  1. I read it to understand that he can't profit from "selling" the team. He can still profit from them if they are a successfully operated franchise, day to day.
  2. Because you play in an adult county league and he plays in major league baseball. ...which is actually the opposite of the thinking I was going with there.
  3. And to be fair, I think most people on here had given up on him too.
  4. 'I just want to be honest with you. I'd love to come. I want to help you guys any way I can. But playing first base is not something I'm going to be able to do -- maybe in an emergency situation, perhaps.' Without knowing all the facts.. why can't he? I play in an adult county league and there are some 40+ year old, broken down men with far less conditioning than Thome gets that can field the position adequetly. Is he really that lazy?

  6. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a57/zeta1344/DEXTER.jpg Too late.
  7. Yeah, I'd totally rather rely on Gaithright and Fuld then see if Pie could still figure it out in the same role. We're way better off this way.
  8. Has anyone mentioned that by the 3rd inning every Cubs player, including Wells, had at least 1 hit? This has got to be extremely, extremely rare. edit: I have box score reading comprehension issues, apparently.
  9. The scary part is, the Phillies still have the prospects to pull off the Halladay trade - if they wanted to. And they would have them both under their control for next year, too. I know there are other things to consider, but if "winning" is your #1 priority, then, well...... Game 1: Hamels Game 2: Halladay Game 3: Lee .........
  10. C'mon, do you guys really think I think McCutchen will be traded in 2 years? Half of this board is made up of people who recognize jokes (even bad ones), and the other half are people who take every written word as truth. I was making a tongue in cheek response to someone saying Pittsburgh is "headed in the right direction". As a life-long Pennsylvanian, basically, I will believe it when I see it. Pittsburgh hasn't had the kinds of drafts Tampa Bay did the past 6 years. Upton, Crawford, Longoria, Price, Young (turned in to Garza)... Thats a really solid base to start a team with (not even including Tim Beckham), and Pittsburgh doesn't come close to having a group like that.
  11. what have they done since cleaning house to make you think they're a brutal front office? trading sanchez is the right move for them, if they can get some value. he's 31 years old, doesn't have much power and his stats are very BABIP-dependent because he doesn't walk a lot. plus he might be in line to make $8M next season. agreed. I actually am a big fan of what the new GM has done for the pirates. It actually looks like they are going in the right direction, FINALLY. Right. It will be so awesome when we are all here in 2 years on a "McCutchen trade rumors" thread.
  12. My brother lives in Atlanta and goes to many games. He said that during one game, Escobar committed an error on a questionable play, or at least questionable in Yunel's mind. After the scorer put the E-6 up, Escobar was yelling and pointing up at the booth. For most of the rest of the inning, he stood at SS with his legs spread very wide, in a lazy looking stance. I guess his act has worn thin on Bobby and Chipper.
  13. Fixed. I figured everyone assumed the media was a large part of "the baseball world". Silly me.
  14. Last year we sent 8. This year, who will represent us? Theriot?
  15. It is kind of strange how the baseball world treats Manny and ARod compared to Sosa and Bonds.
  16. Didn't Patton come from the Rockies? Wherever he came from I can see an organization getting upset at losing him as he has decent stuff. I wonder if the Rockies got a Cubs farmhand in the Rule5 draft recently and this was payback. That is completely a guess and I doubt it's at all true or close to reality, but that is the only reason that I can come up with to explain the Patton scenario and - yes it does feel like they are willing to sacrifice the pen this year to do whatever they can to keep Patton around for the full year. Yes, it is common for major league front offices to award roster spots based on "revenge". The only reason I can come up with is that the people running the Cubs are underqualified for the positions.
  17. With the rumors of Cushing and Matthews testing positive for steroids starting to circulate, I just wanted to pay myself on the back for mentioning my suspicions in Round 1. Cushing is nothing but a product of the juice. No doubt some team will still draft him, but he will be wasted money. Write it down.
  18. making the NIT was totally better than making the big dance and either losing in the first or, if an upset, the second round. i know the NIT gets dumped on a lot, but there are 344 d-i teams and penn st and baylor are better than at least the teams that didn't make the ncaa tourney plus at least most of the teams seeded 13 and higher. that's like 50th out of 344 - the equivalent of something like the peach bowl in ncaa football. congrats to cornley and "i beat off in the library" pringle and "i busted my face open" morrissey. Nice post, Truffle "i am not really funny so don't expect my jokes to be either" Shuffle. :?
  19. Don't worry, you didn't miss anything. As soon as the clock hit "00:00" ESPN went right to the 3pt/dunk contest. They didn't spend any extra time on postgame.
  20. Big Ten Championship + Rose Bowl, NIT Championship, and Cubs World Series. I can handle it. I deserve it.
  21. If he cares about the milestone and winning and not about money, then I can see a 1 year deal with Tampa Bay. But its Gary Sheffield here, why would he ever take less than what he thinks he's worth?
  22. The Bills have filled needs at DE, TE, and WR (with T.O.). Their next need is at Center. They decide to take 2008 Rimington Trophey winner A.Q. Shipley out of Penn State. The only thing going against him is his height (6'). He'd be the total package if he were 3 or 4 inches taller. Bills take him before Pittsburgh has the chance to keep him at home.
  23. This. And bitter about the way that Pie's time here ended up. People knew that his trade value was diminished, but going from "untouchable" to a trade for neither Brian Roberts or Jake Peavey is an awful taste. I think people, for the most part, give Hendry credit when he does something well. People praised him for the, Ramirez, Lee, Nomar, Harden trades, and came around to the Edmonds/Johnson acquisitions when they proved to be great moves. I think fans turn on him quickly now sometimes because he has a high payroll and can't quite get it right all the time to get a team to the WS. The bad moves gets magnified because of frustration.
  24. edit: didn't realize a pick wasn't made in that post...
  25. Yes, pick one. I'd like to make it to my pick before I leave the office and miss it.
