  1. I'm not going to address Lavar specifically here, but I take issue with the people who say it's stupid to waste X% of your salary cap on linebackers, or any other position. A great playmaking defense needs playmakers. If your best playmakers all happen to be LB, so be it. I understand budgetting money for offense or defense or special teams, and not wanting to overspend on backups. But once you know what you can spend on defense, let's say, what is to stop you from putting a huge chunk of that in one area if they're all starters? Granted, you'd love to have playmakers at every level, but sometimes you have to take what you can find. Plus, if you do have 3 star LB, you'd need to gameplan a little differently than if your star power was in the line. Regardless, you can always find room for stud defenders, and I think the Bears should be open to bringing in more if they get the chance.
  2. Really? I thought he got that nickname as soon as he stepped on the scene few years ago, before he lasted to one of the final cuts. I thought it was strictly a name thing.
  3. The Bears have gotten good CB much later than where they are now. A "plug and play" CB isn't going to be any better than what they have now.
  4. Grissom was never a very good player. He had a reasonably successful career. He had a couple good years, but he was never very good. His OPS+ was only above average 5 times in his career. But most importantly, while the guy was a servicable player in his day, his day is past. He's 39. He was god awful last season. He can't be counted on for anything this year.
  5. Just curious, what exactly has Maddux done above and beyond for this season?
  6. 1 AB? Very strange... I wonder what the goal is when you do something like that. What does a player gain out of getting 1 AB in the game and no on-field time? Is it just a matter of refamiliarizing yourself with being in the lineup everyday?
  7. I'd like to see them emphasize a bench where guys can do something really well, as opposed to a bench that does a lot of things rather poorly. There definitely is room for a guy like Pagan on a bench, but you have to build the rest of your bench to fit him in, and you have to go with 6 guys. Blanco Hairston Perez Sing/Restovich Mabry Pagan You get a RH slugger to help take out Jones whenever possible, plus a guy who runs really well if/when you have a pinch run situation.
  8. The theory would be that the longer he is out due to the knee, his pitching related delay increases exponentially. It's not a 1 for 1 situation, where if you miss 1 day, you take 1 extra day to prepare. What he's saying is everyday he misses could setback his recovery from his shoulder. It would erase the progress to date and force him to almost start over where he was a week to 10 days prior to the surgery. But I think he was saying "as much as a month" meaning worst case scenario. If he can't do much throwing for 10 days (doubtful, from what I can tell) then 10 days after the surgery he would essentially be where he was several days prior to the surgery, and would then have to start from that point moving forward. I also think that was taking into account the idea that Wood might have started by mid-April, something I always thought was doubtful.
  9. Bill Simmons wrote that column, or something very similar. Other storylines are: The guy in the best shape of his life. The pudgy guy who really got into shape this offseason. The guy who did nothing special earlier in his career but is expecting major improvements thanks to a change of scenery. The guy who gets injured all the team who feels completely healthy. There were a bunch, and it was very true whenever you spend time reading a bunch of spring training articles, especially if you read them about multiple teams. You'll notice that based on expectations nobody will be under .500 this year. I really don't pay much attention to these articles (although I do read them), and wait to see some results before I buy into all the hype.
  10. Can somebody explain to me how playing LF would make him more valuable? He's a good hitting 2B, but as an OF, he's hardly special. It's not that hard to find a decent OF bat, it is hard to find a good 2B bat. If he was a utility man, I could see the flexibility as something that could add to his value. But his next team is not going to be paying him to be a utility man. They are going to pay him because of what he did as an everyday middle infield. If he gets 10-12m per in a multi-year deal, he'd be highly overpaid as a OF.
  11. I was actually surprised at some of the positive things he wrote about Wood. And I agree with much of what he writes. Whatever Wood can provide is a bonus (although I'm expecting no less than 25 starts - less then that and this team is in a lot of trouble).
  12. Does sheme stand for shame or scheme.
  13. Why a veteran? I just want a good corner. The best aren't going to be available in free agency. Most of these guys are either past their prime, and/or have similar problems as the Bears guys. I'd love to get a good young corner out of the draft. It's a young man's position anyway, like RB.
  14. Who the heck is talking about the sky is falling? Why the heck is bringing up the topic considered sky is falling BS? Why do people have such a problem with others expressing concern of the oddities surrounding the Mark Prior spring training circus? The Cubs laugh off concern expressed by outsiders as a sort of "How dare they question us" mentality. I'm not here blasting the Cubs. I'm raising questions and I'm questioning those who wish to marginalize others who ask similar questions by pretending any lack of faith in the Cubs efforts is akin to sky is falling absurdity. I don't see how anybody could think everything is perfectly fine, given the history and the current path they are taking. Everything is not perfectly fine until we see Prior pitching regularly and effectively, and for whatever reason, the Cubs don't seem interested in exposing him to such scrutiny anytime soon. The Maddux thing was a joke. He's gone forever pitching healthy, and he's in a position to do what he pleases as he prepares and not be questioned about his health. Prior's history does not allow for such faith.
  15. Guys throw in rehab all the time, that doesn't mean they are 100%. The concern is due to the "throwing off the mound" thing (the Cubs practically celebrated that delayed event as some sort of accomplishment), and the continued lack of a timeframe. If the team had a plan to have Prior only throw side sessions and not to batters through early March, fine. But they keep talking about how there is no schedule and they are taking it day by day. If there is no schedule, you don't have a firm grasp of how he is progressing or likely to progress, and you don't know if he's 100%. If you don't know he's 100%, that is cause for concern. The Cubs are taking the out of spite reaction to all the criticism about their terrible handling of past injury recovery schedules. Instead of risk missing a date, they throw out no date. The problem with that is if they are worried about Prior missing dates, they are worried about his health in the first place, because why would he miss dates if he was 100% healthy?
  16. Most pitchers who haven't pitched yet are doing so because of some physical issue, like Pedro and his toe. The Cubs on the other hand are going with the cryptic, there is no schedule routine, and literally taking it day-by-day. You don't do that with 100% healthy pitchers. Why is that Maddux hasn't pitched yet? He's old. Listen, I'm not here saying I think Prior needs Tommy John surgery. I'm just saying it's perfectly reasonable to question the Cubs handling of him and absolutely ridiculous to blast people for bringing it up.
  17. exactly. if they had Wood pitching with a sore knee and later on the knee became a problem, or if they worked Prior like they have in the past and something went wrong, the same people who are crucifying the Cubs now would be on here saying "why didn't they take care of Wood's knee in ST" and "why didn't they handle Prior differently this year after all the problems he had in ST 2004 and 05?" You are suggesting then that there is something wrong that needs to be taken care of. I'm not crucifying the Cubs for "taking care of Prior in spring training", I'm questioning the claim that he's 100%.
  18. Most pitchers who haven't pitched yet are doing so because of some physical issue, like Pedro and his toe. The Cubs on the other hand are going with the cryptic, there is no schedule routine, and literally taking it day-by-day. You don't do that with 100% healthy pitchers.
  19. Really? I couldn't see it at all. Florida clearly isn't interested in taking on any salary, and Washington's ownership is all 30 MLB owners, so they would have to agree to pay for Soriano to play in Florida.
  20. It still makes no sense. Healthy pitchers are not treated this way. I could see a little extra caution early, but this is getting silly. If you don't see anything odd about the way they are handling him, so be it, but there is definitely reason to worry, and justification for expressing concern.
  21. nobody gets mad when Stone gives an opinion. it is the way he gives it that people get mad about. It just seems odd to me that people get so worked up about the tone of the message as opposed to the message itself. Kerry could be done as a pitcher sooner rather than later if he fails to change. Who cares if he says something about car salesman? The message still stands. There is something with Kerry's pitching that is causing him to get injured frequently, he and the Cubs need to find what it is and fix it. And when Prior is being babied this late into the spring, as he is, then everything is not hunky dory, no matter how much they pretend it is.
  22. No you're not. But it's very popular to bash BBT personalities and assume all ex-player analysts/color commentators know less about the game then they do. Kruk is a neanderthal. Most ex-players know what they are talking about. Kruk was signed for that "average joe" appeal, not for baseball knowledge.
  23. On the day of the blackout in NYC I walked from midtown toward the Lincoln Tunnel, and started asking people going through the tunnel if they'd take $20 to drop me off at the other end of the tunnel. Remembering the 10 hours it took me to get home after 9/11, packing onto the ferry and walking 5 miles home, I didn't want to deal with that again (not to mention the ferry companies were busted overbilling the government for that service and probably weren't going to be as helpful this time). It was early afternoon, and I was dressed business casual. I was probably ignored or turned away by the first 15-20 cars (all of which had the space). Then I asked a dude in a pickup who thought about it for a couple seconds then said yes. By the time we got to the tunnel he had picked up 2 more in the cab and 6 more in the back. Some of us just wanted to get to the other side of the tunnel, while others were asking for rides to certain exits on the turnpike (several more miles away). When I got out I handed him the $20 and he told me to keep it. Good guy, hope karma worked out for him. But at 4 am asking for a ride from the wal-mart to a gas station a mile away seems rather strange to me.
  24. I'll never understand why people get mad at Stone for stating the obvious. It's as if you don't spout the company line about how everything is going to be great, you're an ignorant outsider with no basis for you opinion. The fact that the Cubs are babying Prior right now is not a good sign. Healthy pitchers aren't treated this way in March.
  25. I would change the shade of blue before the stripes themselves. The current blue is too childish or something, I just don't like it much. Perfectly suits Zambrano. Zambrano is no child.
