  1. I'm sure soapy has watched a game. Why would soapy be posting here otherwise? You're right, no contender has ever played a rookie. Heck, the WS runner-up last season played a rookie CF. So adding a better second baseman will make the team worse? He counted him as a 5th starter. If that doesn't suit you, notice how he listed 4 potential starters for 2 spots? You could plug in one of the other two. Schmidt is likely to get a smaller deal than someone like Zito because of his age. Schmidt also doesn't give up as many flyballs as Zito - more of which will likely be HRs when half of his games are played at Wrigley as opposed to Oakland. There certainly is a risk in signing Schmidt. The Cubs work on a limited budget and obviously cannot fill all their many holes with just FA signings. Sometimes one must trade from a strength to improve a weakness. Trading away one reliever shouldn't really make a strength into a weakness - and if it does - then the bullpen is not ready for injuries. People do make spelling mistakes. I should of looked over it before I posted it. Who is the 2B man? Loretta? Thats all he is adding to his lineup. Are you kidding me? That will improve your lineup, but that is not the kind of guy who will get you over the top. Astros went to the World Series because of their pitching. That rotation is not good enough to win a world series. You could deal Prior if he is packaged with someother people, for a proven starter. Lackey? Angels might be willing to deal him, considering he is not becoming their ace like they expected him to. Adding a couple of FA pitchers will improve this team. Trading Barrett for Vernon Wells would be a smart idea. Then sign Bengie Molina.
  2. If that is the 07 Cubs, then we have NO chance in hell. Im going to vomit if I look at that again. I have to disagree. I think TT's team is certainly capable of making a run in a weak NL. It's a significant upgrade offensively IF Jones is put into a proper platoon and they add a decent hitting 2B to the top of the order. Loretta? Offensively, that team sucks. Pitching wins games people. Just by looking at that rotation, I know for a fact they will not compete. hahahahaha...You know for a FACT?!?!?! Awesome. Thanks. Have you ever watch a game of baseball? Counting on a Cf with No major league experience is crazy. Adding a 2b will not improve this team. Counting on Prior is also just crazy. Adding a 34 yr old SP in Schmidt will be a dumb idea. Trading either Howry or Eyre, just dosent make sense. The bullpen looks to be a strength next year. Why turn a strength into a weakness?????????????????????

  4. Do you really think the bullpen is fine? We have lost a lot of games thanks to the pen this year. Howry has not been as good as advertised. Howry has been fine. Of course there's not much telling if it'll stay that way(like any other reliever), but he hasn't been bad. As for the topic of the thread, the easiest thing to do is play Pie, keep Murton, trade Cedeno/Theriot, get Jones a platoon partner and get a 2B to hit at the top of the order. It's not great by any means, but it's feasible 2B/Murton Murton/2B Lee Ramirez Jones/Barrett Barrett/Platoon Pie Izturis Add a good starter, Schmidt is my favorite. Z Acquisition Marshall/Marmol/Hill/Guzman Marshall/Marmol/Hill/Guzman Prior Keep the pen, although if you can trade Eyre or especially Howry for something worthwhile, do it. Wuertz closes. If that is the 07 Cubs, then we have NO chance in hell. Im going to vomit if I look at that again.
  5. Where would Nomar play? Dont even say SS. Only position I feel he could stay healthy is at 1b. Cubs already have D-Lee. Dont say the outfield either. Specially considering he has a history of leg injuries.
  6. I hate the Samardzija signing. I think he is guranteed 9 million. That might be the highest amount of guranteed money ever given to a college baseball player.
  7. Delmon Young just hit his first career HR off sweaty Freddy.
  8. Why would you want any of them?
  9. Totally agree.
  10. The Cubs would be stupid to deal Izturis. I guess people love a player who makes mental mistakes every time he steps on the field. I guess that makes sense. :? That player is Cedeno btw.
  11. Bay is a franchise type player. I think it will take more than Pie and pitching prospects.
  12. Worked well there, I thought. Talking to a couple of guys who are around Gm's everyday, they tell me that to be successful, you have to take risk's. Risk's as in signing players like Dempster, Miller, Carpenter, etc. Guys who are coming off arm injuries, are a risk. I dont know what is so hard to understand. A good example of this, is Kerry Wood. Some GM is going to take a RISK on him. No gurantee he will stay healthy, but there is always that chance he will stay healthy. That is considered a risk.
  13. The fact that he is leading the league in hits since June 24th means he has made the adjustments that were needed to be made. He is getting on base more, and is making things happen at the top of the order.
  14. His defense is not that bad. Unless, your talking about his arm? Again, 0 errors in CF this year.
  15. Why isnt Theriot starting?? This makes no sense. :x
  16. Last time I checked, you win with offense too. Pitching and defense, is more important than offense. If you dont have a solid pitching staff supported with a solid defense, your not going to win many baseball games. Yet, you advocate the Cubs retaining Juan Pierre who hurts the Cubs from a defensive standpoint because of his weak arm. Pierre has 0 errors so far for the Cubs this year. For the 100th time, all Pierre needs to do is throw the ball to the cut-off man. Didnt Pierre win a world series with his bad arm in CF for the Marlins? No, Pierre was part of a team that won the World Series. His bad arm really didn't help much. The point is, you can win a world series with Pierre in CF.

Yet, you advocate the Cubs retaining Juan Pierre who hurts the Cubs from a defensive standpoint because of his weak arm. I don't know if you've noticed, but he advocates pretty much every baseball stereotype. In this case, he advocates retaining Pierre because he is fast, leadoff-type player and a "gamer" Since June 24th, Pierre has had the most hits in the majors with 80. Didnt D-Lee get off to a slow start with the Cubs in 04? He seems to have adjusted pretty well. Same can be said for Pierre.

  19. Alfredo Amezaga, is a very versitle bench player. He is like the Pablo Ozuna of the Marlins. He is one of those players, that has alot of value on a playoff team.
  20. Thats a very Hendry-like philosopny. The most successful GM's, are the ones who take the most risk's.

  22. I dont know why some people miss Walker. The guy hurts your team on defense. Only thing he is good for, is a bat off the bench. Last time I checked, you win with pitching and defense.
