  1. It's easy to say that know. But people were sick of Ramirez back then.
  2. I really think it's going to be weird to have Neifi, Walker and Theriot all on the bench. Dusty says this: But then they are apparantly willing to leave open an enormous hole, that of a right handed bat with any sort of ability to produce, while overlapping roles with other guys.
  3. The Cards lost some talent, but also got Rolen back. They're definitely the favorites. The Astros are the team that could be anywhere. Without some otherworldly pitching last year, they finish behind the Cubs. The offense still lacks, and I don't see the pitching being nearly as good. Oswalt could be even better, but I've never been a big Pettite fan, and 4 months of Clemens isn't the same as 6. I could see them finishing anywhere from near the top to all the way at the bottom. Another piss-poor offensive season, and the pitching might not be enough to make up for it this time.
  4. I find it weird that he hasn't spoken with Jerry individually yet, after a month and a a half of spring training. How does a manager not have a one on one conversation during the spring, with a guy who will potentially be the starting second baseman and #2 hitter? It's not like they guys are getting on a plane every other day.
  5. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060329downey,1,6383640.column?coll=chi-sportsnew-hed You can't come up with a persuasive reason to expect the Cubs to finish ahead of anybody? Then you aren't very good at being reasonable. And the interest and respect for the White Sox isn't coming anywhere close to a "Boston-like fever pitch." There hasn't been anymore interest or respect for the White Sox than for the Diamondbacks or Marlins when they won. I have to laugh when people say I'm an eternal pessimist with some sort of agenda against the Cubs. I think they can easily take 2nd or 3rd, with a possibility for the division crown. I'm hoping for upper 80s in wins, but think 90+ is attainable. Yet there are people out there picking the Cubs for another sub .500 record, and last place in a division with two sorry franchises and an overhyped cinderella wannabe.
  6. The question came about because he wasn't included on a writer's list of bullpen guys. He came out of one game early with a bad back, took some days off then pitched to only 1 batter yesterday, which has raised some eyebrows.
  7. If that's the case, Sullivan just proves how worthless he is as a reporter/journalist. I mean, if you are the beat reporter for a club and that is all you have to follow, that is just unacceptable. accountability & journalism is a oxymoron in most cases. I think that is a rather broad brush your painting with.
  8. A) You failed to differentiate between Hendry the minor league guy, and Hendry the GM. B) It's absurd to ask a fan to say what he should have done differently as a means to quiet complaints about the lack of success by the team. 3) The answer to that question has been laid out hundreds of times. Whether it was this offseason, last season, the previous offseason or any other time, there have been plenty of opportunity for Hendry to "do something differently." On a general note, he should have recognized the value of the walk long ago, both in how it helps your offense and hurts your pitching, by emphasizing players who draw more walks and pitchers who give up fewer. And he never should have hired Baker, the exact wrong guy at the exact wrong time.
  9. What do the Pirates have to sell? Bay :D That's crazy. He won't be traded until 2007.
  10. Why nameless? I want to find these Cubs haters and smoke 'em out.
  11. But maybe the mother kept him away for most of it until figuring out the PR from this story could help get more money. I'm not buying that. His quotes do not strike me as coming from a father who has been desperate to see a child over the years. You're right. I'm not saying he's doing the right thing. But relationships can change dramatically over 16 years, and we don't know the whole story.
  12. But maybe the mother kept him away for most of it until figuring out the PR from this story could help get more money.
  13. I'm talking about everybody. If you can't afford it, that's one thing. But plenty of people can pay and choose not to, and try and get the government to subsidize as much as possible. Having the kid contribute is great. Teaching the value of a dollar, however, should be done far earlier than college age.
  14. Jones can't check his swing and K's for out 2. I didn't hear the first at bat.
  15. Because HE IS HER FATHER. Just because your parents shafted you doesn't mean everyone else should suffer. I don't feel shafted at all, I feel that my parents taught me at an early age the value of a dollar, which will carry me alot farther in life than expecting someonelse to provide for me. How can you say this girl is suffering when her mother was given $70k a year for her benefit, maybe you should be lambasting the mother for being irresponsible with the money that was given to take care of her. Like I said there is nothing wrong if her Parents want to give her all those things I am just saying it shouldn't be expected. It's not like they are homeless or something. Paying for school should be expected. The other stuff is BS. The kid can get her own car, but college is much more important to try and instill life lessons. If you don't know the value of a dollar before paying for college, then school probably isn't going to help you.
  16. Salmon is now in the process of getting humiliated by Zambrano. Ks on 3 pitches.
  17. "Kerry Wood and Mark Prior went on the DL and Marquis Grissom retired yesterday, so it wasn't a banner day for the Cubs." Wood and Prior to the DL was old news. Why are all these baseball people so late to the story? And Grissom retiring was a wonderful thing. 3 runs on 5 hits, don't know the details. Zambrano is in the process of walking Erstad.
  18. I agree. It sounds to me like the mother was more than happy to keep him away from them in the beginning (16 years ago when he was a nobody), then started going after his money when he got rich. Randy is no saint (and this story has come out before), but the mother playing the "poor victim" here doesn't fly. I'm a firm believe in parents paying for their children's education, but that shady day care as a teen could have paid for community college.
  19. What small sample size? The career comparison is quite valid. Jerome threw over 100 innings last year for the Cubs, Rusch just had a couple more as a starter. Rusch has proven over a longer period that he's not good. Williams has shown over a smaller period, but a substantial one nonetheless, that he's better, and could keep improving.
  20. You say it right there, it would be a dream. It's not borderline pessimism to question the insane comparisons to Beltran and think of the guy as a 5th OF.
  21. Come on goony? Come on what? If you want to say Rusch pitched well as a starter for the Cubs, then you have to say Williams pitched better. His brief career has also been much better than Rusch.
  22. I guess that's why it was good we signed Neifi to a 2 year deal. As much as people complain about him, he makes a heck of a backup player... Why does that make it good he was signed to a 2 year deal? He's a decent backup if he's a backup. If he's pushed into the starting role by a management group that can't be patient with a developing rookie, he's not good for the team.
  23. Fine, that's probably true. But spot in the order doesn't mean a thing.
