  1. The Cubs can do both, they can have the highest payroll and be able to spend what it takes to develop a good farm system. Look at the Dodgers, they've been better than the Cubs, have a high payroll, and still able to produce a productive farm w/out high picks. It's not an either/or type of situation, in the case of the Cubs it has been more of a case of neglect and moves/picks that didn't work out. The neglect comes from diminishing Latin America (until recently it appears) and nothing in the Pacific Rim (scouting professional Japanese Baseball is diff. than amateur scouting, IMO). You beat me to it. I don't see how buying players now, means we can't continue to develop our farm system. If nothing else it will prevent us from having to call up slightly above avg. prospects with great tools hoping to hit the lottery. This team doesn't seem to do a very good job in setting up prospects to succeed on the major league level.
  2. Schimdt and Westbrook would put the rotation over the top. 2 front line Aces, a solid starter who will give you 200 innings, a 2nd year starter who could post a sub 3.50 era and win 12+ games, then Mark Prior. I would be flat out amazed if Hendry had the Cubs starting 2007 with that.
  3. uh somewhere in this thread theres a point i made where 122 games of JD Drew is a heck of a lot better than 162 games of Soriano in CF. Unfortunately, you failed to provide any facts to support your argument. Last year 162 games of Soriano was >>> than J.D. Drew. I think we need to stop assuming that age automatically equals decline in production. Soriano is only 30 years old. It is possible that he can continue his better numbers over the next few years. Hahahaha...that's a completely ridiculous claim if you've read the whole thread. KC has provided a ton of facts to back up his case. There's still room to disagree with his case and provide facts to counter it, but he has provided a lot of factual information to back his opinion. To claim otherwise is to disrespect the work he has done here and lower your own credibility. Sorry, I'm trying to keep up with the whole thread. Look no further than last year when they both played the whole season and I would take Soriano's numbers over Drew's any day of the week. Screw the arguement, I will take them both and never compare them to each other again.
  4. I seriously doubt that. But it's still worth the risk IMO. If he gets on the juice around 36-37 then he will just be getting ready to peak :-).
  5. I don't think the contract will live its full length, but way to early to tell. I do think the Cubs were trying to send a message as an organization. Cowboys looked solid, and Romo is great. Hopefully we will see a Bears-Cowboys matchup for the NFC Championship in January. Unfortuanatly that will be in Chicago should it happen.
  6. Nope, but with the Cubs signing Soriano that pretty much locks up Lee in Houston with the Cubs as his other choice.
  7. Agreed, and I would make a small bet it will happen within the next 48 hours.
  8. izturis, marshall and ohman. pleeeeeeeeeeeeease keep wuertz. Ohman has alot of value also. Left handed batter's only hit .158 against Ohman last year. Alot of playoff teams wanted Ohman because of his ability to get out left handed batter's. Can we just give them both Cedeno and Izturis
  9. This quote looks like it is coming straight from Piniella's mouth in your avatar :D
  10. For $10m per? Insane. now THIS is a ridiculous contract Starting to really wonder whats going on with the market right now. Soriano must be smiling if this is true.
  11. The Board of Directors had to get together and agree to it. $42 Million should take about 10 minutes to agree to. Just because we are in a hurry to know doesn't mean they are in a hurry to announce. A couple of days makes no difference to them. I have no idea what the media in Japan is like around this, but I am guessing it is pretty big. Might as well milk the spotlight from their perspective.
  12. Texas chances are going up a lot tonight, as are several other teams :-)
  13. Why no love for the kicker  That was great watching the fans charge the field, then all turn around and run back before the penalty.
  14. In Premium or Regular? Regular, since there will be more pages making it harder to guess :-)
  15. Anyone want to guess how many pages this thread will grow before we hear an answer?
  16. And then this to sum it up. I think this is a legit concern. The 500 innings more than Wood, doesn't say too much given his workload the past 3 seasons, but the amount of abuse Wood took before even being drafted might be similar. No FA pitcher is a lock, and Matsuzaka is a bigger investment than any other pitcher if you include the posting fee. Winning him will be great, but losing him will not be the end of the world unless the Cards somehow got him :-)
  17. It would be great if this came public before the posting period ends and those teams bids were retracted. Of course unless its the Cubs :-). I would guess the Mets and Yankees are involved.
  18. Nope, he's a FA after '07 Wells is a nice player, but I don't like him for our circumstances. Why are we trying to upgrade CF with Pie in the wings? Anyone? We need a platoon partner for Jones. That should have been done last year. I have no clue if Dusty nixed that idea, or if the organization is just blind to how hopeless he is against RHP. We need starting pitching in the worst way. We need a MIF. We need a bench full of non scrubs. Yes, Freddie Bynum, that means you. Why trade away prospects for a non pressing need when our farm system isn't that deep to begin with? I hope this rumor is bogus. You know they fly fast and furious this time of the year and up through ST anyway. Why can't we have two CF? Why can't Pie play RF? Pie probably should not even play in Chicago this next season anyways.
  19. Will Clark's 89 playoff run was almost enough to warrent HOF induction IMO. Of course if it happened against another team I would not give a damn.
  20. aaaaaaaaaahh.....Hershal Walker..the one name that can absolutely kill any Viking fan's arguement....lol I'm a Vikings fan, that's why I brought it up. lol...my appologies (on being a fan) :P As a Cowboys fan, Thank You =D>
  21. I've been at work all day otherwise it would have been sooner :-)
  22. Winner likely gets the opportunity to get killed by Texas in the Big XII title game? Nebraska had Texas all but beat last week. Mizzou went to Tech and handled them on their homecoming while Texas needed a big comeback to beat them in a rivalry game. On the other hand, Texas did handle OU while Mizzou lost to them at home. Add in the fact that the game is being played in KC, I don't think that either team will get humiliated if they play Texas(who could lose the South if aTm wins their rivalry game). It's not going to be nearly as bad as last year's Big XII title game but I still think Texas will win easily. It won't be as good either simply because I am not going to be at this years either. I have never been a college blowout like than one before, and I enjoyed every minute of last years :-)
  23. Arkansas beat Auburn, and very easily as well. Both have only 1 loss, and both play in the same division in the same conference. One is #12 and one is #6. I think we tend to look at these and think of them as one poll when they are a collection of many people. For a lot of people it takes two+ weeks to reaffirm what they believe to be true, and don't vote that way until so.
  24. When are we going to find out anything on the Postings? If FA period begins without us knowing anything that is going to impact how agressive we go after a guy like Schmidt. We can't sit around and wait have Schmidt get signed in the process.
  25. Don't forget about Holland #-o
