  1. Sorry, let me rephrase. What is Donnie's Peavy rumor. Players involved etc.
  2. Please summarize Donnie's story for us please.
  3. I read some where (I think J. Mayo article) that Ceda has put on some soft weight recently. Maybe the Cubs question is work ethic and his ability to control his weight.
  4. Found this posted at eastwindupchronicle.com Couple of New Korean Cubs November 3rd, 2008 Shinsano · 1 Comment We (as in the Cubs, not EWC) signed a couple of Korean players recently. I didn’t want to write about them until the contracts had been approved by MLB. Writing a post referencing something about a Korean signing with another team, and reported in the the Korean media is a bit different from writing about Cubs information not yet reported anywhere. Please understand going forward. The first is Ha Jae-hoon, who played for Yongma High School in Masan and is originally from Jinju, a small city with one of the best lantern festivals you could ever hope to find. Ha is listed as 6′1 and 185 lbs. on his high school roster and Cubs contract, but he’s bigger than that. He projects as a centerfielder, even though he’s mostly played catcher in high school. And that’s the key with Ha. He can play anywhere. He’s a solid catcher defensively, but his body doesn’t quite project as one at the MLB level. There was some talk of moving him to 2B, and pairing him with Lee Hak-ju, but in the end he’s looking more like an outfielder going forward. Ha is pretty quick, and runs about 4.2/4.3 to first. He’s full tilt all the time and has fantastic baseball instincts. A “baseball player” if you will. He gets the bat through the zone and I’ve seen him drive the ball to all fields with power. At the high school level in Korea he’s in the upper tier in terms of power, but he’ll have to get stronger once he gets to the U.S. I don’t doubt he will. He’s already told me a couple times he’s looking forward to getting to the team complex in Arizona so he can start working out. Ha has a great attitude and was his team’s leader at Yongma. The other player is a right-handed pitcher, Jung Soo-min, who went to Busan High School, the same school Choo Shin-soo went to, and also Ahn Tae-kyeong a pitcher the Rangers signed this past summer. Jung is listed as 6′0 and 192 lbs., but again, he’s bigger than that. Probably 6′2 right now. Like Ha, has very good makeup. He’s a bit of a late bloomer, and was actually behind Ahn on the Busan H.S. depth chart going into 2008. However, by the end of the season he was clearly the go to arm on the team. His fastball at the beginning of 2008 was reportedly 84-85. When I saw him in August it was usually around 86-87 and touching 88. Jung went to Arizona in September for instructional (not the AZL) and after working with coaches there for a couple weeks, is already touching 92. As opposed to Ha, who I’d mentioned is kind of a fiery team leader, Jung is quiet and focused. I’ve spent quite a bit of time with both over the past few months (they were already friends prior to the Cubs approaching them) and can say they’re both great kids who will work very hard once they get to Arizona next Jan./Feb. Tags: Baseball · East Prospect Watch 1 response so far ↓ * 1 Nathan // Nov 4, 2008 at 4:29 am Thanks, Shinsano! Do you have bonus figures for either of these two prospects? I’m wondering if either of them is considered a bigger get financially than Lee Hak-Ju or Rhee Dae-Eun. As a Cubs fan, it’s so exciting seeming them signing a lot of amateur talent in Asia and Australia.
  5. I bet they start him in the rotation at Daytona next year and try to build up his innings to the 140-160 range. That way he can work on his control and secondary stuff. If he is throwing well and they need bullpen help late in the year he could get a call. More realistically you could see him in 2010 battling for a bullpen job. If he improves his control he has Joba type stuff.
  6. I saw that BA has a write up about the NL central 2008 drafts. If anyone can summarize the Cub information it would be greatly appreciated.
  7. Wow, I find that kind of surprising. I guess they plan on stretching Marshall back out over a couple starts and like Gallagher as the long man in the pen. Bruce there are rumors the Pads may dump Edmunds. Do you think the Cubs have an interest so they could move Fukudome up into the 2 spot?
  8. Johnson can play center, Murt can not play left very well.
  9. Matt Murton has perfected the swinging bunt!! You got to make room on the roster for that skill set! If they bring up Patterson it just gives them more flexibility. They have Johnson who can play left and they obviously feel Dero and Fontenot are better hitters than the Big Murt. Well at least they both have more power.
  10. Someone please tell MLBtv the game is on Comcast not wgn!!!
  11. Dang MLBtv thought the game was on WGN so all I am watching is the Cosby show. The brain trust goes to Japan and the morons are running the show.
  12. Inge playing shortstop for the Tigers today and has made a nice play or two.
  13. It wouldn't surprise me if Lou told him to work things out in the minors at the beginning of the season and go with some combo of Dempster, Marquis, Marshall and Lieber. Especially if his side throwing hasn't been much better. Lou wants to get off to a good start and letting Hill work out the kinks on the big club wouldn't be a good idea.
  14. Until Spring training games starts is there any college games you can watch over the internet? Please post if you know any games being broadcast. Thanks
  15. In the Jim Callis quote, I imagine he met to type that the Orioles could get more for Bedard (not Roberts) Bedard isn't going to cost a new team 110-150 million right out of the gate. So they can demand better prospects.
  16. While I would prefer Figgins, I suspect the Angels would be more inclined to dump Mathew's Jr. for very little and throw in some cash.
  17. If the players reported are correct, I bet AM has to clear some roster space. This might be where the third team comes in.
  18. Gallagher, Murton and Patterson for Roberts. The Cubs probably had to wait until Fukudome passed the physical. I can not see them announcing a deal today, because this is Fukudome's day in the sun. Hopefully, it will be announced tomorrow, otherwise I bet it would wait until after the holiday. I like the deal, now lets go get a top of the order pitcher!!
  19. Is Cedeno going to be the O's new shortstop? Who do they have that can play short now? I don't think we have any room for Luke Scott. If the Cubs move Cedeno, Gallager and someone else to net Roberts, who is the back up shortstop for the Cubs?
  20. So if we acquired him, we'd have to fly his wife out to Toronto 8 times a year? Do you think we could set up a car pool with A-Rods blonde stripper?
  21. 25 starts by Burnett and 7 by Hart would produce more quality starts then 32 Marquis starts. Plus it would save my liver from the Ibuprofin induced toxicity. But, if the Cubs and Jays were involved in a deal, I put money on Dempster in the deal not Marquis. I remember reading something that Toronto ownership would like to have a couple Canadians on the roster, plus Dempster gives the Jays more financial flexibility. Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Dempster have 2 years left at about 5 million/year. Marquis has something like 2 years at about 8/year. Did Burnett sign like a 5 year 55million deal?
  22. A little snippet from Will Carrol chat today. Pat (Chicago): Who starts next year in Right Field for the Cubs? Will Carroll: Fukudome is probably the top option, with some sort of Murton/X platoon as the second option. jbacow (NYC): Are there any baseball related health issues for Lester? (And what will Bucholz grade out next year on the THR?) Will Carroll: Not that I'm aware of on Lester - it's one of the things I've been trying to run down. Buchholz -- guessing he's yellow on age. BREAKING -- looks like Fukudome will decide today. Someone made a big offer. My guess? Cubs. Dave (Indy): Will - you picked a great day to be out of town. You know what it the "first snow" is like in Indy, even if it was only a few inches. Lots of rumors about Indians trying to get Jason Bay. How much of Bay's fall off in 2007 would be due to injuries? Are those injuries that we should expect to continue to hamper Bay in the future? Thanks Any confirmation of this?
  23. Hendry was just being kind, do you really think he is going to say "I wish Matt was left handed, better defensively, had a strong arm and could actually hit the cut off man, cut down on his swinging bunts and actually drive the ball into the gap or into the seats." oh yea, "and catch fly balls."
  24. I saw that on Wednesday Pie went 2/4 with a homerun. No K's. It appears he has started to figure some things out over the last 1-2 weeks. Hopefully his swing changes are starting to show results. Is there any video of his play in winter ball? Does MLBtv show any of these games?
