  1. I would change the shade of blue before the stripes themselves. The current blue is too childish or something, I just don't like it much.
  2. They had the firesale to save money. Trading Willis and Cabrera would save more money (and bring in more cheap talent). Yes, Cabrera is cheap today, but by next season he'll make millions.
  3. I've long called for a color change, as well as losing the pinstripes on the home unis. yes, I know, it's tradition...but it's a losing tradition. nothing good has come of these uniforms, or the circular "C" since they first came on the scene in the mid 50's. Color change, as in complete overhaul like the White Sox in the 90's when they went black and white? The uniforms aren't the reason why they've lost a lot of games, changing them as some sort of effort to create a winner would be kind of pathetic. color change as in back to the navy like suggested by others. did you seriously interpret that as me saying the reason for losing is the uniforms? I don't like the pinstripes. the usual response to that is "it's tradition." my response to that is "yes, a losing tradition, so why keep them." I don't think I implied in any way that the reason the Cubs lose alot of games is the uniforms. You said nothing good came of the uniforms and they should be changed, it sounded very much like part of the reason you wanted change was for luck or something. I would like navy. I really like the old school unis they wore in one of the first interleague games, in Comiskey. They were very dark, and I don't think they'd actually go to those though.
  4. I'm not claiming it is a ringing endorsement. I just feel it's an indication that Grissom pretty much has the job unless a leg falls off. Grissom's got the job because there's nobody else to give it to. The young guys need to play in DM or AA because there's no way in the world they'll play for Dusty in Chicago. There certainly are other people to give the job to. Just because Dusty has problems properly using non-aged players doesn't mean non-aged players aren't qualified to do the job.
  5. His feelings are not at all irrelevent. The discussion is very much about how the Cubs handle injury problems and how trustworthy they are with laying out timelines. They brought on the mistrust themselves with the constant contradictions and overall poor handling of injuries. It doesn't matter if this particular situation was legit or not, it falls within the pattern of past discrepencies.
  6. This is frustrating, and symptomatic of the Cubs incompetent handling of medical situations. How so? Wood didn't tell them anything until a couple of days ago and then all he said was he had some discomfort. They did an MRI pretty much immediately then talked about what to do. It was a three-day turnaround. I don't see how this is symptomatic of anything. The difference between their story and the truth can be quite large. Regardless, even if this is legit, their history makes it next to impossible to expect people to trust them, so this instance just adds to the problem.
  7. I think the media blitz is completely dead. Interleague play as it stands does not receive any pub. If you want to publicize it, one series at a time will allow for more media interest. Assume for this year, the season opened with Houston/White Sox. There could be a lot of hype for such a series, then, down the line, you still have your Cubs/White Sox, Mets/Yanks etc. Run together those series tend to drown each other out (with Mets/Yanks taking most of the pub). If you run them in successive weeks sometime in the middle of the season, however, you'll get a longer media blitz. There's a big difference between "Hey, the Cubs, Sox, Mets, Yanks, Dodgers, Angels ......... are playing today", and "hey, it's Cub/Sox this week", " now it's Mets/Yanks" etc etc. Every now and then throughout the season there will be an interesting interleague series going on (not to mention the interesting divisional matchups) for MLB to promote. I don't doubt that MLB would hesitate on such a plan, they always fail to make the right decision. Usually they have a good idea but then ruin it with the details (WBC). But it can work, and can make the league better.
  8. That's not rational. This is frustrating, and symptomatic of the Cubs incompetent handling of medical situations. But does it change anything? Frankly, if you were thinking Wood was pitching in the bigs in April, it's your own fault. There's been enough hints to suggest we should be happy to see him in May. Would this procedure delay that? Probably not. It's early March. He can take a week off and resume throwing. Hopefully stretching out by mid-April, getting some minor league starts in late April, and finally ready for the bigs in May. Yes this makes the Cubs look bad (it doesn't matter if it's Wood's "fault", they all have trust issues with health), but it probably doesn't change a thing as it pertains to Wood pitching in 2006.
  9. i say go CB and move peanut to safety, let him fight it out with chris harris. i'd almost give ty law a look, he's a physical playmaker--that's what we've built our defense on. I'm afraid of Ty getting burnt a lot.
  10. No, I believe that certain people don't have to prove themselves, namely the good starters who aren't in real danger of sucking. Honestly I don't put much emphasis on spring training numbers. But I find it incredibly hypocritical to force kids to produce in the spring but allow vets to stink, and still give the job to the vets. I hate the idea that proven veterans are allowed to keep/win jobs simply because they've been in the majors before.

  13. I don't think he said they shouldn't have a team because of illegals. What I read was that it's a pretty poor town, and that a lot of the poor are illegals. This could put a dent in the theory that they could support a team based on the size of their population. Sheer size isn't all that important if the population is very poor with little chance to improve economically. I don't know much about SA, so I'm not making a judgement on its abilities to support a team. I do however find it interesting to read about others impressions of the place.
  14. No doubt there is no perfect solution. I just believe the 4, 5, 6 team division thing is stupid and unnecessary, and I think the same about the one whole month dedicated to interleague play. There is always going to be some sort of imbalance, but over 162 games, it doesn't mean a lot. And if you are going to have some imbalance, it's probably best to have it so last year's best face each other (improves odds of turnover - keeps more fans interested over time - even if it's only slight), as opposed to have the worst face the best (improves odds of perpetuating the same place in the standings - lowers the number of fans whose team has a chance over time - even if only slightly).
  15. So here you are saying that Dusty's words do not mean much, only past action. Which means those who are looking at his quote and working from there, aren't on the same assumption-base you're on. Can you explain this? How do you look like you can play, and at the same time not play well? It seems to me that if you're not playing well, you won't look like anything but a ballplayer not playing well. Ask Dusty to explain it. He is the one looking at his legs and bat speed and not interested in what he actually does at the plate. It's funny, a lot of people who support Dusty want others to believe that his oft-repeated absurd words don't mean much. I've always believed that Dusty's actions mean a lot more than his words. He talks off the cuff a lot, contradicts himself repeatedly, makes no sense often. But his actions have been consistent, and they are not hard to interpret.
  16. He was really good, and Dusty should get crap for not starting him there from the beginning when that was clearly Hendry's plan (he said it over and over all offseason). But reasonable people can still have questions about how he'll hold up. Control has always been an issue, and it didn't disappear. Inconsistency has been a part of his career.
  17. Some excellent points and one you have obviously put some time and thought into. Thanks I actually wasted a ton of time a couple years ago thinking about this. I just deleted the file a couple months ago.
  18. While I don't disagree, I think the potential for schedule imbalances (such as 2 division title contenders where 1 gets 6 games vs NYY/BOS and the other TB/BAL) It also seems that it would add even more complexity (could be wrong) to making out 162 game schedule for 30 teams. There already is an imbalance. STL gets 6 vs KC while the Cubs face the White Sox. It can also be set-up so the #1 NL team isn't playing NYY and BOS. You can keep 1 rivalry series (rotate home and away each year). 1 series vs the equivalent finish from last year (WS vs WS, LCS loser vs LCS loser, etc.). 2 rotating series with any other team.
  19. It doesn't have to be the stated position for people who have paid attention to Dusty and his moves to draw a reasonable conclusion. And nobody said "do nothing". He has to look like he can play. He doesn't have to prove that he can play well, he just has to look like he can. He is going to make the club, that is almost a certainty.
  20. Possibly not, but I see no reason why. MLB should consider doing something where they schedule some interleague foes depending on how last year's standings ended. You could pit the two World Series foes against each other on Opening Day, increasing interest. You could have all the last place teams face each other down the stretch, if you want to decrease the perception that interleague would affect the pennant race (in reality, since all games count the same, any interleague game affects the races the same). You could schedule a lot of likely contenders for later in the season if you want, again increasing interest in possible World Series previews. It can be done, without much of a problem (I once scheduled an entire season to map it out), and it could be really cool. As long as interleague play is going to stay (which it will) there is no reason why they can't do it.
  21. Like it or not, interleague is here to stay. If you go with 15/15, you can have 1 interleague series going on at all times, which essentially makes it a 14/14 league, easier to schedule. I see no reason to keep interleague all in one month. While some might prefer not to see interleague play in September when races are tightening, there really is no difference between that and regular play where a leader plays somebody in another division who is out of the race.
  22. Whose projection was that though? Dopirak has an unbelievable opportunity this spring. If he can show something, and learn something, he's got a chance to erase the negative impression from 2005 and re-emerge as a top prospect (and possibly become solid trade bait). All the publications. You are right, not from Dusty's mouth. I'm happy seeing Jones not there in the first 2 games though. Cedeno would be nice in the 2-hole if he can take some pitches and get on base. Didn't Dusty say in an interview around the time of the convention that if Walker was still with the team he'd probably be the 2 hitter? Maybe I just dreamt that? I think I read something like that. Perhaps he was saying that if Walker was on the team Opening Day, he would be the #2 hitter, but he is expecting Walker to be gone, so he's looking to see who else can do the job. Although, I remember more him saying that Walker would probably start if he was on the team, and not necessarily hit 2nd.
