  1. Yeah, I heard the same thing. Jesse Rogers said Trachsel was just giving the reporters a hard time and was laughing when he did it. He said he also asked them if they had a deadline or something to worry about. He said it was pretty clear to him that Trachsel was playing around with them and he was surprised at the reaction to it. That's what you get for listening. Trachsel clearly was not laughing or joking. No, it wasn't all that big a deal, but it was totally uncalled for, unprofessional, and Lou and the coaches were not amused. The clubhouse has been a pretty nice place this year, and I'm sure Lou feels they don't need a sourpuss like Trachsel ruining things. (And Cubs players were watching the game.) Well then, I hate to hear that. Thanks for clearing it up.

  3. Not really. Patterson was called up during the minor league season, so he lost development time by sitting on the bench in Chicago. By the time Smardz is called up the minor league season will be over, so he won't be missing out on any development time. The Cubs are likely to call up all the guys that have already gotten the call this year: Ohman, Petrick, Gallagher, Cherry, Cotts and Rapada (in approx. that order) Soto, Fox and Patterson That's already a lot of players. If they do call him up I doubt he gets more than one appearance, maybe 2 if the race is over and its the last day of the season. That's probably not going to hurt him nor will it help him very much. They should call up all of them, but Piniella made it sound like there'll only be a few additions to the roster. I don't know why, unless it's an order from the higher ups to not spend too much on September call ups like the Expos in '03. If we only bring up 3 pitchers and Samardzija is one of them, it's just a horrible, horrible idea. I think, in theory, it makes a lot of sense to call up quite a few guys because there seems to be such little downside to doing so. However, I think the reason so many, if not all teams call up so few guys is because the extra numbers can be disruptive. The already crowded clubhouse (especially at Wrigley) would become even more crowded. The bullpen and dugout would become very crowded. I think the slight chance that you may need to use 33 players in a game is outwighed by the daily disruption to workplace comfort. Most teams, especially in a pennant race, don't want to change things too much.
  4. Kudos to whoever did it.
  5. That is better than outstanding! Post of the year!
  6. I agree Vance was the best today. I was going to vote for him anyway, but now I don't feel dirty about it! I think the elderly lady will be his main competition today because of the sentiment she will generate. Good luck, Vance!
  7. What position players have the Cubs given up on that became great for someone else? Maybe I am forgetting someone that is obvious, but the last young position player I can remember being traded by the Cubs who then went on to have a good career is Joe Carter. That trade worked out fine for us. Rafael Palmeiro says "hiya." Oh yes. I thought there was someone I might be forgetting. He certainly qualifies. That trade didn't turn out as well as the Carter trade, but it did help lead us to the NLCS.

  9. Actually, I believe the next batter popped up to Carmen Fanzone at second base.
  10. I worked for three seasons for the old Reno Silver Sox in the California League. Moana Stadium was a dump. Glad they are getting a new stadium and a new team. Ren is a great city. But, it will have some of the worst weather in professional baseball the first half of the season and some of the best weather in beaseball the second half of the season.
  11. Maybe they are moving Barrett to the rotation but they don't want him to say anything until it is official.
  12. Jake, Our mutual friends, Paul and Gail Wilson, had you autograph a couple of baseballs for my sons last year. I just wanted to say thanks and good luck!
  13. I wish the Cubs would bring the blue and gold Cub head back to the sleeves like the one they used in the 60's and early 70's. If I recall correctly, Herman Franks had it changed because it didn't look mean enough.
  14. I didn't mind the blues as alternates, but they were worn so often--both at home and on the road--that the regular road and home jerseys became like alternate jerseys. As such, I started to hate the blues and was probably more giddy than I should have been when I read they were gone.
  15. aping = mimicking acromegaly is more commonly referred to as gigantism. I guess that biology degree is paying off for me, eh. Smarty pants. :)
  16. That is interesting. It would be even more interesting if I knew what "aping the symptoms of the glandular disorder acromegaly" meant.
  17. Every time I see the title of this thread, I think it says Porno idea. Perhaps that is why I've clicked into it about nine times already.
  18. I agree it seems like it should be a fairly easy decision one way or the other, but Matz's team got $51 million from the Red Sox and they still took the entire amount of time to decide (or at least make it official). So, for whatever reason, the teams don't seem to announce right away whether they've accpeted the bid.
  19. I guess thats over? I don't think it is saying they won the bidding, just what their reported bid is and what impact it would have on them if they are the winners.
  20. I believe Ben Maller is the overnight guy on Fox Radio.
  21. I too would like to see this happen, BUT, isn't the source of the 3/45 deal simply a poster on another message board? Also, how many pitchers are actually making $15 million a year? I ask as a way to help me determine if this rumor is even reasonable.
  22. Here is an example of what I am talking about. This is from Bruce's Q & A session:
  23. If I'm not mistaken, Bruce Miles has been pretty blunt in here about his dislike of the guy's personality.
