  1. I thought it was worth repeating. Besides 29 GMs can't be wrong. I think Wilson is a good player, but let's not overrate him. There is a reason why he was still available in January. Maybe it was a personally choice, maybe it professional, nonetheless, I don't think his value is as high as some may think. I don't think you understand how people on this board rate Wilson. Ideally he'd platoon with Jones. I'm not handing him the starting 1B job, or even a starting corner OF position. I think he's a fantastic match with Jones for a platoon that could produce excellent numbers.
  2. For Jeff at least. We won't know if it pays off for the Cubs for several years. That's a ton of scratch, and reportedly a NTC as well, which takes away a huge amount of any prospects value. They're able to take a 1st round projection who at the time was considered a more likely bet for FB rather than BB and select him in the 5th round and able to sign him while getting starts at SS and low-A, that's a success, IMO. Not many teams would've done the work or used the resources to find out what his intentions truly were and then to actually take that chance is something that doesn't happen that often. It's similar to when teams draft a player lower than he is slotted and while signing him higher than the slotted pick (Eric Patterson or Hellickson from TB come to mind), is able to prevent him from going to school or going back to school. In this case, it involves not only school and cont. to play BB, but obviously FB as well. Even if Patterson doesn't pan out, the inital aspect of being able to draft and more imp. sign someone with that ceiling is a success. Yes, they were successful signing him, throwing unprecedented money around helps. But we won't know if it pays off for quite a while. Just getting a guy signed is worthless if he turns into nothing and can't be traded for anything of value.
  3. Why is it odd to have a presser for this? This is really big national news with huge implications on the NFL draft. This is a chance for the Cubs to steal some more positive press. Yeah, I'd expect anytime a prospect gets an 8 digit contract it's worthy of a press conference.

  5. I'm going to Kinkos to frame this post! Glad I am not the only one who caught that. I am really excited about this. Its nice to have some unadulterated good news for once. I'd like to adulterate it by saying it's absolutely absurd that he gave him a no-trade clause.
  6. I'm not a big fan of putting such recently drafted players that high, unless they are the true super studs drafted in the top couple. At least make him put up a really good half season.
  7. Yeah, the pursuit of leadoff hitters should pretty much be done, now that Soriano has that spot for the next several years.
  8. I guess I'll officially say "good job Jim and Tim" in this thread. I never thought he'd give up on football this quickly, but I guess they had a much clearer idea of his intentions.
  9. I wouldn't. I'd rather have him at SS than Izturis, but he's got a pretty big contract, and he's nothing special. My stance is leadoff is not a position. It's a spot in the order. When you put together a lineup you need to get the best combination of 8 positions that you can get. You don't go out to sign a 2 hitter, or a 7 hitter. You shouldn't pay a premium for a leadoff hitter. Get the best 8 you can get, and put the guy who best fits at leadoff in that spot.
  10. It's been reported in recent days that you might see Samard zija, Samard zija, Samardzija, sign a baseball only contract before the Senior Bowl practices begin. Am I the only one who caught this? If this was a brady bunch reference...very funny. I will hereforth refer to him as Mardzija, Mardzija, Mardzija. Or Marsha. I didn't catch it but now I can't think of anything but Marsha and football right now! I was going for one of those Sesame Street spelling things, to sound out the word. Stu --- pid Stu - pid Stupid But I like Marsha.
  11. I'd say QB and pitcher are the two positions you can't just give up, and then go back to in a few years and expect success. I think a guy could handle the switch to WR though.
  12. I doubt that. If that were the case, then no potential 1st round pick would ever declare for the draft, they'd rather allow all 32 teams to bid for them as free agents. I think a team could draft him, and would then retain his rights for a certain period.
  13. The realization that it would never work? Perhaps some sort of time limit on the Cubs' offer? Or maybe this was the plan all along and he was just saying the right things to keep the football people happy.
  14. The defense shut down the opponents early in those 4 games, before taking big leads and playing prevent with 3rd stringers.
  15. For some reason, the team that is 5-4 in its last 9 games, 2-2 in its last 4, is considered by ESPN to be the team that is playing the best of late. I don't get it myself. I guess it has to do with the fact that they beat the then ESPN favorite, Cowboys, and the most recent ESPN favorite, Eagles. But we're talking about a team that's in the bottom half of the league in rushing yards per carry and per game. They are also at the bottom of the league in rushing yards per carry and game given up. They aren't on any sort of hot streak. The whole things seems to be based on the idea that they'll pass their way to glory against the team which has given up the fewest passing yards per attempt this year, and has allowed the 3rd worst QB rating. It's not that I can't see the Saints winning. They are good. They just aren't any reasonable person's idea of what a favorite should be. It's all hype and nonsense.
  16. Quit talking about the freaking Super Bowl!
  17. 1 year, five million, trot nixon and craig wilson... For a one year committment, and 130-some million dollars less... we could have had about the same production in RF, if not moreso. But we'd be without a leadoff hitter........... I agree but there still are no guarentees that Nixon will be healthy enough to play a whole season though. Platoon players don't play whole seasons.
  18. Could is the operative word. My lack of faith in player development makes me the pessimistic cuss I am. There are no guarantees in the MLB draft. If you get someone with his ability in the 5th round and get him to play baseball, that's a job well done. That's a job done. It wouldn't become well done until he did something in the majors, or was deemed worthy enough to be worth something in a trade for somebody who produced in the majors.

  20. Well we have traitor Packer fans in this state, and downstate I assume there are some Rams fans as well. Probably some Colts fans down there too. And there are the communists, satanists and general riff-raff that don't even like football at all.
  21. And when they get to the Super Bowl, they'll have the NFC stigma to deal with. What network has the Super Bowl this year? Pretty sure it's Fox. I wish it was NBC. cbs
  22. That's not a bad guess. Maybe it's Samardjia committing to a big baseball contract? Samard ----- zija
  23. Not much. He doesn't have much velocity, from what I've heard. Everything says he's extremely raw. It's all about the tools. He's going to be quite a project for the developmental people. I should add, yes, he probably could be really good. It'll just take a ton of work, and luck. If 99 isn't good velocity, then we agree. I thought I read he was in the very low 90's. I'd take back my statement if it was 99.
