although that was in reference to the Mizzou job, so who knows with a more prestigious job) I'm sure it would be difficult to pry him away, but it doesn't mean IU doesn't sniff around. Few would be crazy not to at least listen to people about jumping to a program as storied as IU. I'm sure John Stockton will do everything in his power to keep Few at Gonzaga.
  20. Wow -- seems strange that only Seth Davis is reporting this. Just checked some other sites and no one else has picked up the story. If Davis is really resigning, who do the Hoosiers target for head coach? Steve Alford and Randy Wittman will be immediate candidates. Dan Dakich was the heir apparent for a long time and still would likely get a long look. Jim Crews at Army is another "in house" guy, with Keith Smart being an in house dark horse. I'd like to see IU expand and talk to Few of the 'Zags. And, I have one source close to a trustee that says Larry Brown may have interest and that the trustees definitely would. I don't think there is anything of substance to it, but that information was related to me before this story broke.
  21. Mike Davis pretty much communicated his fate on Dan Patrick's show today. What a terrible team.
  22. I would guess that the Rangers would be willing to throw a bank at him, thus skewing his value to a degree. Despite his arm problems, Kerry has maintained wicked stuff. That is why he is so difficult to just cut loose, IMO. I think Kerry could still dictate a 4/40m or 5/$50M contract from a couple of potential suitors. (And, that is still likely low.)
  23. Amen to that brother!
  24. Players continue to regress under Davis. Vaden ought to be a superstar in the Big 10. Ratliff looked better as a snot nosed freshman. Additionally, terrible offense, not only in execution, but in design. At this rate, Davis had better go deep in the NCAA or win the Big 10 Tourney. What a lousy team.
