    That is complete BS dalgreen, complete BS. I'm resigned to the fact that Hendry is here through 2007. I don't think we might as well keep him, and I've never said anything like that. I think he should be gone yesterday and I've been saying it for a very long time. That doesn't even come close what you characterize the situation as. Pretty much everybody gave up on Hendry a long time ago. But there's zero chance he won't be back in 2007. There is a significant chance that Baker won't be here, so people are pouncing on that story more.

    \ 3 game winning streaks against the brew crew are apparently huge. Here's to a 15 game losing streak starting out with the Mets. I want Dusty humiliated and Hendry to look like the idiot he is. I want them both gone. But I don't understand those who want Baker fired right now but are willing to give Hendry another opportunity next year to overpay for mediocrity and "toolsy" players. Who is saying they are willing to give Hendry another opportunity? I haven't heard any Hendry support in quite some time around here, certainly not in the posts you quoted. The difference between Hendry and Baker is we know we are stuck with Hendry, because of the contract. There is a chance Baker could be gone. There's blood in the water with Baker, but Hendry's being kept in a high security chamber.

    My belief, after listening to a lot of Philly fans: He had a career year at age 25 in 2002, then signed a very big contract. In the very first year of that deal (which only paid him $1m that season), he was awful. This was also around the time that Phillies fans were expecting a lot out of the team. He was better in 2004, but not back to his career best, same with 2005. Philly fell short overall, and fans were pissed. It became easy to take the "what we have isn't working, so let's get rid of everybody" attitude. Plus, perhaps most importantly, he's a bit of a pretty boy/ladies man. Philly likes ugly dudes. It's an ugly city.

    I'm not claiming they don't spend. I just think that the situation today often clouds fans' perceptions about how it's been in the past. They dwarf the competition today much more so than in the past. I'm not so sure the Cubs should spend as much as Boston. A) Boston is the only team in all of New England. It's a huge fish in a gigantic pond, the only fish in fact. The Cubs share a city with another team, and are surrounded by rivals in neighboring states. B) Northeast money blows Chicago money out of the water. There is just a much greater pool of cash to play with there. When you look at the money available to the Cubs market, I believe their rightful place is about 4th-7th on the list of teams that "should" spend big money. NYY, NYM and BOS all have greater resources to play with. LAA, LAD and SFG can and should all compete with the Cubs for the next spot.

    For the right deal I would trade anyone on the Cubs roster. I don't think people want to give Aramis away but his attitude and lack of hustle leave something to be desired. You can critcize him for his effort, that doesn't mean you want to give him away. I don't disagree, but judging by what I'm hearing on the radio, reading in the sportspages, and seeing on other message boards, there's a growing sentiment that Aramis is a big problem and needs to be shipped out for whatever they can get. He's quickly becoming the player many fans are scapegoating. I actually agree...I think the Aramis issue is far bigger than it should be. After having had horrible third baseman for so long, you'd think we'd be happy with having Aramis...guess not. Aramis could have had a down year with or without Lee's injury, but because baseball works the way it does, his reputation will be forever tarnished by his struggles during Lee's absence. And the Cubs are just the type of organization that would standby that label that was earned in 2 months instead of a players entire career. Odds are he's going to finish the year with some very solid numbers, and at his age he'll do that for several more years.

    They have been significant, but not to the point where he's been bad on the road. He's had about a .350 OBP and .480 SLG on the road in 2005/2006. OPS+ adjusts for park factors, and he's been pretty good, outside of 2003, in that department. Nothing special, but pretty good. Think Carlos Lee territory, but younger, and much fewer years committed on the contract. (edit, while his baseball age is younger, he's actually only 4 months younger) Plus, in Cubs thinking, he's killed in Wrigley. :P (no, I don't put much stock in that claim).

    I don't think he was talking about Saturday blackouts. He was talking about the everyday blackouts in certain markets that are between MLB cities. When I think division series games, I think ESPN anyway. It seems like 3 of every 4 series is shown on ESPN to begin with. And how many baseball fans don't have cable now anyway?

    I think they figure that a baseball fan will choose to watch their national game if they don't have the option of watching their favortite team. Which is completely absurd. Why not just show all the games at once, like the NFL's Sunday ticket. My only choices on Saturdays are Mets or Yankees games, and I have never watched any of their Saturday games in the more than a decade that I've lived here. It draws away viewers.

    I don't have much faith that they'll clean house, but I do feel they will do something, at least by the trading deadline. Our best hope might be that Hendry forces Baker to fire some coaches, and Baker instead resigns, not wanting to scapegoat his friends. But Dusty isn't the type of guy who will fall on his sword, he's resisted, but sold-out coaches before.

    I'm pretty sure they've been trying to trade him for a long time and just haven't found any takers. Those outer years on that contract have been a noose on that team since the day after he signed. I like Burrell as a complimentary middle of the order slugger. I'd take him if it was a strict salary dump deal, without sending back much of anything in return. If they can get back some younger offensive talent by throwing in a decent arm or two, all the better. Pat is good, but not great. He's about a 115-130 OPS+ kind of guy while Abreu is more of a 120-150 kind of guy (and Jacque is a 90-105). Burrell brings some much needed OBP ability to the table. If they don't trade Jones, they could move him to CF, then acquire Burrell and another corner OF type to solidify the lineup. This would make it much easier to deal with Cedeno/whoever middle infield.

    I wouldn't be so sure... and I'd love to make that deal... What deal? What would they be willing to give up for a third baseman? Or do you just want to get rid of Aramis?

    Fox and TBS...eww. What do people have against FOX? I happen to enjoy their coverage, and the less Baseball I have to endure on ESPN, the happier I am. Very bad announcers. Silly graphics and sound effects. Waste lots of times showing things other than the game. They blackout saturday afternoon games. I have the extra innings package and couldn't watch the Cubs clinch in 2003, that's justification enough for hating Fox.

    Disagree. How many less of their 26 championships would the Yankees have if they didn't have the highest payroll year after year. I would guess it would be quite a few. It's not a coincidence that the next highest # of WS championships is like 9. Increasing the payroll doesn't guarantee a WS but it does increase your margin for error and with the right GM can help teams remain competitive year after year like the Yankeees and Red Sox. How many of the 26 World Series have the Yankees won with the highest payroll? Obviously you're right that the higher payroll increases flexibility and margin for error, but I think as it pertains to the Cubs we're in more need of better decisions with the money than more money itself, though both are plenty useful. All 26. I doubt it. In the mid-to-late 90's, Baltimore had the highest payroll. I'm pretty sure that for at least one, and maybe two or three of those titles, the Yanks were not the highest payroll. And I'd bet they didn't have the highest in some earlier seasons either.

    What did he do to Jones' ankle?? It has been refuted. But, it was said in the fight between the Cubs and Sox that Cora was under the pile biting Jones' ankle. Dempster said it to mike North, but I believe even Jones said it was false. How that started I have no idea? I have to address this. I heard the interview after the fact. Dempster did not tell North that Cora bit Jones. He talked about Cora, and said something about a story that Cora had once bit somebody in an onfield brawl before. He did not say Cora bit Jones. Look on the bright side, maybe Dusty will be forced to take it easier on Zambrano for a while.

    Unless that .330 OBP guy has a huge power advantage over the .360 OBP guy, there's no way he's better for your ballclub. You can talk all you want about guys who hit instead of walk, but the fact is you need guys who get on base, no matter how they do it, and you'd preferably take the guys who both hit and walk. Taking a guy who hits a little more but walks a lot less, just does not make any sense whatsoever. There aren't many players out there who primarily walk well, whatever that means. Guys either get on base or they don't. It's simple, you want the guys who get on base.
