  1. I like DeRosa but does anyone else wish they'd shown more interest in Iwamura for 2b last year? He has everything they like about Matsui (lefty, Japanese, good speed) with the added bonus that he doesn't suck ass.
  2. This is all true, but you're talking about a team with a manager who needs as many guys as possible in well-defined roles, because he's horrible at assigning them himself.
  3. You must be thinking of all their other ones
  4. It's hard to defend a team dumb enough to hire Dusty Baker as manager (hint hint) but I think what Reds fans are happy about is that they finally decided to throw money at one guy who's actually a good player, rather than a few million here or there at the Stantons and Cormiers of the world. Say what you want about the contract, but this will make them a better team right away -- much like the Soriano contract did for the Cubs last year. Was there a better way for them to get the pitching they need? Maybe, but I think it's interesting that Krivsky's big attempt to fix the bullpen through trade (Kearns/ Lopez) was met with similar know-it-all snottiness. Maybe, just maybe, other GMs simply won't make the trades the messageboard geniuses think they will, so in reality a guy with a mandate to win now and a track record for scoring good players for next to nothing sometimes has to hand out a bad contract. At least they're only stuck with Cordero for half the time the Cubs will be stuck with Soriano.
  5. Actually, I've been thinking Ryan Freel would be a great platoon partner/ backup plan for CF.
  6. Hmmmm....
  7. Last word on rotoworld was that he probably wouldn't be back by ST...and its not a torn MCL and a torn meniscus. And he had elbow surgery to remove loose bodies. Personally, I love to have loose bodies floating around me. My original post was to get Hamilton or Scott (let me add Church) to complement Murton and/or Pie and then add Bradley. Bradley being available later might work to our advantage. The Cubs could see if Pie is able to hit at the major league level and, if not, pick up Bradley for less money (half a season). If he really struggles in the first half, a player like Hamilton or Church can help out in CF. I think you might be selling Hamilton short a bit. Assuming he's healthy and clean, he's gonna be a monster. I doubt the Reds would hand him over to the Cubs without being blown away. (Think Hill +) Scott is totally available, though, and suits that role perfectly. If we don't get the eff you Japanese dude I'd prefer Scott by a large margin over Geonkins.
  8. You said "undie turd". Great post. I say this because you seem like you could really use an ego boost
  9. I think I posted in a different thread that I'm convinced it's all about opening up the closer spot as they negotiate with Wood. OK, that's bush league though. You could keep something like that behind closed doors. Why box the entire organization into an important decision like that with 5 months to go before opening day? Now if they make further changes and Demp isn't a starter, they look like liars. If they kept it "behind closed doors", how does Wood know they've done it at all? Announcing it publicly would be a way to prove to him that the larger role he wants is actually open. And as Beertown Cubbie has pointed out, could be beneficial if they're trying to move Dempster (which I also believe). Really, I can't think of any other (good) reasons why they'd announce something like this now, while they're negotiating with Wood. A whole lot can and probably will happen by spring training, and if Dempster is indeed in the rotation, he'll either be decent or he'll be back in the pen. Hopefully.
  10. I think I posted in a different thread that I'm convinced it's all about opening up the closer spot as they negotiate with Wood.
  11. I'd look at it as Randy Winn would be a better stopgap to Pie than Jones. He's not ideal in CF but neither is Jones. If and when Pie learns the strike zone, Winn is not unmoveable. Either way Jones is as good as gone, IMO, and Pie doesn't look ready yet.
  12. It does allow them to include sizable bonuses for "games finished", which is what I think teams give potential closers as bonuses. I think he may have had that in last year's contract, actually. The thing is that now that he's actually pitching, he expects the opportunity to finish games. Removing Dempster from the role had to be done right now to convince Wood he'd get that opportunity.
  13. After thinking this over, I am 100% convinced that Dempster moving to the rotation is not about Dempster, or Marquis, or Marshall. It's all about Kerry Wood. They're negotiating with him. They want him back. He wants to come back, but he wants to be assured of a larger role. Thus, they had to free up the closer role for him. Thus, the odd timing. It's all about bringing Wood back; nothing more. I bet they're shopping Dempster hard. Luke Scott, I say.
  14. Sure, why not? People definitely take things at face value WAY too much around here. Shopping Dempster is an outstanding idea, and if you can sell him as a "proven closer" AND an option for the rotation, it can only help his value. As a bonus, you get to irritate a whole lot of jumpy Cubs fans. It's a win/win.
  15. Does anyone think this means the Cubs go after Luke Scott? He's not bad.
  16. Nitpick, but Bedard would easily be at least our #2....He might be better than Zambrano. Z, Bedard Lilly Hill and a miraculous return by Prior Holy crap. Sorry, I had a vision that Prior (and Jones) would be going to Cincy in the Griffey deal. After all, he had his best year thanks to Dusty's skillful managing techniques.
  17. What #2 and #4 pitchers would anyone give up for one year of Dunn and Griffey? I believe they've been shopping those two for years and haven't come close to getting what they want. At this point my guess is Josh Hamilton is their best bet to get someone good. I have a feeling Noah Lowry is about the best they'll do.
  18. But that doesnt change the fact that Dusty has never had a player quite like Dunn. I understand he has favored guys like Simon. Still what would he do if he had a Dunn type on his team has never really been shown before. I think the worse thing that will happen is Dusty will bat him 6th or something like that. The one I think that is really going to be interesting is Scott Hattieberg (Base Clogging Vet) and Joey Votto (base clogging rookie) Don't worry; they have the free-swinging nonclogger Jorge Cantu to solve that little problem. Reds fans will tear their hair out as Votto rots on the bench.
  19. Oh god please stop; you're killing me. You guys believe in leprechauns too? THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A MARK PRIOR HE WAS A FIG NEWTON OF YOUR IMAGINATION GO BACK TO SLEEP NOW
  20. I could see Dempster for Freel happening.
  21. Seriously? You think it has anything to do with a lack of effort? If anything they were all trying too hard.
  22. Isn't there some Whitney Houston song where she goes on about "Saving The Best For Last"? Yeah, not that one.
