  1. Where are we going to find these players. Young stud players don't fall from trees. Florida won a WS with Cabrera's attitude. Jenks epitomizes bad attitude and work ethic, yet he helped the Sox win (throw in AJ for attitude problems), several jerks in history have won titles with the Yankees. The Cubs needed another big bat even when Lee was healthy. Now they need one all that much more. I have always been 100% for giving up a lot for Cabrera, and I still am.
  2. Jim Hendry's pen and Dusty Baker's contract.
  3. He was 6-4 with a 3.89 ERA post all star break last year. How in the world is that "really bad"? He was coming off a broken freaking elbow, and came back as good as any reasonable person could expect.
  4. I agree with these points; I'm just saying that I think there's a reasonable chance of this happening. Everything seemed to come together in 2003 (until game 6 of the NLCS), snd so far it seems like they have this year as well. So far it seems like everything is coming together? Wood, Prior, Miller, Eyre and Lee are all hurt. Ramirez looks like crap. They're a few over .500 early, but you can't look at this team and say everything looks like it's coming together.
  5. Are those 7 wins the difference between a .500 team (81-81) and a .543 team (88-74)? That's a very large difference. And I think you're making a huge mistake by just talking about him missing 2 months. He's not taking 2 months to work out with a trainer. He broke bones in his wrist. I didn't think he was going to repeat his 2005 numbers. But when he returns the odds are his numbers will be even worse. We'll be lucky to get a 900 OPS out of him down the stretch upon his return.
  6. Change the first good to great, and change the second good to outside. If the first "good" is changed to "great," the second one remains "good." Great pitching would give the Cubs more than an outside shot. Okay, then forget outside, and just change it to "a shot". The Cubs do not have a good shot at making it. They are not, by any means, done, or facing an impossible task. But this was a mediocre offense with questionable pitching (capable of anywhere from bad to great) with Lee, and now they are a bad offense. I understand the desire to look to the positives here, and to prevent over the top depression. But make no mistake, this is terrible news and extremely damaging to the Cubs already relatively slim chances. You're talking about a team that was nowhere near a surefire 90 win squad, and taking away the best player. And not only are you taking him away for 2-3 months, when you get him back the odds that he'll be at full strength are extremely low. It's going to take great pitching, significant improvement from guys already on the team, possibly an out of nowhere emergence by a minor leaguer and definitely some sort of acquisition from outside the team in order to take this team where it needs to go.
  7. Change the first good to great, and change the second good to outside.
  8. Crazy british slang.
  9. The Arroyo deal benefitted both sides. Right now, every GM knows the Cubs plight and and deal would be made at a tremendous cost. Other teams are set at this point of the year. Other teams are not set. They have the perception of being in less of a bind than the Cubs, but they aren't set. They will all be willing to make moves. The Yankees are still desperate for both starting and relief pitching. All the teams in the west need help. Every year we hear the Cubs talk about how nobody else wants to make deals early, and every year we see other teams trade when the Cubs supposedly can't find a partner. Hendry can't panic and give up a lot out of desperation, but he can certainly take the next two weeks to start talking to teams about players that can both help now at first base and contribute if/when Lee returns.
  10. No, I doubt seriously that the Cubs would ever consider having Palmerio back on the team. Are any of the guys on the team today married to any tramps? Okay, so that's a trick question. Raffy in the clubhouse would be a bad idea. I think Raffy on the field would be a bad idea. He's done.
  11. MLS average 1998-2005: 15626 NHL average 1998-2005: 13173 Why are you comparing average per game? Per game doesn't mean much when you compare a 15 game season and a 40 game season.
  12. Can we use 2005's numbers? :P Seriously, though, I think the economic health of MLS is in much better shape than that of the NHL right now. MLS just got a sweet TV deal, attendance is up and nearly every team is getting or has their own stadium now. I think you are confusing the NHL with the Blackhawks. The NHL is doing great, with several very healthy franchises. The Hawks have been run into the ground by a bunch of traditionalist monkeys. The Fire might be bigger than the Hawks, but all it would take is one successful Blackhawks season to change all that. A Fire championship isn't going to grow them all that much. If both teams won their respective championship's next year, it wouldn't be close. The Hawks are a part of the fourth major pro sports league, they just aren't participating in an acceptable manner.
  13. # of different champs is not the only way to rank parity, nor is it close to a good way. Football has far more parity. Any team can go from worst to first in a year or two. Any team. There is no Yankees/Red Sox in football. There is nothing like the Braves in football.
  14. And what do they have 15 home games a year? Drawing less than a quarter million over the course of a season is hardly major. Granted, the Blackhawks probably struggled to get 500,000 in this era, but it still blows away the Fire. It's a little rough to punish the numbers based on the fact that it's a 30 game season. The league is still growing, so as more teams come into MLS I'm sure the table will grow. Right, they're still growing. But they aren't major.

  16. I honestly thought you were talking about 2005. I tend to forget about 2004 a lot because I witnessed first hand the Diaz/Brazill? game. That was just painful. Yes, Neifi was great for about 12 days there when he hit everything, and supplied some power. And then he started off 2005 just as hot. Of course, as expected he regressed over time and eventually played so bad in 2005 that he completely erased any positive impact from the hot start.
  17. :-k You know he meant 2004. Or more likely, 2005. Whatever year he was talking about, Neifi never had outstanding play. ***edit***Before anybody goes off again, by never, I mean never over the course of a year. Last year Neifi had a great couple weeks, sucked for several months, then had another couple good weeks. But overall, he sucked.
  18. I believe he was at 86. If he went another inning he would have most likely gone over 100. I think Dusty wants to keep his pitch count down and confidence up. It's better to take him out an inning too soon than an inning too late. That said, I wouldn't have cared if Dusty threw him out there for one more. As you mentioned, he was settling in nicely. Dusty talked about how Marshall has pitched well, but he's had endurance issues that led to bad 5th innings. I don't know how true that is since I was away for his previous starts, but I was not surprised he took him out when he did. I think it was the right move. Dusty is often very late to pull a guy, waiting for trouble to happen instead of avoiding it.
  19. If you guys want to pretend Neifi doesn't belong in a discussion about how Lee will be replaced, go right ahead. I for one am really concerned about Lee and how his loss will affect the team, namely because at bats that would be his would likely be used up by others, most likely a combination of Mabry, Walker, Neifi and Hairston. This wouldn't be a good thing. I don't see how people can have a problem with others expressing concern. Nobody said Neifi was going to play 30598245 games. But if Lee is down, he will probably play more than he would if Lee was healthy enough to play everyday, and that would hurt the team, just like Mabry playing frequently would hurt the team.
  20. It was that way until the Neifi defenders tried to change the tone. Now we have finger pointing? If people are going to come on here accusing everybody of unfairly bashing Neifi and complain that Neifi is even being discussed, then you're darn right I'm going to point fingers. This was about the potential loss of Lee and the cast of characters that might replace him (which inevitably includes Neifi), until Neifi defenders tried to start another referendum on Neifi bashing.
  21. It was that way until the Neifi defenders tried to change the tone.
  22. How many times do you have to hear that it's all about Dusty's usage, and not Neifi himself. All the complaints about "too much Neifi" bashing center on the idea that it's not his fault how much he sucks. I don't think people are blaming Neifi for sucking. I don't think people believe he could be any better. What people hate is Dusty's usage of Neifi, and a situation like this invites even further usage. And this thread had very little to say about Neifi until people came on whining about how much people complain about Neifi. I'm worried about Lee, not who is replacing him. Because no matter who it is, their presence over Lee is going to hurt this team immensely.
  23. Pre-emptive and usually wrong? Um, maybe you didn't notice, but Dusty's first choice was to insert Neifi into the lineup. He's used Neifi as his go to guy before in tight spots, and clearly has an affinity for Neifi. Anybody expressing concern about Neifi getting more playing time due to this is absolutely justified. Has it ever been pointed out here that Neifi is making a serious run at the title of worst hitter in the history of baseball? Substituting Neifi for anyone in your lineup is a bad thing, substituting Neifi for Lee is worthy of crying. Only about 300,000,000,000 times. It's should also be noted an equal amount of times that Neifi is responsible for terrorism, slavery back in the 19th century, genocide in Africa, global warming, and the loss of every species that is now extinct. Stupid Neifi. No, see, the truth is he really does suck and hurts the team when he plays. Those other things are obviously untrue, which is why we don't talk about them when discussing the Cubs and/or Neifi. We talk about his suckage because he really does suck.
