  1. Carlos Lee doesn't do much for me. And I think there's no way in heck the Cubs get Lee and Soriano, especially if they're keeping Pierre. But I might be able to live with those lineups. Where are you imagining Jacque ends up?
  2. I would hate a manager like that. A manager should have to explain himself to the GM when asked, unless the GM is asking him about every little thing. If Joe can't handle a superior asking him why he did something it doesn't speak well for his ability to work within the hierarchy of an organization. I agree with you goon. The more I read about Girardi, the more I sour on him as manager of the Cubs. I'm not a big Girardi proponent, but reading too much into the little big of info that leaks out to the media is probably not a great way to evaluate the guy. I've read a lot about Loria being pretty petty when he wants to be too, so it's certainly feasible that he's leaking all the "bad" info about Girardi. I'm trying to limit my judgement to his actual game management performance, because there's just too much contradiction in the other stuff. Very true, which is why I said "a manager like that" and "if Joe..." I really don't know the truth here, although I could see this being the case. With the Zimmer influence, Joe might be a guy who makes a lot of moves on gut instinct, and it's hard to explain why you did something if you just thought of it on the fly. Plus, he went to Northwestern, so we know he's a jerk. :D
  3. On the Cubs.com site, it has JP current obp as .330 for the season. Ichiro's obp is .360. I'm not advocating JP over Ichiro, just pointing out that even tho Ichiro's obp is .30% points higher, that is not a significant difference. A .330 OBP and .360 OBP is significant.

  5. He's been playing a lot of CF this year, I believe. 174 of his 1240 innings have been in CF. 221 of his 8000+ MLB career innings.
  6. .311/.360/.392, that's a nice line for a 2B, not so much for a RF. Ichiro is a good player, with some freaky abilities. But overall, he doesn't bring a ton to the table. His OPS+ was 135 in 2004, which is very good, but it was 110 and 109 in 2003 and 2005. He'll be 33 next season, and coming off what is probably going to be his worst year in the majors. I fear you'll be paying (money and prospects) for the reputation, hype and name, moreso than for what the player will do for you on the field in 2007. If you have him in center, leading off, he would certainly be an upgrade over Pierre. And if he's in center next year and Pierre is nowhere to be seen, I'll be happy as heck. But I can only assume Seattle will be looking for even more than what the Cubs gave up for Pierre, and then you're looking at a 33 year old soon to be free agent who will probably be looking for a pretty hefty contract to return in 2008 and beyond. I'm all about the OBP he'd bring, but since it's so AVG dependent, can we really expect it to remain so high?
  7. Well, maybe you just didn't read much about the Cubs in the 90's, because they certainly did make statements like that, repeatedly. The plan was to draft and develop a plethora of arms, and trade for bats when needed.
  8. Actually, no, they haven't. It has been an awful year, though. Are we forgetting 2005? How about the entire MacPhail era? This isn't a flukey off year.
  9. The current team is almost 100% different from the 2003 team. Hendry hasn't shown an ability to make the right decisions, but he's shown the ability to turnover the roster with multiple moves. As a worst case scenario, you have Pie ready to step in. You already have Jones on the payroll and locked up. I'm not asking Hendry to pull off a miracle, like trade for Cabrera (though that would be nice). Heck, I'm not really asking him to do anything. I'm just asking him to not make the mistake of resigning Pierre, like how he made the mistake of giving a raise to Alfonseca, resigning Rusch and Perez, and trading for Pierre in the first place. I'm asking for inaction at this point, doesn't really require much bandwidth.
  10. http://www.chicagobears.com/news/NewsStory.asp?story_id=2408 LAKE FOREST, Ill. – All seven Bears players on Wednesday’s injury report are listed as questionable for Sunday’s home opener against the Detroit Lions, meaning that they have a 50 percent chance of playing. The group consists of defensive tackle Tommie Harris (ankle), linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer (head), safety Chris Harris (ankle), receiver Justin Gage (rib), defensive lineman Israel Idonije (ankle), tight end Gabe Reid (back) and fullback J.D. Runnels (ankle). Of those players, only Chris Harris and Reid did not practice Wednesday. Gage wore an orange jersey during the workout, signifying that he is off-limits to contact.
  11. I'm not all that excited by guys who are so motivated by individual awards.
  12. Scott Moore is hardly a hang your hat on the guy type of prospect. He's had a pretty ho-hum minor league career. The Cubs have very little choice but to resign Aram. If they fail, they must acquire somebody who stands a very good chance of being highly productive in 2007. Scott Moore is not that player.
  13. The Cubs don't have right to be picky. They have to gamble. It's much better than their longstanding strategy of sticking with mediocrity. But what happens if we sign Nomar and he misses most of 2007? Then are you going to criticize the Cubs for stupidly spending money on a player that is perennially injured? Would that be the only move? I would sure hope not. Considering that I wanted the return of Nomar as part of the 2006 strategy, I have already contemplated the threat of him not being around all year. The key is to not center your entire season on such a player, like the Cubs pretty much centered everything on Prior and Wood the past few years. They'd still have to get offensive upgrades elsewhere.

  15. I doubt that.
  16. A) You have to find that platoon partner. B) You have to find a manager that will platoon them properly to get the benefit. Drew's production will be higher than Jacque's, the only question is how much. It stands a pretty fair chance of being immensely better. The Cubs need to go for the gold here. Simply settling on mediocrity because of minimal downside risk has got to stop being the modus operandi. This is especially true when the Cubs have proven that settling on mediocrity does have as much downside risk as going for broke with somebody who at least stands a chance at greatness. The Cubs don't have a million options to choose from. They need to find some offensive upgrades, and Drew is one guy who provides that. You can also think of it as replacing Pierre/Jones with Drew/Jones, Jacque doesn't necessarily have to be the guy Drew replaces. If the Cubs can find a way to put Tejada or ARod at shortstop, or get Abeu for the OF, a move that guarantees increased production, great. But the next best thing is a move that gives them a solid chance of improved production. And they can't afford to disregard players like Drew. They don't have room to be picky.
  17. Didn't all this start with somebody calling the Cubs system garbage, and then another person saying Pie is the only guy with a good chance to be a good everyday player? Being 90 on a list by a guy like Perry isn't all that great of an endorsement in my opinion. Being a top ten at a position isn't all that special either, especially at catcher, where so few quality players are produced.
  18. I still can't understand why people bring up the idea of priorities when it comes to letting Pierre go. Pierre is not productive. Pierre costs a lot of money. Letting him walk is the smart thing to do. It's not a matter of moving CF up the list of priorities. There's about 5 quality consistent closers in baseball, and none of them are available. The Cubs need to stop putting money into the bullpen, they've got more than enough dedicated to that department, and plenty of arms to shuffle in and out of there. Starting pitching is a priority, yes. And it will be all the more easier if the Cubs let Pierre walk, and save that money to spend on a better pitcher.
  19. I heard him say this too. It seems he trying to justify his voting for Jermaine Dye when there are clearly better players, more deserving of winning the MVP. There are only 3 AL players with a higher OPS, and they are all pretty close to each other. I think he's as deserving as just about anybody else in the AL to be in the discussion. But then again, the only thing I find less interesting and more annoying than post season award debates, is hall of fame debates.
  20. That's only true if they are fast. Slower guys can't score.
  21. You assume correctly. :D But to answer the question, it was changed a couple of years ago (I'm not sure exactly what year). It's now based strictly on record without regard to league. I haven't really paid much attention to the draft since the Prior/Tex debates. According to wiki, 2005 was the first year they did it without regard to league.
  22. Could you imagine this team with a $7-10m 8 hitter?
  23. I'm still hesitent on bringing him up in 2007. But if they put together a solid enough lineup so that Pie can hit 7th or 8th and not have any pressure to produce right away, I can live with it. It's certainly a better option than signing Pierre to a multi year deal.
  24. Are people trying to claim that Fox is a top prospect?
  25. With KC & TB possibly ahead of us (at # 1, & # 2), that could be a distinct possibility. I'm assuming this has been asked, but have they done away with the AL/NL/AL/NL thing for draft picks?
