  1. They misspelled "Sammy Sosa."
  2. It was a loss of money. IF he gets healthy and productive, I think today's decision is going to be regrettable.
  3. Sure, it's frustrating that Prior was injured for the past few years - and he was injured. It sucks, it's ironic, and it is not Prior's fault. I have no problem saying I am PISSED about this move by the Cubs management - but I am going to stop and realize that I have absolutely zero knowledge about the true relationship between Mark Prior and the Chicago Cubs front office. Prior was one of baseball's best young pitchers, and he was a Cub. In my opinion, his 2003 performance was the best season that a Cub pitcher has had, or that I have seen for that matter. This is a big loss....
  4. I think Rowand for $12mil/year is a good sign for SF.
  5. Vance, or whoever is going to the convention - USSoccer, CubinNY, and Jersey Cub fan wanted to know if you will get them Theriot's autograph.
  6. I don't really understand the notion that the Cubs acquiring Khalil Greene is paramount to getting Brian Roberts because "we need a SS more than a 2B." Roberts would change the face of our offense. Either acquisition would be great. Despite Greene's low OB% - he does bring things to the table that would definately make the Cubs a better team (great defense, run production) and he would be a great improvement. Despite all the options we have at 2B, adding Roberts would be bigger than adding Greene, IMO. Roberts would give us a great leadoff hitter, and force (I would think) Soriano into the heart of the order.
  7. I'm not positive, but didn't Prior get a raise before the 2007 season (which he didn't even pitch in?).
  8. I think that rightfully, the Cubs wouldn't even consider trading Hill unless it were for a cheaper, better LHSP. Good luck finding that deal. If the Yankees would eat some salary, trade Prior + for Matsui. Sign Fook and put Soriano back at 2B. R 2B Soriano L RF Fukudome R 1B Lee R 3B Ramirez L LF Matsui R SS DeRosa R CA Soto L CF Pie Play guys out of defensive position and put the defense/offense thing to the test.
  9. I don't really disagree with you, but what are you trying to convince me of? That Cedeno has more potential? Check, I'm with you. That Theriot isn't a great SS? With you. That Cedeno should be starting so that he can learn fundamentals? Disagree. Theriot will due until Ronny is ready, or someone better is acquired.
  10. I really didn't think you were, but my "defense" of Theriot isn't because I know him or because he's from Louisiana or anything like that. He was absolutely brutal in September and June - and one of the reason I personally liked his play in 2007 was simply because here is a guy who wasn't really that good and didn't have a lot to offer - but he played his ass off to try and stay in the lineup. Mostly a lineup that just the year before played so terrible, and was full of guys who were playing under a questionable manager who didn't care how they performed, they were going to "come around" because they had "been there." The reasons a lot of people like Ryan Theriot is not because of his superior statistics, it is because he plays the game right (I know that is the laughable cliche'). You know damned well what I am talking about with the 2006 crap we had to pay to watch - Dusty Baker giving playing time to Perez, Mabry, Fast Freddy, etc. because he was respekin his vets. He really wasn't bad all of 2007, and I know Cedeno is going to be a good player. I really do hope he gets it all together and starts showing some of that potential. Yikes.
  11. What's idiotic is not being able to comprehend that the reason people keep using Cedeno's 2006 and Theriot's 2007 stats is because those are the ONLY FULL SEASONS THAT EITHER PLAYER HAS TO COMPARE. It's really not that hard to understand or comprehend. We are not talking about the potential of the two players, we are talking about their production. Who's stats are the top lines? Not Cedeno's. So the animosity is because you think I'm racist or something? I'm not even the ethnicity you are implying!
  12. This is a logical fallacy. The 2007 Cubs didn't win because of Ryan Theriot. The numbers show that they won in spite of him. He just happened to be the SS on that team. That's not a good enough reason to support continued poor play from his position. If you are playing a SIM game, sure it is. Baseball is a team game - Theriot was the starting SS. He helped them win. The Cubs will be a better team with a better SS. Cedeno was not that better SS in 2007. Maybe he will be in 2008. Never have I said that I wanted the Cubs to stick with Theriot and not improve at SS. I have argued that Theriot was the best SS the Cubs had in 2007. Until proven otherwise, he is still the best the Cubs have.
  13. What? Well I had a 1.250 OPS in the MSBL last year too, does that make me a better SS than Cedeno? I am glad that Cedeno had success after getting THREE hits his first month of the season in MLB. You have NO way of proving that, especially if you consider the statistics Cedeno put up in 2006 - a year that he did play every day. Those numbers do not even come close to what Theriot did in 2007. CEDENO 2006 - 151 534 51 131 18 7 6 41 8 8 17 109 .245 .271 .339 THERIOT 2007 - 148 537 80 143 30 2 3 45 28 4 49 50 .266 .326 .346 I don't have to use any facts but the statistics.
  14. Before the season starts, there is this thing called Spring Training. There are also several leagues in the offseason - which I believe that Cedeno is taking advantage of. Then he should have the job already. When he becomes a decent baserunner, fielder, and hitter - I'm sure he will. Until then, there are a lot of people who agree that learning how to play baseball is best if done before you are a Major Leaguer.
  15. Before the season starts, there is this thing called Spring Training. There are also several leagues in the offseason - which I believe that Cedeno is taking advantage of. I am not hosing Cedeno as a prospect, I have hope for him and he is young enough to still polish his skills. I hope he outplays Theriot, because Cedeno has the ability to be a great SS. I think the baserunning mistakes, but mostly his approach at the plate indicate that he needs to take a different approach. Man, I just disagree with you, that's all. It isn't that I am not using critical thinking skills - it's that we have differences in opinions. Theriot is far from a great player, but at this point he is the better SS. Consider their difference in age, consider whatever - just RIGHT NOW (or in 2007) the Cubs were a better team with Ryan Theriot playing SS. He made the plays at SS that he was supposed to make and did a good enough job to help the Cubs win the NL Central. I know that the Cubs can get better at SS, and maybe they will be better in 2008 with Cedeno there - but my arguement all along has been that in 2007, Theriot was better than Ronny Cedeno. Until proven otherwise, that will be the same in 2008 - but Ronny will get his opportunities.
  16. He shouldn't make bone-headed baserunning mistakes, or have a clue at the plate so that Lou isn't forced to play Theriot. He needs to mature as a player, in other words. Got that?
  17. I don't understand why Lou doesn't give DeRosa some playing time at SS. Give him some work there in S.T. - I'm sure he'd at least be average. How bad was Soriano at 2B? I see he turned a lot of DPs, and it looks like he made a lot of plays, indicating decent range. Was it erratic throwing or a skillet for a glove?
  18. Wow? I didn't ignore the age of the players, because the age of Cedeno and Theriot is insignificant - unless the Cubs are banking on either one of the two guys to being the SS of their future. So, why should the Cubs suffer through having Cedeno learn "on the job?" Sure he has plenty of talent, but mentally he is not a mature player - as you can tell if you note his baserunning miscues, his mental errors defensively, and his mindless approach at the plate. I'd love for Cedeno to pull it all together and take the SS job, but until that happens Theriot is best option on the Cubs roster. It's not a "man crush" or hate for Cedeno.
  19. Maybe you could cut a slice of that hypocrisy pie for Ryan Theriot - since he had such a miserable first season?
  20. i'm convinced he built the homes of at least a dozen people on nsbb. also, is it really so outlandish to think theriot's not worth $10 million? I don't think that's outlandish. He's not worth $10 million a year. He's not worth that much over 3-4 years, but he isn't even close to being as bad as what some of you guys make him out to be. Outside of a couple unproductive months, Theriot was very good for this team and far from a hinderance.
  21. I am convinced that Theriot has robbed the homes of at least a dozen people on NSBB.com.
  22. I never really understood why Soriano wasn't a RF project last year instead of a CF project. FWIW, Murton had a fine first season, and was pretty decent defensively in LF. You are right, Soriano does have the arm for RF even though he doesn't throw like an OFer - so some of those sidearm quick throws of his that work in LF would be balls bouncing out of line with his target with the longer throws from RF. And those damned "hops" before he catches the ball are one day going to cost the Cubs a big run or two.
