  1. Alex Gonzalez of the Boston Red Sox formerly of the the Marlins is rumored to be (per rotoworld): Now this brings up the question who is better Izturis or Gonzalez?
  2. My gut says Hendry wants Cotts as a starter next year. He is probably, in Hendry's eyes, a gamble worth taking seeing how expensive pitching is this year. However, what I am hoping is that Hendry will use the addition of Cotts to trade Eyre and JJ for either Jake Westbrook or Jason Jennings. In each case the Cubs picking up some money. I think this way will give us a better chance of improving the rotation.
  3. I've been trying to scramble my brain to come up with some starting pitchers that we could trade for, since it looks like the other Free Agent starters either want to stay on the west coast or their asking price is too high. With the realization that Hendry can only sign two more type AB free agents I think he must seriously be looking to get some pitching via trade. I've come up with a short list of possibilities and I'm just wondering if any of them are realistic and if anyone knows if Hendry is looking at them. Bonderman, Bedard, Cliff Lee, Westbrook, Freddy Garcia, Javier Vazquez, Jon Garland, Tim Hudson, Chris Young, and Jason Jennings. Sorry if something like this is already up, I didn't see one. If nothing is up I'd like to use this one as a way to keep track of all the available pitchers.
  4. It's probably way too early in the offseason to be making those predictions. Will the Cubs have Drew or Soriano. Will they have Tejada or Carl Crawford? Will they have A-Rod or Burrell? I don't even think you can really pencil DeRosa anywhere into the line up, let alone what spot in the batting order, until the offseason unfolds. I understand that. I was just wondering in and ideal world where he would fit. Like where do his career stats point to him being most effective. Last year he batted mostly 5th and 6th. Which I think is absolutely ridiculous.
  5. So is Derosa going to be batting second or will he bat 7 or 8? I am a bit confused on where he fits in the lineup.
  6. I just saw this since I've been gone preparing for my new job tomorrow and I can't believe it. Derosa would be a great utility player or platoon partner for Jones but I just don't think he has a right starting everyday at 2b. We already had Theriot who is basically the exact same thing and doesn't cost 4 million a year. I have a few questions which i'm hoping someone can answer for me. First, does this mean we are no longer looking into signing Julio Lugo? Second, what does this mean for Theriot? Third, is Cedeno definitely gone now? Fourth, where will Derosa bat in the lineup? Lastly, do we know of what other teams were offering him? Sorry if some of this has alreayd been asked I didn't feel like reading the entire thread.
  7. I'd be severly upset if the Cubs traded Murton. It would be nice to get good production for league minimum out of at least one position on the field. I don't want to trade Murton at all but we all have to agree that right now he probably has the most value. If we trade him for a top of the rotation starter, guys like Bonderman, Bedard, Ervin Santanna, Chris Young, I'd have to consider it. If we get Bedard and Carlos Lee I wouldn't complain, wouldn't be my first choice but I could understand the deal because it would significantly improve our ballclub next year. If the Cubs traded Murton and Wuertz for Westbrook and Michaels and was able to sign Soriano. The OF would not look too bad. Let's sign Soriano first... I think our standard package to start with should be something like Jones, Wuertz, and a mid level pitching prospect for one of those starters. With that you save more money to go and sign either Drew, Soriano, or Lee and Dave Roberts for center.
  8. I'd be severly upset if the Cubs traded Murton. It would be nice to get good production for league minimum out of at least one position on the field. I don't want to trade Murton at all but we all have to agree that right now he probably has the most value. If we trade him for a top of the rotation 2-3 starter, guys like Bonderman, Bedard, Ervin Santanna, Chris Young and Jake Westbrook, I'd have to consider it. If we get Bedard and Carlos Lee I wouldn't complain, wouldn't be my first choice but I could understand the reason for making the deal because it would significantly improve our ballclub next year.
  9. I agree and here's something far fetched to think about. On Baseball this Morning on XM the jeniuses there were advocating signing Soriano to play left because I quote Orestes Destrada (loosely) " Matt Murton after a hot first month was a disapointment the rest of the season so I would play Soriano in left and play this kid, this great kid the Cubs have Angel Pagan in centerfield" it's good to know that you don't ever have to do research or have facts to be paid to share your opinion on things I really hope they didn't say that. That is quite the embarassment.
  10. If I recall correctly Giles can play a decent CF. If that is the case I wouldn't mind seeing the Cubs trade for him if Drew falls through. Granted he wouldn't be my first choice, Drew, Wells, and Jones are all ahead of him, but I think we could do a lot worse. Giles batting second would definitely be a good thing.
  11. Actually 6/80 is less per year than the 5/73 the Philly's offered. So the deal hasn't gone up they just upped the years a bit to try to entice him.
  12. You're going to be surprised at what he'll get. The Angels were rumored to be going to offer Ramirez over 100 million. Teams will start raising the ante a million at a time. Soriano likely will sign a 6/96 deal and get a no-trade clause to boot. Well the 6/96 only adds another year onto what I was thinking at the same price so that isnt' that bad. Soriano will probably be horrible that last year, but who knows with guys staying productive till their late 30's early 40s now, he may still be producing.
  13. Soriano will probably get 5/80...I don't see how many teams can see him being worth more than a million more a year than Aramis. I can't see many teams getting in a true bidding war for him because I think most teams realize what everyone on this board has been saying. That he is not worth the money he is going ot get.
  14. Wow, that is absolutely ridiculous. I just cannot fathom paying that much for one unproven player in the MLB. they'll make it back and then some in t-shirt sales alone. If that is the case I don't understand why every team in the league didn't bid that much. Every team doesn't sell as many t-shirts as Boston. I think he meant T-shirt sales over in Japan. I don't think over there it matters too much what team he is on. If Boston has an effect in Japan I retract my earlier statement.
  15. Wow, that is absolutely ridiculous. I just cannot fathom paying that much for one unproven player in the MLB. they'll make it back and then some in t-shirt sales alone. If that is the case I don't understand why every team in the league didn't bid that much.
  16. One free agent signing will not set the tone. While your numbers are probably close to what these players will receive, what will really set the bar is how much teams are willing to pay for a player's services. If two big market teams are bidding back and forth, the money could go much higher. Furcal got way more than he deserved last year. That's because a team swooped in with a ridiculous offer to ensure that they were the team that landed him. You may be right but I have a feeling teams will start the bidding much lower than they would have now that they saw what Ramirez signed for. Hopefully, we won't get any of those outrageous contracts again this year. Furcal is clearly not worth 13 million a year.
  17. Wow, that is absolutely ridiculous. I just cannot fathom paying that much for one unproven player in the MLB.
  18. If you're trading Barrett, you have to use him to fill another hole (SS/2B/OF). Trading him and just getting back prospects, isn't worth it (unless you can spin those prospects to a team like the Marlins to get Cabrera). They way I figure it by trading away Barrett and Izturis it opens up the door to more realistically signing Julio Lugo to play SS. Then we can sign Greg Zaun or Bengie Molina to play Catcher. You could possibly then use some of the prospects recieved in that deal to trade for Tim Hudson. edit: the reason I say prospects is because Izturis brings down Barretts value quite a bit in my eye. But getting rid of Izturis is an imperative and the only way to do it is probably by packaging him with Barrett.
  19. I'd look into trading Barrett and Izturis to the Blue Jays. I'd take a few prospects for them. Getting rid of Izturis would be huge.
  20. Trading Hill will create another hole in the rotation. It looks like we don't have much of a chance for Schmidt, Zito, or Matsuzaka, so we would need to overpay for the likes of Vicente Padilla and Ted Lilly just to fill our #2 and #3 spots. I don't really like that idea. I don't see them giving up ARod for just prospects either, so I don't really see it happening. In the GM Meetings thread, Hoops said a source of his said the Yanks were interested in Barrett. Prior, Marshall, Barrett, Eyre and Moore for ARod. If you get ARod, you could live with Blanco as the starting catcher. Hughes for Barrett. I could live with that. :D I second that.
  21. Hendry set the tone for all major free agents this offseason. After this Aramis deal there is no chance Soriano, Lee, or Drew will get much more than 16 mil a year. All other gms should be thankful to JH. My predictions for the other 3...Soriano 5/80, Drew 4/52, Lee 5/65. When it comes to the Free agent pitchers that is a completely different story. Those prices will be astronomical with guys like Lilly and Padilla making 7-8 mil a year. Hendry has kept the status quo which is always a plus. However, the way he has done it and the prices he has done it at is what makes his offseason so far pretty darn good. If he goes out and signs some of those "good" pitchers on the market to deals of 7-8 million his good work here will be negated.
