For a little more of a detailed plan to get Hill starts, this is what I'd do. Start him Sunday, in place of Prior. Start him in that same slot when it comes back up. When Prior returns, skip a Marshall start, slotting in Hill. Next time skip Marmol, then Zambrano. By then Maddux should be dealt and there's your opening. However, if Maddux is still on the team, and Prior is still active, and none of the others is hurt or traded, push everybody back a day to insert Hill in his next start. There's no reason not to use 6 guys if you are trying to evaluate what you have for next year.

In place of anybody. Zambrano should be rested a bit here and there. Marshall and Marmol are going to go way past normal thresholds if they continue on this pace. Maddux serves no purpose to this organization other than a reminder that the Cubs are one of the worst teams in pro sports in getting the most out of players during their prime years, but all too happy to pay big money for past performance in declining players. Either trade him, or skip him a bit. And Prior could miss any number of starts without surprising people.

That's what they've been trying for 12 years under MacPhail and it has failed miserably. You simply have to develop good hitters.

I wouldn't say it's a testament ot the coaching staff more than anything. It's a testament to the organization's overall philosophy. The coaching staff was hired, in part, because they share that philosophy. Hendry and others in the front office have downplayed or ignored the value of players who take walks for years. Whenever pressed on the subject they just talk about getting good aggressive hitters. The overreliance on aggressiveness has hampered this franchise for years.

Absolutely. They are a live band. The studio recordings take away everything great about the band and are only a shell of what the band is. I'd be curious to know how many of the people that have voted for the Pumpkins have actually seen DMB live and/or know that there is so much beyond the surface of their radio hits. Seems like lots of people here dislike DMB based on their opinion of other people that are fans of the band instead of making up their mind after actually listening to them theirselves. I can repsect different tastes in music but to vehemently hate DMB is just unbelieveable to me. I mean, I don't like Crash (Into Me) that much but I am aware that it isn't their only song! Too each their own though. 8) I think it's quite snobbish of you to insinuate that those who voted for the Pumpkins just aren't informed enough about DMB's greatness. I've listened to a ton of DMB at one time or another. I've never seen them live, but I haven't seen 90% of the bands in this poll live. Well, probably more than that actually. I find this kind of attitude in a lot of DMB die hards. I've got a couple friends that are incredulous when you turn down a chance to see them in concert or don't participate in a proverbial circle jerk when discussing the band. I think they've made some nice music. They aren't anywhere close to a rock band, however, and they aren't the greatest band in the world. They have a fantastic effect on the young ladies and are a perfectly suitable band to listen to on a camping trip or bonfire of some sorts. I like SP better.

What does fairness have to do with it? All teams have about the same number of total off days over the season. The Cubs are just burning one today. I don't think it's anymore beneficial for them to rest today than at any other time.

I doubt Miggy C is going anywhere. Willis, possibly, but Cabrera would be organizational suicide. He's arbitration eligible, and the cost will just keep going up. Pujols signed a 7 year deal going into his 4th year. Miggy will actually be at 3+ after this season, probably with comparable numbers. Florida is a dirt cheap franchise. If they were going to sell and/or move within the next year, I could see them holding onto him. But I'm betting they'd rather top off their kiddie corps with a fresh batch of cheap players.

I'm pretty sure the main reason is that Jim still thinks it was a good signing and that Rusch can help the team. I do not think he believes it was a mistake but just doesn't want to admit it.

You might be right. How about $120M plus replacing MacPhail and Hendry with guys that knew what they were doing? Now that combination would get you results. Hey, I'd love to see what this team could do with $25m worth of talent added on. But it's all about who is handing out the dough. As BBB pointed out, you'd probably just see Neifi and Rusch with longer and bigger deals, plus a few more expensive relievers. It's all about the brains behind the decisions. Money helps, a lot. But my biggest concern is that the Trib sees just how much of a waste spending more can be, and they cut back with the next guy who comes in. I don't want them to spend good money after bad, because that can only have bad results.

And because a team that wins a lot of games is going to win a lot of 1 run games (and a lot of 2 run games and 3 run games and 4 runs games.....). In addition, people like to over romanticize baseball victories. It's not enough to say Team A was better than Team B, they have to talk about heart, grit, destiny, clutch and doing the little things. A 1 run game can highlight a lot of what people interpret as those things.

If relievers are going to be this overvalued, Hendry needs to get on the horn.

They aren't 50% higher, it's more like 25%. Your assumptions on the ballparks are off. Boston has the highest ticket prices in the game. They also sell far more ad space, while Cubs fans complain when the slightest amount of advertising appears in the stadium. The Cubs get an extremely small amount of parking revenue as well. And something to remember is Boston is going on 3 consecutive years of postseason revenues added to the pot, and had an enormous boost in revenue related to WS championship memoribilia (something to remember when people say the Tribune has nothing to gain financially be a WS win).

Yes, but I still doubt they would have done any better. If anything, maybe 1 more win. Also, didn't he miss 3 straight before the suspension due to injury? Perhaps he wouldn't have been able to go in a few of those 10 games. Certainly not all 10. They went 3-7 with him suspended, which is just below their winning percentage with him. And without all that rest after the injury, perhaps he's not as good in July, when he helped them to more win than may have been expected. The rest was good for him. The suspension was bad for the team. But all in all, I can't list him on the top 5 list. I can see the argument for his inclusion, he's just not on my list.
