  1. Whats his deal/upside? He had a good AFL, but how soon can we expect him in the bigs, if at all? And with Castro at short - does Castro or Lake become 3B options? Thanks.
  2. The first one that popped into my head was Beckett for Hanley and Anibal Sanchez. Brock for Broglio
  3. hmm, i'll reserve judgement until it's actually there. not sure It could be really cool or really bad. Very profound statement.
  4. Yonder Alonso tried it at Cincy and it was a circus. Rizzo could be similar. Rizzo better be a good defensive 1B otherwise he's just a DH.
  5. With this transaction, where are we at on the 40 man?
  6. so who'd we get for garza, fill me in please. I'm getting ahead of myself. It appears a trade is imminent...just forecasting.
  7. So now we are at Dempster (3), Wood (3), Volstad (4), Wells (5). Good god.
  8. Lowering ticket prices? Good luck with that. That'll never happen and if it does, the decrease will be minimal, at best.
  9. Other than being younger, whats the difference between Rizzo and LaHair? Is Rizzo really supposed to be that good?
  10. Seeing recent moves like signing Sonnanstine also signal that we're not players for guys like Jackson. If its truly gonna be Dempster (3), Z (3), Wells (5) and Wood (5) - lets hope we pick up some innings eater rather than what happended last year. Guys like Coleman - I hope to never see again.
  11. With Garza talks heating up - I gotta believe Z's coming back for sure, otherwise we're screwed harder than I thought.
  12. I've mentioned this scenario a couple of times. Personally, I'd do whatever it took to get Turner and Porcello. If there's a 3rd piece, I don't care whether it's Oliver, Smyly, or Crosby. The Tigers rotation of Verlander, Fister, Scherzer, and Porcello is pretty strong, certainly the top in their division by far. I really don't think that they have any urgency to mortage the future for another front end guy, especially if they might have to prepare for life after Verlander and Cabrera in 3 years. If anything they might be looking for mid-back end options. Garza will probably be a trade deadline guy for many of these teams looking to get over the hump (provided we suck at the time), rather than an offseason move.
  13. The bolded makes me really not want Crisp. Agreed. 3 years for this 32 yr old? No thanks.
  14. Did you read the 10 posts on this picture? A simple "Yes" would have required fewer keystrokes. And actually, you know, helped. If I did that, he wouldn't learn nothing. I look forward to learning more from you, Jedi master. Asking you to read a 3-page thread before posting a question that was answered in a 5+ post discussion is a Jedi mind trick? I missed it in the NSBB by-laws that appointed you "post response time etiquette". Move on...

  16. Is that Kent Tukulve on the mound? He was awesome.
  17. Didn't we have Maholm a couple of years ago? Oh, my mistake - that was T Gorzelanny.
  18. I'd bet you're overestimating the marketing value by a factor of 10, easily. Probably even more. First, merchandizing revenue is split evenly by all 30 teams. The Cubs would make the most money on Darvish jersey sales if he signs with the Yankees Second, the Cubs don't own the television rights in Japan, so they can't sell something they don't own. If a bunch of Japanese folks start watching Cubs games, they'll do so online, via the Japanese version of MLB.TV. Any revenue generated for MLBAM would also be shared equally by the 30 teams. "We'll offset so-and-so's salary with marketing revenue" is by and large a huge fallacy. The Cubs don't have far to go to measure the impact of a Japanese start - the numbers are fresh from the Fukudome era. Theo & Co. can refer to their experience with the Matz financials. Whatever the decision is (pursue him or not), the breakeven point in terms of dollars by the Cubs will be quick.
  19. FWIW...I think Counsell was a hitting instructor with Ron Coomer's operation on the southside a few years ago.
  20. Didn't Ian Stewart sing "Year of the Cat"?
  21. I'll take Starting Pitching (3 #2's please), Defense and OBP...in that order.
  22. Mainly b/c ownership may realize what a bad PR move this will be. The WS win only underscores the importance of AP in the line up, team player, community, etc... He's a future HOF'er and the modern day Gehrig. Also, whats the market for him? Looking at the list of top payrolls (ranging approx. from $118M - $200M) - the 2 NY teams, Boston, us, White Sox, Phillies, Tigers, LA Angels - there is either no need for a 1B or the no appetite to increase payroll. The next tier of team payrolls begin at $90M and of those teams - who would increase payroll 28% for a period of 8 years? (assuming he signs in the neighborhood of $25M/year).
  23. Prior to the WS this year, my hope was that StL would lose. Then sign AP in the offseason for an amount and time frame that would cripple them for the second half of his contract and ultimately, make them go away for 5 years. I now believe StL will be able to re-sign him at a relatively priced contract - similar to their offer before ST. With Wainwright coming back, Jaime Garcia, Shelby Miller coming up and bringing back AP (with Holliday under contract), the Cards aren't going away any time soon - which puts my visits with the in-laws for Christmas in StL a painful experience for years to come.
  24. What is your position on trading away a fan favorite player on the downside of his career?
