    500K is a lot more than league minimum? Chase Utley inf 7 years/$85M (2007-13) signed extension 1/07 $2M signing bonus 07:$4.5M, 08:$7.5M, 09:$11M, 10:$15M, 11:$15M, 12:$15M, 13:$15M I'm guessing CubColtPacer was using 2006 to come up with his average salary base. 500K is what Utley made last year. What he'll make for the next 15 years has no bearing on this discussion. He said "is" and "makes", that's present tense. I don't see how Utley's current salary has no baring on a discussion about current 2B salaries. What is the discussion anyway?

    Me either until i hear numbers. FWIW Brian Billick just signed a 4 year extension, prior to that on Jan. 17 he signded a one year contract at $5.4M. Lovie should be in his neighborhood. Guys.... you should be worried.... the bears arent even near offerring 5 million which is exactly where the market dictates his pay range. This is a cheap org. regardless of the massive amount of profit that this team enjoys. Yeah, I've heard that same nonsense for years, even after the Bears went year after year handing out huge signing bonuses to free agents. This isn't 1993.

    And what was the average salary for 2b's when you exclude the guys making league minimum, like Josh Barfield, Richie Weeks, Dan Uggla, Robinson Cano, Jorge Cantu, Chase Utley, Jose Lopez, Brandon Phillips, Jose Castillo and Aaron Hill. You have to admit that this is a pretty extensive list of minimum payroll talent. 1/3 of the major league teams worth. Chase Utley makes a heck of a lot more than the minimum. Anyways, that just goes to show you how easy it's been for teams to find cheap 2B talent. No need to pay big for such modest production.

    I think that's why he's talking now to get the Sox to make a move early before he shows his age this season. Yeah, that's what he was trying to do, but Boston said they weren't going to budge. I bet they are more than comfortable to risk having the price go up with a great 2007.

    So there's nobody in the majors who struggles with control and walk guys? I never said there was not pitchers who struggle from time to time with their command. But what sperates big league pitchers from the majority of minor league pitchers is the ability to change and locate their pitches consistently. Those who do not throw strikes consistently enough, will have a hard time getting to the big leagues. And yet there are plenty of big league pitchers who struggle with all of that, and a lot more often than "time to time".

    I don't think the Cubs would be better off with Blanco over Barrett. In fact, I know they wouldn't; that's absurd. But I don't think the Cubs should plan on Barrett being their longterm catcher either.

    I say if he's any good in 2007, it's far greater than 50/50 he stays in Boston. I don't see any hard feelings coming out of this. Schilling will probably take the highest paycheck, and Boston probably has the ability to beat most others (unless the Mets want to get more old guys). But I don't see any reason to even think about this until he shows what he can do in 2007. He hasn't been impressive since the bloody sock.

    Well, the results would seem to indicate that some sort of combination between the Hendry and Rothschild styles is to not focus all that closely on throwing strikes. Between those two guys, the Cubs have ammassed a pitching staff with record breaking ball throwing ability.

    I don't know how this story continues. It's been said repeatedly that it's a myth, yet everybody keeps referring to the gyroball. Why is that?

    There's a big difference between a manager who wants something and a manager who will enforce something. And a GM who cares about walks.

    This is pretty blatant "negotiating in the media" by Lovie's agent. And Mortenson is a pretty blatant sucker for these stories. I'm not too concerned.

    Is he ones of those freaks that for some reason regularly appear on Rome's show. The few times I've heard him it sounds like Jim has his guys, who he will defend and compliment to know end.

    What adds to this is that a lot of the fans bust their butt in the workplace to make a pittance of what professional ballplayers make and have no patience for a player who doesn't give 100% effort to play a game. I'm not making a judgment on Ramirez one way or another here, but am just trying to give some perspective as to the reasons some fans have the viewpoints that they do. And yet a lot of the complainers don't really bust their own butts 100% of the time, but they get all sanctimonious when complaining about ballplayers because it makes themselves feel better.

    If people are too immature or naive to know the difference between professional athletes and school kids they've got bigger problems. Another problem is the mistaken belief that baseball is best played in a balls to the wall fashion.

    He's also proven he can stay healthy. There's no way you can be certain he'll never be able to pitch a complete season again. He's had setbacks for certain. And it will be tough to pull off. But if he makes it through this year healthy and feels good going into next season, I don't see why he, or whatever team he plays for, would refuse to try to start him again in the future.

    i think this would be a big mistake. if he can stay healthy in the pen, with his stuff he will be very successful. he has proven the last few years that he cannot handle starting and to move him back would quite likely threaten him with a career ending injury. with guys like guzman, veal & gahallager and perhaps mateo on the near horizon to go along with z, hill, lilly, marquis, miller and hopefully prior the rotation will be very solid without him and the pen will be that much stronger with him. The rotation may or may not be solid. I think it would be a mistake to move him to the rotation quickly. But there's nothing wrong with moving him back there eventually.

    I agree. By no means do I think Turner is the greatest OC in the world. But I don't know of any better option. And I believe the best course of action is to maintain what they are doing, and look for improvement from Grossman. Add some O line help to the mix, and maybe another skill position guy via the draft. Plus, let him use Hester as an offensive weapon. I wouldn't mind if they brought in someone that they could "groom" for the Off Coord position for the future though. Some NFL team may be dumb enough to hire Turner as a HC sometime here, and we could be stuck. I think Wilson is in the process of being groomed. He was QB coach in Dallas for 2 years and now Chicago for 3. The TE coach was an OC in college for several years. He has been an offensive coach for several years, in many capacities, including head coach in DIII. Tim Spencer has been a coach for a long time. He has pro playing experience that could offset the fact that most of his coaching was in college. Likewise, Drake, the WR coach has pro playing experience, and vast coaching experience in several areas. Hiestand, the O line coach, has a lot of coaching experience, but would probaly end up following Turner if he went somewhere. I think one of those guys could become an OC. But the Bears coaching staff in general is very heavy in college experience. I think they could all use some more time working under an experienced pro OC, which Turner is.

    Oh I get it. I think those high profile ones are goofy looking. I've got a huge head myself, and don't wear hats often, but when I do, I just get the largest version of the low profile one.
