  1. What did he have, 5 or 6 no hitters? 7 no-no's. Forgot to add that. When you think of Nolan Ryan you think of one of the most dominating pitchers of all time, and it's a shock to see that he's never had a Cy Young award. He could certainly be dominant, but he also had 292 losses and 2,795 walks in his career. He finished most seasons right around .500.
  2. I saw this article a couple of days ago and was totally confused by it. It says not to discount the chance of the Cubs going for him if they can get the Dodgers to take back some of the guys the Cubs owe a lot of money too. Why would the Dodgers acquire some of the Cubs big salaries just so the Cubs can sign one of the Dodgers big free agents? Jim Hendry: "Hi, Ned. Listen, we want to sign Manny away from you, but to do that we're going to need to get creative. We need to figure out a way for you to acquire a couple of our big contracts so we have the flexibility to sign him. I think if you take Soriano and Fukudome we can get the deal done." Ned Coletti: stunned silence. JH: "Listen, if you are going to drive a hard bargain I'll let you take on Derrek Lee's contract too." NC: Hangs up phone.
  3. I couldn't agree more. Eric Karos would be a nice choice. I could go for Sutcliffe too, but I don't think he would be available because of ESPN and not wanting to do 162 games a year.
  4. I remember that great game he pitched shortly after his father died. I think it was in San Francisco. It happened shortly after the death of my father and really touched me.
  5. I'm ambivalent about Obama. Just think the impression stinks.
  6. I agree. I think it is probably the worst political impression they've ever done. I don't even think he has his cadence or mannerisms down. But, others disagree, so he must be doing something right (though I don't see it). I thought the bit was very funny (including the Cubs part). Bill Murray being part of made it seem fun and not mean spirited. I thought the look on his face when they were saying the Cubs would never win was priceless.
  7. I ruled out Caverretta pretty early since he was only 19 years old in 1936 (the last year for those uni's. The guy in that photo is most certainly older than that. I'm liking the Jakie May likeness. Yeah, May was about to turn 37 his second year with the Cubs, so that fits the profile too. Just think, 70 years from now a group of Cubs fans may try to identify a picture of Mark Guthrie.
  8. Yeah, that's the same pic I saw that made him my top choice.
  9. Here are the lefty throwers from 1927-1936: 1927: Jim Brillheart Charlie Grimm Ckiff Heathcote Percy Jones Art Nehf Lefty Weinert 1928: Grimm Heathcote Jones Joe Kelly Nehf Weinert 1929: Mike Cvengros Grimm Heathcote Nehf 1930: Grimm Heathcote Mal Moss Jesse Petty Bud Teachout 1931: Grimm Jakie May Les Sweetland 1932: Grimm Marv Gudat May Harry Taylor Carroll Yerkes 1933: Dolph Camilli Grimm Roy Henshaw Babe Herman Beryl Richmond Yerkes 1934: Camilli Phil Cavarretta Grimm Herman Don Hurst Roy Joiner Charlie Wiedemeyer 1935: Cavarretta Larry French Grimm Henshaw Joiner Clyde Shoun 1936: Cavarretta French Grimm Henshaw Shoun Based on all of that, I am going to guess at this point that it is Phil Cavarretta. EDIT: Now that I look at the picture again, I don't think it is Cavarretta. After a quick Google Image search, I am going to say it is either Heathcote, Nehf, Herman, or (and this is my top choice) Jakie May.
  10. It's really stupid. The Cubs have a huge national fanbase - larger than almost any other team - and yet, they show Z's no-hitter each time on Chicago-only television. If they had shown the original game on WGN America and the replay on Chicago-only, that'd make much more sense. This is completely illogical, though. Especially with the utter crap they play on WGN America otherwise. Of course, it has no effect on me. I'll be covering high school games at the time anyway. ESPN wouldn't allow them to show it on WGN America Sunday night. I would think they could show the replay on the Superstation though.
  11. I thought the piece was outstanding. I liked it in the opening video when they say we wait for our parents..for their parents...and that our kids will wait for us. I also liked how the brain researcher said if we let out emotions control us we'd say "let's run onto the field and beat the hell out of those guys!" I think we can all relate. Finally, that Wrigley Fields is a cute little kid. Oh, one more thing, count me among the fans who thinks about 5 seconds of Ronnie Woo-Woo is enough.
  12. And replace him with? Soriano You can't do that. He'd hop on every throw to first and every runner would be safe. Bob's idea is intriguing and Jeff's response made me laugh.
  13. I wish they'd bring back that Cub head sleeve patch. I love that, and obviously a lot of other fans do too with the amount of shirts and caps that are sold with it on them. Herman Franks got rid of that patch around 1978 or so because he didn't think it looked mean enough. Time to bring it back.
  14. I agree with everything here. So, now we are up to $.04. Also, to the different posters talking about names on the back of the uniforms, I believe that is something the Cubs have done for only the last decade or so. I'm ambivalent either way about the names, but it is a rather recent thing for them to do.
  15. I like the pinstripes too, and would like to keep them. But, I don't hate the idea of an all-white home uniform. Plus, the Cubs have had home uniforms without pin stripes many times in their history, so it isn't like the Yankees dropping the pin stripes for the first time. But, instead of replacing the current regular home uniform, why not replace the home alternate blue tops with a white one? In fact, I would make it an alternate uniform so the pants make sense with the top (unlike the blue tops with the white blue-striped pants like we have now). I'd also make sure (in my perfect world) they were actually alternate uniforms and not overworn. Instead of letting the starting pitcher use, I would only allow them on Sundays, or something like that.
  16. I suspect it was HGH in the shipment--and I know that is what is being reported--but how could it be proved it was a shipment of HGH? I'm sure it doesn't say "FRAGILE: HGH vials" on the label.
  17. I really liked it too. My kids, who are 11 and 8, were ticked off when they went back to the regular way. I wouldn't have minded black and white and old graphics for the whole game, but nine innings of the old camera angles would have been tough (though two innings were fine).
  18. I don't care if Hendry has to give up: a) Our entire minor league system b) The Chicago 2016 Olympics bid c) My 401(k) savings if it results in a World Series championship for the Cubs this year! I'd even be willing to throw in the 401(k) savings of JonnyRed's wife!
  19. We can argue all day whether or not he should have stayed in or not, but to try and make the case that Hill isn't having that bad of a year . . . and use last night's lone ER as proof, is not remotely productive. We might as well compliment him on his spectacular 1.5 K/IP from last night Don't forget, he was also throwing a no-hitter last night. (My first opportunity to use the green sarcasm color)
  20. '85 started off very well but injuries destroyed the season. All five starting pitchers were on the disabled list at the same time.
  21. Warner Wolf, a longtime NY area sports guy on the news, and ESPN 1050 personality, recently told the story, I believe, about the first time a team (probably Yankees) used numbers. They stuck to the number of their position or batting order, can't remember. I think it was in the 20's. Batting order, which is why Ruth was 3 and Gerhig 4.
  22. FWIW, I did see Bruce Kison at the game today, so the O's are still scouting the Cubs.
  23. I'm using my phone to post this, so I can't provide the link, but the Washington Post says Lopez played second base yesterday. My guess is the Cubs are interested in him for second and not short, even though I know that makes no sense.
  24. Let's hope so. I'll even take Pie is going to be a SOLID player! He'll be solid and then progress to fantastic. I have confidence in Pie producing. The key is playing time and this year is the year for him to get that. Meph disagrees. who's Meph? oh, right, the nsbblol blogger... Really? Yes, really. When was this figured out? I wouldnt have guessed it , particularly given the rant on Meph himself. If so, he loses serious credibility. Because while some of it is fair, most of it is just crass. Where would one find this infamous blog?
