  1. Wait, I don't get it, they're both pitchers. Did he pound him inside or on the rubber?
  2. My theory about a potential Abreu trade revolved around this type of regime change. Philly was sick of contending but never actually competing for postseason glory. The fans have no faith in the direction of that franchise, and ownership is pissed that attendance dropped pretty sharply in the park's 2nd year. My guess is the next guy will try and shake things up, with the first order of business being getting rid of Thome. They'll end up paying some of his contract, and might have to give up some more talent in return. I still won't go as far as saying Abreu is as good as gone, but Utley and Howard are the only players the fans love. I really think Hendry has to go back to the Nomar negotiations and think of a way to become the middle man, sending a reduced cost Thome to the AL and ending up with Abreu in RF. But if the new GM loves Abreu's unheralded star label, and relatively risk free contract, and instead chooses to deal Burrell and the 3/36.5m left on his deal, then I wouldn't mind Pat the bat in LF next year.
  3. Ed Wade is gone Now the question is where will the loyalties of the next GM lie.
  4. Would you do anything with the Cubs OF or just leave it as is?
  5. I got a Houston to win NL Pennant 2005 ticket in my wallet that I got last year.
  6. That list tells me two things: 1) The Cubs have been terrible developing talent the past 15 years. 2) When they bring guys in from other organizations, it's usually toward the end of their career, which means guys retire shortly after leaving the Cubs, and don't have much to offer others teams. This organization is so pathetic. Ten years into his term and MacPhail's biggest accomplishment is making the team less bad on a consistent basis.
  7. If Guzman was still 20 I'd agree with you. As far as I can tell, Liriano has thrown 2 complete seasons in a row, and will turn 22 this month. And he's probably got a couple options left. This year was the last straw for me with Guzman and the benefit of the doubt. Liriano is younger, started a year later, and has 80 more IP than Guzman. Not what I would call a comparable situation.
  8. Personally I'm in awe that somebody can see Guzman's injury history and laugh off the idea of trying something different. I'm far more comfortable with the immense history of extremely talented pitchers who can't stay healthy than I am in believing that simply getting in shape will fix everything. Nomar was supposedly in the best shape of his life in March. Maybe it'll work out, with a ton of luck, but no way can you say it's insane to put him in the bullpen. Visual history or not, this wouldn't be the first time people wasted an arm because they refused to try something new with a guy who couldn't stay healthy.
  9. She likes her Ds
  10. So this year, put him in the pen and option him to the minors unless he's great in the spring. If you you let him start, and he does get injured, then he's worthless to you. You can't keep him on the roster after that. You have to find out this year if he's worth keeping around. So 1) Put him in the pen right away, and if he does well in the spring, he breaks camp with the team (possibly saving the option). 2) Option him to AAA and let him work on being a reliever, call him up if he stays healthy and succeeds for a while. If you start him in the rotation, odds are he gets hurt again, and you no longer have the benefit of being able to wait for him to heal, because by next year you have no option and you can't just put him in the 25 man not knowing what you have.
  11. Yeah, that's sort of the problem.
  12. So is the economist/mathmetician argument ~ speed's not useful?? That's not it at all. Attempting to steal bases is not useful unless you are incredibly good at it.
  13. Why is that a waste? Perhaps if he limited his repertoire he'd be less prone to injury, perhaps. Regardless, talented arms in the pen are extremely value. It's much more of a waste to let him reinjure himself, and you can't get any value in trade for a guy who can't stay healthy.
  14. By the way, just playing with a lineup after a series of moves like this, and the lineup is insane: Giles Giles Lee Helton Ramirez Barrett Murton Cedeno Assuming Helton at $14m (Rox have to pick up some of the deal if they trade him), Giles/Giles at 5.5/10, respectively, a crazy 3/30 deal for Wagner, a bench of Blanco/Theriot/Fontenot/Greenberg/1.1m OF, and I've got a $102.75m juggernaut. Having 2 minimum wage starter helps a lot. And with that lineup, you have to be happy to go with the kids on the bench.
  15. That would be great but can he play the OF? Would he want to? Does he have the arm to? Not everybody can play every position. Wasn't he a punter? Punters can do anything they put their mind to. He was a QB at Tennessee. At his age I really doubt he would accept something like this. I think it would help the Cubs bigtime but I really doubt he would agree to do it. I thought Dunn was the college QB. Who was the former punter? I doubt it as well, but it's worth exploring. This had to be the worst seasons in Todd's career. He's got to be itching for a ring. Unless he thinks Colorado is ready to put it together, I bet he'd accept a trade. Of course, he could always go to Boston or NY and still play 1st.
  16. I said there are instances where it's happened. I just don't think it's wise to make personel decisions based on specific circumstances that might happen in the future. It was the stolen base that mattered more than anything. And it wasn't like Rivera was great other than that at bat. He had a pretty good string of blowing it in the past few postseasons, especially against the Red Sox. Remember, Millar got on 1st in order for Roberts to even get to 2nd. That was the 2nd baserunner Rivera allowed that game. And Mueller was already hitting like .400 against Mariano going into that at bat. The romantics like to say that Roberts got in Mo's head, but that was no sure save to begin with.
  17. Understandable, my boss said the same thing.
  18. That would be great but can he play the OF? Would he want to? Does he have the arm to? Not everybody can play every position. Wasn't he a punter? Punters can do anything they put their mind to.
  19. I would beg to differ. He was injured with KC, no? He was healthy in 2001 and 2002 (not -2003 as you say). He missed a large chunk of 2003, 2004 and 2005. He's been hurt in 60% of his pro seasons. History is littered with "if he stays healthy" pitchers who amounted to nothing. A switch to the bullpen would at least give you a chance of getting something from him. The best predictor of future injury is past injury. Guzman's past injuries are numerous. The Cubs have shown no ability to keep pitcher's injury with any sort of prehab type treatment. Their bording on incompetent in that department. I would not put an ounce of faith in their ability to nurse Guzman through 2 straight healthy seasons as a starter.
  20. So does that mean this was his first year on the 40 man roster? I'm almost positive he was on the 40 man in 2003, wasn't he? I figured 2004 was his first year. He was a pro at age 18 in 2000. I thought there was some rule about 18 year olds going on the 40 man after 4 years, while college guys went on after 3. That would mean he was not on the roster in 2000, 2001, 2002 or 2003, but went on the 40 man in 2004 and 2005. Which of course would mean he burned 2 options when pitching in the minors the past 2 years. Of course, I have no idea if that's accurate. I will say, if this is his last option year, you can't risk him as a starter again. If he has 2 more, then maybe you think about it. But either way, if it's me, he goes to the pen and you hope he turns into FRod by August. From the Cubs website: Angel was added to the Cubs' major league roster in October 2003... Doesn't that mean he burned an option in 2004 and 2005?
  21. I've listened to enough former pitchers BS about their past so much not to take their theories seriously. I don't doubt that pitchers think about the runner more. And I don't doubt that people think it has an affect. What I do doubt is that there is a substantial affect on the at-bats, over time. Just like the theory that Furcal is worth more than Walker because he can score from first more often, I'm sure there are specific cases where it's helped a batter to have a speedy guy on base in front of them. But I do not know that there is a substantial affect. And neither do you, no matter who told you what.
  22. That's a popular theory, but to my knowledge no objective analysis actually backs it up. Just because you can't quantify something doesn't mean it should be disregarded. Probably a third of baseball is intangibles. Yeah, I don't prescribe to such notions.
  23. Nightmare scenario of course. But in my opinion, it's not going to happen. I think Jim made it somewhat clear that he was appreciative of what Neifi did AS A FILL-IN. I do not believe he will consider Neifi for the starter, unless they fill out the rest of the roster to productivity capacity.
  24. That's a popular theory, but to my knowledge no objective analysis actually backs it up. I think if a pitcher throws over to first he's thinking about he runner and they would do so if a Furcal type is on first. If you have ARam on first I see the pitcher giving all his time to the batter. Like I said, that's a popular theory, but to my knowledge no objective analysis actually backs it up. Simply thinking about the runner doesn't necessarily make it easier for the hitter. It's similar to the theory of "protection" for a hitter. It makes sense on paper, but it practice it hasn't really been proven to exist.
  25. So does that mean this was his first year on the 40 man roster?
