  1. We might could use a long man today. With Marshall and Hill not used to pitching a ton of innings, and Marquis a first half pitcher, this is a decent option if one of those guys blows up completely.
  2. Just like the Kendall hit & run last week -- if it works, it was the right move. If not, the manager is a reprehensible moron.
  3. Naturally, I can't find the quote anywhere, but I definitely recall reading that Soriano prefers leading off because he sees more fastballs there.
  4. Just brainstorming here -- what if Zambrano were to beat the crap out of Jason Kendall? It's something to try.
  5. Yeah, but with the way the umpiring went this whole series it's pretty understandable. I'd put more blame on the offense not making a little more hay earlier in the game, especially against Petit.
  6. The total condescension in your post aside, yes, I do believe just about everyone who posted in this thread knows the difference. And if you take into account the game situation, you'd better be in a straight steal mode. I don't know about total condescension; if you want that you need to go to a game thread. There's no way it was a straight steal. Kendall is a good hit and run type; chances were excellent he'd make contact. But he didn't, so Piniella is an idiot and every internet baseball genius gets to feel superior. Hilarious.
  7. Do you guys really not know the difference between a straight steal and sending the runners to avoid the dp?
  8. Sad, sad post. Yes, yours is. In all seriousness though, that was a horrible call. You don't try and steal third base when you're down a run in the 9th inning. Ever. It was only "horrible" because it didn't work. If he doesn't send them and Kendall GIDPs all you second guessers would be ripping him for that too. Jesus.
  9. I don't think Lee's batting helmet is shiny enough, he sucks
  10. No, he is replacing Murton. Soriano and Pagan will be back and Murton won't be on the final 25, for the playoff roster. Taking bets now. They needed Murton at the very least to be a good platoon partner. He wasn't because he needs to play every day to be productive at all. He had his big chance to play every day when Floyd and Soriano were both gone. I was hoping he'd jump on the opportunity a la Theriot but he didn't; he was just okay. Can we stop pretending he never gets a chance? Maybe he's just not that good. If Monroe can hit lefties without needing to play a lot he'll be way more useful than Murton has been. My concern is that he's used to playing a lot and may have a problem with such a limited role; it's definitely worth a shot though. Bottom line is playing time is available if anyone can hit with some freakin power.
  11. I sincerely believe they have all the ingredients right now for a dynasty. They just need to gel a teensy bit more.
  12. Agreed. Michael Barrett is exhibit A.
  13. No. You already had jinxed it. Pretty sure something one person says over the internet is relayed to Zambrano via the bat signal making him give up a hit. :) Thank you. I always wondered why no one seemed to know that not talking about it only really applies to the people actually in the dugout.
  14. THANK YOU We've been in severe need of an overachieving Freel type for years. I don't care if he's purple with pink polka dots.
  15. I gave jones plenty of chances, and at this point he's the best option that the cubs have in CF. But that's saying more about the condition of their CF situation than about jock. He was fine at 2006 production, but this year he's been lousy. He's always been a slow starter who needs to play every day to be effective. We knew this but couldn't afford to play him every day early on when there were other options. He was simply a victim of Lou's equal opportunity system. In CF, he really isn't bad at all. Although, yeah, his lefty splits look like a total fluke right now.
  16. Say, has anyone noticed that with his 4-for-5 today --all against lefties-- he's actually now been better against lefties than righties this year? .300 .375 .420 vs lhp .272 .329 .397 vs rhp Trade Pie now!!! (I swear I'm joking). But Jones looks like a pretty good stopgap after all.
  17. Umm. Let's. They're down by a lot with not a lot of games left in the season. They're very bad baseball teams. They're chasing 3 teams. While this is true, I just wanted to increase our depression by emphasizing that one of the two swept us and the other team is a game away from sweeping us. And Bobby Livingston is **shudder** scrappy
  18. If they hadn't gotten Soriano, they woulda brought back Pierre. End of discussion.
  19. They're pressing with Soriano out. We didn't really think they weren't going to struggle at all, did we? They're going to peak at just the right time; this is the year baby
  20. Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Floyd... Guys that have had good power in their career all with power outages. It's not a coincidence. All signs point to Gerald Perry. Yeah, but the offense has also been more consistent as opposed to the feast or famine we usually get.
  21. I would have called around to see if there were any reasonably priced upgrades available, but kept the possibility open that no one affordable would be substantially better than what we already have. Oh, yeah, that's what they're doing. I do think it's almost Murton's turn.
  22. As someone who lives near Cincy and watches the Reds almost as much as the Cubs, I can tell you this is true. The numbers may say he's a great hitter, but your eyes tell you he's a bum. I'd love to see the Cubs get him just to watch how the Dunn lovers around here cope with their inner conflict.
  23. Anyone remember the lineup the Yankees took into the playoffs last year? Fat lotta good that did 'em. Pitching pitching pitching
  24. This is exactly what I was thinking last season, as I had noted his dismal Septembers around the ASB. I wondered if it would be different this time since the Reds were technically in contention. He responded with his worst numbers yet, I'm afraid. Though he did draw 20 walks in September and no one else on the team was hitting. It's possible he simply wasn't getting anything to hit but still pressed to try to make something happen. I'd love to see what he'd do in a Cubs lineup as more of a complementary player, but if it doesn't happen it may be just as well.
  25. But when Jr. gets hurt could you live with Soriano-Jones-Pagan? Seriously, his issues have been burning the Reds for years.
