  1. Marshall has shown the ability to get people out at the ML level and has made numerous quality starts this year. Obviously not every young pitcher is going to pitch like Jered Weaver or Liriano, but I want to see some progress which is what Marshall has shown at points this year. Has he had his setbacks? Of course. Most young pitchers do. But Hill hasn't shown any progress. Again, how could you possibly percieve "progress" or "regression" in only FOUR CONSECUTIVE STARTS!? Why couldn't you? If you are making the same mistakes for 4 straight startsl then you aren't exactly making progress right? You could perceive progress or regression, but you couldn't confirm it. Bottom line is you have to give him more than 4 starts.
  2. Yankees fans are pretty much panicking with the team under .600, but management doesn't seem the least bit interested in rushing Matsui or Sheffield back to the field.
  3. Somewhat productive? Um, his OPS is the 7th best in the league. I'm pretty sure that's more than "somewhat productive." I was referring to the past. He has been somewhat productive. This year is a career year, and he's been very productive. But the past two his OPS+ was just below and just above 100, basically average.
  4. Easily explained by the fact that Soriano is completely destroying his numbers from the past few years. edit: his ops is 81 points better than his career best and 121 points better than his average (which he was below the previous two years) I agree I was on the anti-soriano bandwagon but you can't deny the numbers he's putting up this year... I have never supported the idea of getting Soriano. I admit that he's been somewhat productive. The problem is that the hype surrounding him has grossly outweighed his real value. He is simply not a $10+ million player. And since the Cubs' biggest need has been OBP for several years now, Soriano would not be the right guy for this team. That's not to say he couldn't help, I just never thought he would help enough to justify the cost. Note: I am not sitting here saying Jim is an idiot for not getting Soriano. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if Hendry still got him, since he's such a prototypical Hendry target (hyper-aggressive athlete).
  5. Because they did it once they will always do it? You can't prove you will turn it on when it counts, you can only prove that you have done it in the past. But it's not like they stunk throughout 2005 and flipped a switch, they were pretty good all year long.
  6. Bullpen guys aren't who decide winners and losers, and they are easier to find/replace than solid position players.

  8. Possibly more than you would have assumed. "I'll be there," Briggs said. "I'm looking forward to this year. I'm more excited about playing football than anything. One thing that won't change is my ability to play football." Briggs revealed that he never seriously considered holding out of training camp. "It's football," he said. "Obviously I signed a four-year deal, and you honor your contract."
  9. Decline is to a pattern for him. He's getting worse and worse, because he's a one trick pony whose one trick isn't good enough to carry him into his 30's.
  10. That might be good news, but it's not a reflection of smart planning by the Cubs. It would only be an accidental by-product of their use of him. Hendry would have to realize that Larry and Dusty are bad for guys in order to purposefully implement such a plan, but at that point he'd have to fire them or else he's just sabotaging the others.
  11. It would be nice to get Tejada or A-Rod. We would prolly have to give up ARam to get either of those two. If its A-rod that would be fine... because hes playing third right now... if its Tejada move him or Cedeno to third. The Orioles already have Mora, I am not sure ARam is a fit for them ARam to Baltimore for Tejada would be a pointless trade for the Cubs. Actually, probably worse than pointless as Tejada will decline sooner.
  12. yes.. I definitely do NOT want the Pierre we saw in the first half, and what makes you say he will never start walking?? it isnt like he is striking out 50+ times a season. the most k's he had in any one season was 52 in 2002 with Colorado and he only had one other season where he k'ed more then 40 times. His age and his career are a very good indication he will not start walking. His lack of K's is not an asset. Just putting the ball in play is worthless if all you do is ground out to 2nd repeatedly. I'd much rather he strike out 100 times a year but actually produce than not strikeout but also not hit worth a crap.
  13. I don't think anybody would want Rusch, but we can always pray that some GM values him as much as Hendry does. The one thing you could consider is that if Jim wanted to get rid of Glendon, he could force another team to take Rusch in part of a package for players they might actually want. The problem with that is that Jim would have to realize that Glendon is bad.
  14. But he tries, really, REALLY hard.
  15. Vote for cutest couple. The ump and coach getting ready to make out or the Pepsi big gulp loving twosome in the front row. I like that the bat boy doesn't seem interested in moving anything but his neck.
  16. Yes, the could and the should are not alligned with the Cubs.
  17. So Hill was very good in AAA and now he's exceptional in AAA, and that somehow justifies keeping him in AAA the whole time? I don't get it. You could use that type of reasoning with sending down anybody. You could send Pujols to AAA and say look at the numbers he put up there compared to when he was in AA, obviously he was able to work on things and get better. That's hardly a defense for the "hey let's see what we can get out of Rusch and get that punk kid Hill out of here" strategy of the Cubs. Send a guy who has hastered a level back to that level and he's likely to just keep mastering it, quite possibly getting better and better. If you send Murton down to AAA he could quote possibly eclipse his .353/.421/.500 line from last year. That wouldn't justify such a move. Same with Cedeno. Same with Wuertz. Improved AAA stats after a guy has already proved he deserves a promotion from AAA is hardly sound reasoning for having kept a guy in AAA.
  18. 8 starts, spread over 2 years, with the 2nd start coming a month after the 1st is hardly an opportunity. An opportunity is when you give a guy a job, without the threat of demoting him after a couple bad outings. This would be like saying Matt Murton had an opportunity to start in LF if they gave him the job for 3 weeks last year, and 3 weeks this year. That's not an opportunity, it's a cup of coffee.
  19. 2+ million? Not according to this site. 2001 - 2.43 million 2002 - 1.78 2003 - 1.64 2004 - 1.58 Baseballreference.com adds 2005 at 1.81, last place in the NL.
  20. I think it would be a huge mistake to focus on OF defense this offseason. They need offense. If they can improve the defense with guys who can hit, great, but you have to get guys who can hit first. OF defense is not what is costing this team. Just like last year defense was not the reason for the failure. The Cubs have to realize that the reason for their failure is very simple. The offense has take too few walks and hit too few homers. The pitching has given up too many walks and too many homers. Fix those areas long before you worry about improving OF defense.
  21. Hill hasn't had the chance to progress. The problem with your theory is that if your 4 best starts are your first ones, then you get to keep your job, but if they are your 11-14th starts, and your first 4 were as bad as the other guys 5-8, then you lose out while the other guy keeps pitching. Doesn't make much sense. It's not like Hill has never gotten through a major league inning. Just look at Hill's first 4 extended outings last year. 4.1, O H, 0 R, 6 K, 2 BB 5.0, 5 H, 2 R, 5 K, 2 BB 6.0, 5 H, 2 R, 4 K, 2 BB 1.1, 7 H, 7 R, 1 K, 2 BB The difference with him is he had a full month between his first opportunity and his 2nd. He suffered a setback and then was given no chance to redeem himself later. Marshall had some decent, but hardly special outings early, suffered some setbacks, and was allowed to keep pitching. That's good. But that's the same chance Hill should have gotten.
  22. A) Because the Cubs have to make a decision on Hill soon, due to his age. 3 or 4 starts isn't enough time to make that decision. B) Those other guys have time. C) Those other guys have injury issues that don't need to be rushed. D) There's nothing to say other people can't start along with Hill. Marmol and Marshall are hurt. Zambrano has pitched too much. Maddux should be gone. Prior is day-to-day. Hill can pitch every 5 days and you could still find space for other guys.
  23. I've never understood your Rich Hill hate, or your flip-flopping on the Rich Hill issue. Haven't you been calling for his promotion recently? Basically, I love it when a Cubs prospect performs in the minor leagues. Rich Hill has performed to an exceptional degree. When a player reaches a certain age and he has performed well for a certain amount of time, I want to see that player given ample time with the big league club. I do not love what Hill has done in the majors, but that doesn't mean he can't improve. The only way he can improve, however, is by getting a long opportunity, without worry about his manager or GM calling him out for supporting a teammate, or demoting him after one bad outing. If Hill gives up 5 runs in his first inning back, he should still start 5 days later. If he gives up 15 runs in his first 3 games, he should start a 4th. There is absolutely nothing to be gained by not starting Rich Hill every 5th day, but there is a chance to gain quite a bit.
  24. this game was fantastic background noice for my afternoon nap yesterday.
