  1. You couldn't be more wrong. There is no possible way to justify claiming that defense is WAY more important than offensive production, no matter the position. To do so would suggest that a 500 OPS would be acceptable as long as the guy was really good with the glove, and that just ain't true. Offense is immensely important. And since good fielding middle infielders are a dime a dozen (considering the Cubs apparantly had 4 on their roster this year), what matters is the difference in offensive production. If a guy is a butcher, he'll hurt you. But as long as he's average, you're much better off going for the offense.
  2. izturis has sucked with the glove

  4. Sanjay H. huh? Sounds like a made up name.
  5. I don't understand what they did wrong? The pitching staff went south. Who knew that Buerhle would crumble? . They didn't do anything wrong, per se, because they are still going to finished the season over .500 and prolly close to 90+ wins. The problem is....the White Sox as a team didn't have their "hunger" or "urgency to win" they had last yr. Last yr they a sense to need the win in the worst of ways, this yr, winning was AS important. That was their problem. I don't think that's true. But it'll probably make for some good columns.
  6. I concur, but it's debatable between him and Pierre. Career OPS+ of 90, JP was at 87 entering this year. Career high of 109 - 2002, compared to Juan's 107 in 2004. Career line of .263/.337/.420 compared to JP's .302/.351/.377. JP will get the longterm deal because of reputation, not necessarily production. I wouldn't want either one next year.
  7. Since we're handing out jobs based on small sample sizes, Ronny is hitting .314/.352/.451 in over 50 September plate appearances.
  8. Is this an indictment of Pierre? If so, how is it? I'm not being a smartypants; I was under the impression that runs are much like RBI in that they are not representative of an individual stat. It's team dependant, but the implication here is that Bellhorn scored more frequantly (compared to ABs) because he got on base more often. It's not that hard to rack up a high number of hits, runs or RBI. Batting leadoff each and every day, and never walking, will make it quite easy to get a lot of hits. Batting leadoff and getting on base an average amount of times, will rack you up a lot of runs. Batting in the middle of most any lineup everyday and you're bound to get a lot of RBI. The rest of the team affects the latter two categories, but your OBP is going to greatly affect your R, and your SLG will affect your RBI.
  9. I bet you can't. finally ready to admit I am right and you are wrong, eh? About what?
  10. It's kind of interesting that the WS have all that money tied up in those pitchers, whose best quality appears to be their ability to throw 200 IP, and one of the things Hendry is most likely to go after is pitchers who can give him 200 IP. And I wonder just how likely KW is to exercise the option on Buerhle.
  11. We had much more hard evidence to show that Neifi did indeed suck though. If you want to contend next year Theriot should only be considered in a bench role, but if you want the aim for being midly competitve in an effort to make a big run in 2008, knowing with the way the NL is even a midly competative team has a chance with a little luck, then Theriot should at least be given an opportunity to take the 2B job. 2000+ pro at bats is pretty hard evidence. Sure, let him compete for the job. But he shouldn't be handed the job, and the Cubs shouldn't steer clear of potential improvements because Theriot has looked good.
  12. And then go look at Neifi's first 100 at bats with the Cubs and tell me how that panned out for the team. Theriot won the battle of best start in the majors. Good for him. I hope he stays on the team. I think he can help, especially at his minimal cost. But 100 ABs do not erase 2000 minor league at bats. It works the same way whether the guy was a great minor leaguer and sucked to start in the majors, or a mediocre minor leaguer who was great to start in the majors. Obviously we want everybody to start hot. But a hot start is just a start, and it's not all that indicative of anything going forward.
  13. Making contact isn't an accomplishment. The 2006 Chicago Cubs are some of the best contact makers in the league, if not the best. And they still suck. That's not ultimate.
  14. A park in the burbs is a terrible idea. Baseball is a public transport game, especially in Chicago, and especially with the Cubs. Moving to the burbs is for southern california teams and small cities with no city life.
  15. Thome is done? He's got a 1000+ OPS and will probably have played in 140+ games.
  16. He was running with the pitch. He was only allowed to stay on 2nd because the foul tip went directly into the glove, which counts as a strike. If it hit the dirt, or was bobbled, it would have been a foul ball. It's the same for striking out on a foul tip.
  17. My first thought was he was being sarcastic, but it would seem to be very un-Dusty like to do something like that.
  18. The last middle infielder with an unimpressive past to have a very hot start to his Chicago Cubs career was Neifi Perez.

  20. That is partly due to the NFL having a salary cap and the ability for a football team to cut a player and not owe them the rest of the salary. I know. But it's not like Neifi has a 7 year contract. He, and others like him, keep getting jobs they don't deserve because baseball GM's are far too dependent on tenure.
  21. He is currently 30, and will be 31 this coming January. His next contract probably takes him from 31-35.
  22. I agree with that notion. The only problem is that before this year, Soriano wasn't a very productive player. OPS+ of 98 and 110 the last two years wouldn't be something I'd like to overpay for, especially if he's a corner OF. He was more productive with the Yankees, but he was just a piece of a great lineup back then. And then there's this season. Ideally I'd go elsewhere, but the Cubs probably won't find many better options, if any.
  23. I'm assuming Hendry doesn't come close to signing a big money pitcher, and his efforts will be placed almost entirely on the decent arm that will give you 200 IP, with emphasis on the number, not quality, of innings. And he might go for two of them.
  24. As a native Chicagoan who has been in the NY area since the early 90's, and still makes it back to Chicago, I'd say there's a significant amount of that obnoxious attitude in both cities. Maybe that's just because I was at Soldier Field yesterday, but you get plenty of jerks. Although overall, I'd definitely say Chicago has a little less.
