    I don't see what the Blue Jays ex-draft guy has to do with appreciating walks. That organization turned more sabr-centric when he wasn't there. You can point out little individual reasons why you think it's not true, but the big picture suggests otherwise. They are last in walks, by a wide margin, and the organization is dominated by overly aggressive hackers. There just is not enough to support the notion that he's coming along. Maybe he values walks to some extent, but the evidence shows he values them less than any other organization in the league. And that's what matters.

    The Cubs centerfielder is an awful defender. Who has insinuated that is unimportant?

    You make a good point with some of the lesser tier players he's acquired. But the fact remains, the minor league teams and big league rosters are dominated by guys who do not walk. This problem has gotten worse under Hendry's watch. So the notion that a couple trades where he got a patient guy indicates he's coming around on the walks issue just don't hold up.

    I think I know what he's saying, but he's not making any sense. That's his fault, not mine. Pierre doesn't score at will when he gets on base. In fact, he scores about 36% of the time that he gets on base, less frequently than Aramis or Jacque, much less frequently than Matt Murton. It's nice to come up with these theories that seem to make sense. But they just don't hold up to evidence. It's simply not true that a low OBP player with speed is better at leadoff for this team. It's an absurd claim that simply follows in the same lead us to nowhere line of thought that Hendry and Baker have. Speed is not the biggest need at leadoff, or anywhere in the lineup. OBP is the biggest need, with power a close second. The Cubs have been lacking in OBP for years, and decided to lack in SLG this year because of the erronious belief that their "wait for the 3-run homer" style was the reason they couldn't score.

    Except they will not decide to trade him. Hendry likes him and will keep him. Plus, $10m has gotten in the way before when players were up for trade.

    And he's acknowledging that. Despite what some want to say, this isn't the way things usually go with him and he's owning up to it. He had an extra crappy day on a team having a crappy day. Yeah, but I wonder if there'd be all this nsbb knob slobbing if, say, Neifi had done the same thing and then owned up to it. Like that 2 error play vs the Braves? What I'm trying to say is, Walker somehow got onto this NSBB manlove list where he can do no wrong, even though his OPS is near the bottom for NL secondbasemen. (11th). Aside from his obp, he really hasn't been that good this year. I don't get the accusations that Walker is in some sort of manlove list. He's a decent player who brings something to the table so few players on the team brings, and his cost/production ratio is among the best on the squad. But he's nothing special, and hardly a cornerstone player. Assuming they get something decent for him in a trade I wouldn't bat an eye if he's traded. Given his age and career path he probably doesn't have much time left being a solid contributor.

    What blows me away is how Dusty can continue giving the bunt sign on the first pitch after Pierre gets a single. That might be the dumbest call in the history of sports, and he does it frequently. Why? Waste an out to get a guy to 2nd base that 9 times out of 10 Pierre can get without anyone else's help. Not only is this team horrible in relation to OBP, but they also waste precious outs way too often when they do have runners on base. This is an absurd use of outs by Dusty. Instead of calling him out for terrible decisions, however, most people simply applaud his willingness to "make something happen". But isn't it more like 7.5 times out of 10, instead of 9 out of 10?

    This is not only strange logic, it's illogical logic. The best leadoff man for a team with bad OBP is a leadoff man with bad OBP?

    The corner OF hole didn't just come out of nowhere this offseason. They could have, and should have filled the hole long ago, before the options came down to Jacque Jones and Juan Encarnacion.

    If they get a good offer for him, they'd be stupid not to trade him. His pitching has added about one win over a replacement level pitcher this year, and that's the same level of performance that PECOTA expects through 2010. I'd rather see the Cubs go the Zambrano/Liriano route with middle relief; bring up promising minor league starters, and give them regular work out of the bullpen. Note to Hendry/Dusty: this won't work too well with 7 men in the bullpen. Ohman is a left-handed specialist of course he is not going to get alot of wins. His job is to get left handers out and he excels at that. Yeah I would consider offers for him but if im not overwhelmed im holding on to him. Not wins, as in W-L record, wins as in how much he affects the season. I'm all for trading Ohman in a good package. The Cubs aren't a lock to keep him on the roster next year anyway.

    Keith Hernandez on Novoa: Too many walks. Too many baserunners. What does Novoa do? Walks first batter.

    Walker can work counts, but that's about it.

    Not that surprising. Cubs are middle of the pack in terms of hits (with significantly more than several teams that have scored more runs). The problem is the last place in walks and so few XBH.

    SNY announcers pretty much said the Cubs have quit. They did so months ago.

    If Williamson doesn't come out to start the 9th, Baker should be spanked. It's not bad to double switch out the last hitter if he was the 8th guy (because the pitcher would leadoff). But if you weren't going to bring the guy out for the second inning, it's pointless (because you could just pinch hit). And that is just the type of move Dusty has made repeatedly.

    Angel with another huge day. What's that OBP down to? .275? That 2 HR game fooled a lot of people.

    Maddux only gave up 5 earned runs today. Not bad when you consider how bad he is compared to how good the Mets lineup is.

    Sore knee still bothering him. I'm assuming it's precautionary, with the wet grass, 3 run lead, no hope for the Cubs to rally back and his pre-existing condition.

    Not like it matters...I'm more ticked about X-NAD and the spiking at second going unretaliated. I didn't even notice he hit.
