  1. Someone a little while ago mentioned Cris Carpenter. He was simply horrid the two or three years prior to becoming a cardinal. Though it's not exactly a great comparison, it is noteworthy that Meche is solid (but not stellar) and if we can get him for 3 yrs/20 or so million, then why not? Padilla would cost too much We won't get Zito or Schmidt. All this is a crap shoot, and Piniella probably has Hendry's ear on this guy. Depends on the cost I guess.
  2. Maybe so, but his defense is horrid. The Reds would want more than we should pay anyway.
  3. There has to be someone worse than JH.
  4. I still don't see how the brutal defense and all the strikeouts from Dunn is outweighed by the home runs. Isn't this the exact thing the Cubs should try and stay away from? I'd rather they sign JD Drew for center and use DeRosa in center if he gets hurt. And as for Soriano, giving that guy more than four years is sooo risky. He's not worth it.
  5. Then someone missed saturday night when the deadline passed, and people were sharpening their pitchforks and calibrating their rifle scopes. Clearly there are people on here that do nothing but shoot holes in anything the Cubs do. Craig Wilson??? What are you kidding me?
  6. I think he can be a useful player Goony, I'll stick to that, and if he does turn out to be useful, then the people that maligned Hendry for signing him can be a man and apologize about it. 4 million is a lot to pay, but not grossly so, for a man that can be very useful should there be an injury.
  7. If the Cubs win the WS next year, there are people on here that will complain that they should have won it in 6 instead of 7 games. Some people just will never stop being critical. The Cubs sucked last year, we all know that. Let's hope DeRosa will help.
  8. This is stupid, can't we debate something without getting nasty? Geez
  9. There's no way in this market this year that you could get reasonably productive players on the cheap. Wiggy is right, Pierre is going to get a ton...stupidly. Even Maddux will probably get a two year contract. The Cards will pay 19 million to an injured and declining Jim Edmonds. Most people on here (including me) on saturday night were ready to tear out JH's living guts because we all thought that Aram was gone. Give the man a chance.
  10. So Goony, in the same role, who would have been better than DeRosa? Just curious
  11. It's not hard to see that DeRosa could clearly be a good signing for the Cubs.
  12. Hendry will never do anything right will he? At least for some people. Before anyone panics, I'd like to know how he plans to use this guy. I don't think Lou will care if DeRosa's pissed if he loses his starting job...which is a big change from Dusty B. I think there's a fair chance that DeRosa is a late bloomer.
  13. This is not a bad signing. Theriot can be a super-sub just about anywhere I would guess and it's already been mentioned that he can spell Jacque against the lefties. And I hope Hendry totally gets outbid for Soriano if we have to give him a six year contract. 13 million for three years is chicken feed these days.
  14. What happens to Murton then? Does he go to RF or becomes 4th outfielder? Or do you ask Burrell to play right?
  15. Drew's too good a fit for the Cubs for Hendry to consider Soriano. A left handed bat in between Aram and Lee...too good a fit. I think Hendry signs Drew, and if he doesn't, it's not without trying.
  16. Is there some way that you can fax or email this to Hendry's office? This sounds perfect...a little dream-like...but perfect
  17. I agree with Soccer, without assuming any "what ifs" in the name of wood for the bullpen and prior and/or miller for the rotation, if you obtain decent innings eaters like batista, padilla, or lilly and eventually get some help from some of our own talent, the cubs will contend if they've bolstered the offense. The Cards proved that this can be done. I also wouldn't say that the Cubs have nothing to show for the last few years insofar as pitching is concerned. Only about 1/10 prospects makes it to the show anyway, so having Zambrano and hill in your rotation makes your rotation 2/5ths home grown... I have renewed confidence in Hendry, let's see if he can use his past gunslinger mentality to get us something worthwhile.
  18. Dunn is such an enigma to me. A guy with a career .245 ave and career .380 obp. If only he'd strike out 50 less times and keep the same number of walks, I'd feel like the Cubs should go after this guy. But he's a train wreck in left...geez.
  19. I think the whole organization is just dumb, that's why they don't pay market value. It goes clear back to Maddux when I believe that Larry Himes thought Greg Maddux didn't deserve more than what was offered because he didn't win 20 games until 1992, even though he had won 18 and 19 games in previous seasons and clearly was worth it. But of course paying for Danny Jackson WAS worth it. It's like an insidius disease and it becomes contagious to the next batch of management types that run the team.
  20. Yeah, it's a good thing Z can hit, because he will need that skill when his right arm has to be sutured back into place after pitching 412 innings next year.
  21. Crap! You are right! I forgot about that! That almost makes me feel worse...as if that's possible. Lee Smith...yeah. Damn...
  22. Does anyone think that Jim H lurks on here somewhere? I'll bet he does......
  23. Just ONE time I'd like to see Jim H. have the guts to come on here and defend himself. Never happen. Maybe Bruce M. can give some words of encouragement after he cleans the barf off his keyboard after writing the Aramis Ramirez Cubs Obiterary.
  24. ...and dip those pitchforks in a paralytic of some type before skewering poor Jim with them.
  25. You know most of us have been Cub fans all our lives. In the end, this move with Ramirez is not surprising. Who remembers losing Maddux? Yeah, we all do. Who remembers trading Rafael Palmeiro (the non steroid version) for who was it, Al Nipper and Calvin Shiraldi right? The Cubs as an entity, regardless of who is making the decisions, are an entity that cannot be defined with any sense of logic. And because of that, we should be surprised by nothing...and we weren't...and we will continue NOT to be surprised by the fact that they are impotent as a baseball franchise and until there's a TRUE change in philosophy...it will always be that way. But 'Go Cubs' anyway...I'll watch them even if they suck...I wish I had the power NOT to do that.
