  1. I'm amused by this because the same people that say they are done with the Cubs will be the same people all excited that they win two in a row. Man, these guys are "lousy", as the two asian groundskeepers said in "Major League", maybe we can pick up Cerrano on waivers...
  2. I find it funny that 45 games into Lou's first season and some people want to roast the guy. What the heck is he supposed to do? He was saddled with the players he has. I've said it before, and so has Spark Anderson: You are a genius some years and an idiot in others. It all depends on your players and a little luck. The Cubs are the Cubs. They are Newton's footnote, they are an enigma and always will be. Those of us that choose to be Cubs fans know this, and continue to love them and hate them all at the same time. Dusty was probably good because he had Barry. Lou was good some years because he had good players. The Cubs suck for clearly definable reasons. It's not because of the manager. Hendry is more to blame than Lou is, if anyone at all can be singled out. Usually problems in life and in baseball are a collective failure, not that of one individual.
  3. Eyre is going nowhere. And with the team ownership in transition, we have what we have. Nothing will change. We can only hope that they get some guts and iron things out or that the offense will score more runs than they have.
  4. I think it's wishful thinking that any veteran bullpen pitcher will be outright released. And I don't think they can be sent to the minor leagues unless on rehab. We are stuck. Firing Hendry does nothing (except gratify NSBBers), firing Rothschild does nothing. If a man can't throw the ball over the plate and he's signed for another year or two, then there's not much to do about it. The Cubs suck and if you keep following them, then you are clearly clinically insane!
  5. If Larry was good enough for Jim Leyland and Dave Dombrowski for a three year contract offer, then that tells me that he's good at what he does. Is there a pitching coach that doesn't have his winners and losers? Clearly Howry and Eyre were rode like horses last year on a hopeless near 100 loss season by a manager that didn't know his business (same for Prior getting ridden the same way). Lou has done a much better job handling the pitching staff, he just can't throw the strikes for them. Larry Rothschild is good for this team.
  6. Collectively, if these guys don't stop walking people with games close and on the line, then it will likely spell doom for the Cubs. Lou knows this, and that's why I think you'll soon see two or three new guys down there...and more later until we find guys who throw strikes.
  7. Does it really help this team to have a different starting lineup almost every day? With everything about the lineup in flux all the time, does this help or hurt the Cubs? Clearly, I can't see that this helps them at all.
  8. I agree with how to use Eyre in non critical situations. But in defense of Lou, he's really had no choice in many of these situations. Since Ohman couldn't get anyone out last week and they've had so many long games with lots of bullpen use AND they have gone with 11 pitchers.
  9. Don't forget Lenny Harris on that distinguished list. Relax people, they suck, but they aren't that bad. Lou can't change 100 years of futility in 19 games.
  10. Hendry bashing again. I suppose he gets no credit for acquiring Lilly, Marquis, and Cotts...who have all performed well? And for getting Soriano, who will help this team? I think there's plenty of blame to go around here. Again, they suck for a multitude of reasons, Jim Hendry being one of them, but not the only one.
  11. What makes this team worse than any other? No way, these guys aren't nearly as pathetic as many other teams over the last 25 years, not after 19 games anyway. Give it another month before they get the gold star for futility.
  12. I don't think Lou has done a bad job with the bullpen. He's not the one walking leadoff hitters and giving up home runs at the end of games. If a major leaguer can't throw strikes then find someone who will. Eyre grooving that easy curveball to Fielder last night was simply pathetic.
  13. I have to agree. There's no reason to panic yet. Another month of this and I think we can write them off.
  14. The problem, as always with the Cubs, is that for every D Lee there's an Izturis. For every Aramis there's a Cedeno. Without some decent balance on the bench and in the bullpen, they are doomed. And welcome to Cubville. They get pretty good starting pitching, and can't get anyone out at the end of a game. Same old Cubs. At least one thing in my life is consistent.
  15. A manager is only as good as his players, I think Sparky Anderson (and others?) have said that. Case in point: Dusty Baker and Barry Bonds in his prime...made Dusty look like a genius. It seems there are guys on here who bash everybody. Whether that be Stoney or any other commentator or writer...I tire of the bashing on here sometimes. I'd rather discuss baseball.
  16. You might be right. Maybe we should just throw him into the rotation. But I doubt that will happen, Miller will get more opportunity to right the ship. Miller isn't the reason they are losing. He's just one piece of the machine. I think he should get more time.
  17. Floyd's a better hitter than Murton when healthy, certainly he's more of a threat. He should get more playing time than Murton. And Miller will get more than one more start for the Cubs. We may as well get used to seeing him for a while, especially given how Guzman pitched at Iowa in his first start.
  18. I guess I agree with what Stoney said last week, I think it's premature to trade Jacque. He's one of two legit left handers we have. He's not stellar, but he is solid. Trade Jacque, and Floyd gets hurt...which he will...I don't know, seems we should keep him for a bit in my opinion
  19. This is really amazing. 8 million per for this guy. I'd way rather pay Maddux similar money for two years, at least you know you'll get 210 innings and an ERA around 4.20 or so.
  20. I personally think that Soriano is going to improve in ALL statistical categories and that this comparison with Hawpe is a moot one. I have nothing to back this up. Compared to what the Cubs had before, he's going to be a monstrous improvement and addition to a lineup that desperately needed power and speed. But I'll take Hawpe, too. Won't happen, but I'll take him.
  21. For approximately the same average annual value, the Cubs got the better of this deal with Soriano, instead of CLee. I guess that's obvious. Duh.
  22. If the Cubs would need 126 more walks to finish in the middle of the pack, then DLee will give you better than half of those, maybe most of them. Not having him in the lineup made a huge difference. Made the Cubs look worse than they should have all the way around.
  23. Did the 'Stros ever get that insurance money for Bagwell's shoulder? That will pay for the first year of this albatross, ridiculous contract I suppose.
  24. Would "slightly above dumb" work? Clearly he's on the right track here. Given the market, signing Soriano was a smart move...despite the money... As this offseason unfolds, I think he will have repented for many (though not all) of his previous years transgressions. Just my opinion.
