  1. Jake Peavy would be incredibly popular in the Cubs clubhouse.
  2. When Melky Cabrera's name comes up in trade talks, I can't help but think about Ricky Ledee. Remember when their was talk of Sosa leaving Chicago for the Yankees, and there was going to be a deal involving Ledee? Supposedly he was a can't miss prospect/young player - much like Cabrera. The Yankees are good at spinning those young OFers.
  3. Have you ever said anything, and then regretted it? To clarify, IF getting Matsui has any positive influence on whether or not the Cubs can persuade Fukudome to join the team - the team would be better with Matsui. Simply because I think Fukudome is exactly what the Cubs need in the #2 spot in the lineup. But I also think that Soriano belongs in the middle of the lineup, and I think Ryan Theriot is a good player.
  4. Holy Cow, I agree with you totally. If the Cubs could make a deal with the Twins for Santana AND hang on to Hill, that would be a SCARY rotation. Left-handed heavy, but SCARY. Hell, give them Marquis and eat a good portion of his salary, and Patterson, Murton, and whatever. I'd like to keep Murton for his capabilities against LHP, and Pie because of his glove and potential - but they are all expendable when we are talking about Johan Santana. BTW, Santana may have lost 13 games last year, but ALL of his other numbers seem to be mostly in line with the previous 4 years of dominance. I am not buying the theory that he is "slipping." Plus, he is just entering his prime.
  5. I think that DeRosa's worth is in his versatility and ability to hit no matter where he is playing. He was our best 2B last year, but you can pretty much count on him to be in the lineup everyday no matter where he is playing on the field. If the Cubs signed Matsui, I have a feeling it is related to the chances of getting Fukudome. Even if they didn't get Fukudome, they are better with Matsui at 2B and DeRosa playing - just at different positions. In my opinion, of course. We'll see how it plays out.
  6. Well, the way I see it is you make trades to get better....depending on your situation. The Twins, it seems, will be losing one of the best pitchers in baseball. If they hang on to him and can't get an extension, they lose a lot. If they deal him and get a bunch of quality players that they have financial control over for low salaries - they win. That's why they are going to pick the best deal out there. That proposal that doesn't include Rich Hill does not compete with what other teams are offering for him. At the same time, I think Hill and a couple other quality young ballplayers are as good or better than what the Yanks and Red Sox are offering - with the added bonus of the Twins not having to face him except possibly in Interleague play. If the Cubs traded Hill, Prior, and if need be Pie or Patterson - and get Santana WITH an extension for even $18 mil a year - they are a much better team. Both teams win.
  7. I would think that the Twins would want as good a pitcher as they could get, and Hill would most likely be the centerpiece of the deal. I don't think Marshall or Gallagher have the appeal that Rich Hill does. I would not trade Hill unless in was for a better pitcher.
  8. The D-Rays could really benefit from a few good pitchers. Prior, Marshall, and Pie for Crawford. They have a GREAT 3B prospect in Evan Longoria, so they could get over that hump with a trade or two.
  9. Agree with that. When you think about the importance of having a LH hitter or a guy who can hit LHP - it's really potential-vs-production. I think what Lou is obviously saying is that he wants both, a lefty bat in the middle of the order who can hit LHP. If you look at the numbers, though - Matt Murton is a RH hitter who can hit LHP, and I think he would be a good option for RF if the Cubs can land a big hitting CF (hope Fukudome can play CF in Wrigley). I hear Fukudome CAN play CF, but does anyone know if that would happen if the Cubs can acquire him?
  10. If you think about it, that offer probably wouldn't fly for a couple reasons - mainly because none of the players the Twins would receive are really players they can count on. Prior has not been healthy since 2003, and hasn't shown that he is close to pitching at a dependable level throughout a complete season. Marshall was dropped from the Cubs rotation, even though he was fairly dependable most of the season. Pie has great tools and plenty of potential, but his professional statistics show he doesn't really handle LHP, even though he would be an excellent defender in CF. Cedeno has better potential after a great season in AAA, but has shown little plate discipline at the ML level. In their favor, both Pie and Cedeno are very young and have good experience for their age. Agree - I expect better seasons from Lee and Soriano in 2008.
  11. I have a hard time believing the Twins would not be interested in Pie, Hill, and Prior for Santana. Like mentioned earlier - only do it if the Cubs can work out an extension with Santana. Whether the Cubs "need" offense more than Santana - that is kinda ridiculous. Derrek Lee underachieved in 2007, and I expect an offense cored around Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Soto, DeRosa, and hopefully Fukudome (barring injuries) is going to be better in 2008 than 2007. Coupled with a rotation of Santana, Zambrano, and Lilly - the Cubs would be MUCH stronger.
  12. If the Cubs could work out a deal for Santana, I'd think they could part with Hill. Even if they threw in Pie, and any other prospect I can think of - it would be worth it. With Santana in the rotation, an outfield with Soriano, Fukudome, and Murton would be absolutely fine. A rotation of Santana, Zambrano, Lilly, Dempster, and whoever would be tough.
  13. It was nice of Lou to give Kendall a "courtesy start" in the post season this year. Soto should have NEVER come out....
  14. If it has anything to do with getting Fukudome, or betters the chances of getting Fukudome - Kaz Matsui is not going to hurt this team.
  15. Like I said, for $10 million a year or less (which isn't going to happen), he would be a good addition. I wouldn't really gauge his production on 2006, since he spent a lot of time on the DL - but I would look at his numbers from 2007 since he played all but one game. Rowand was 29 last year and is an improving player. He hits in the clutch and plays great defense. He isn't great at drawing walks, but his 47 last year and .374 OB% make me wonder if those totals were a fluke or an improved approach at the plate. Only time will tell. He would not be a bad addition assuming the Cubs can't land Fukudome or pull off a trade that doesn't leave the bullpen or rotation weaker.
  16. Though he'd probably kill himself in Wrigley Field, I'd love to have him for $10 million a year or less. Not going to happen though. If it did, he'd stay in CF and Pie/Murton would platoon in RF. Prolly would still need another bat though, but he'd definately make the team better.
  17. Why would you have Crawford, and not Fukudome, hitting 2nd? Because of his speed? Fukudome has #2 in the order written all over him: high OB%, good speed, and he hits tons of doubles.
  18. Soriano was a little clutch in the All Star Game, and with the Yankees in the playoffs - I remember a pretty clutch bomb. Then again, we lost in three....
  19. Well, if the word is true that he is rocking a pony-tail, it is probably at LEAST Terry Silver money.
  20. It can't hurt that Soriano can speak a little Japanese.
  21. Todd Walker was definately good enough to be a starter. He wasn't a good 2nd baseman, but I think he was a bit better than how bad everyone said he was. I think the reason he didn't "catch" on anywhere might be the same reason he couldn't stick anywhere. I could be wrong, and often am.
  22. I've seen him around town a few times since he was released. Still scruffy. My favorite memory of him was in HS - one of my teammates had him 0-2 with two curveballs. Made him looke stupid on the first 2 swings. Coach called for a fastball and he hit the gym off one bounce. Prolly hit that ball 450 feet. Good call, coach. Todd also led the state in goals in soccer. Hell of an athlete. NameDropAbe out....
  23. Can I get some props for breaking the Bob Melvin NL Manager of the Year story? Do I get a t-shirt or a trophy?
