  1. Why not work out a three way deal with Rockies and the D-rays. Carl Crawford and Rocco Baldelli are both available. Crawford is a lefty so he would be ideal. Baldelli maybe easier ot get however. We know the D-rays want a veteran starting pitcher for either of them. So we trade Marmol and Jones to the Rockies, Cubs get Crawford/Baldelli, and the D-rays get Jennings. Just wanted to put my thoughts down.
  2. The more I think about this the more I like the deal. Jones is replacable. Jones and Marmol/Guzman for Jennings maybe not be teh best deal for the Cubs, but when we take into account who we can easily sign to replace Jones. Lofton and Cliff Floyd. Lofton would start in CF and Floyd would play against really tough RHs in place of Murton. Floyd would get about 15 starts in LF, 5 at 1b, and then 5 in RF. IT is a very acceptable transaction and would definitely make us better next year.
  3. I honestly don't see any reason to trade Jones at this point in time. I really think we need him in our lineup. We need his lefthanded bat. The only way I trade him is if he is part of a deal to get a quality starting pitcher.
  4. thats gotta be depressing...
  5. Vincente Padilla when he signs.
  6. Why don't we try to get Maddux and Glavine in a package deal. Both two year deals. Maddux 2/15 and Glavine 2/18. Of course, there is no chance that would ever happen. I'd just rather pay a Maddux or Glavine that kind of money than 4/36 for guys like Suppan, Padilla and Lily.
  7. Maddux will get a 2/18. Meche, Lilly, Padilla, etc with all get 3 or 4 years at 8 or 9 mil a year. I'd rather have Maddux.
  8. Do we know if Soriano made any changes to his approach last year?
  9. In that case, lets get this boy on some HGH. WOO UNPROVEN ACCUSATIONS FOR EVERYONE! I can't find the actual career stats for Sosa prior to 1998 but go look for yourselves. Both players had their breakout years at the age of 30. Both were raw speed and power type players earlier in their careers. Both in their first big years began to walk a bit more. Soriano 67 walks and 16 IBB and Sosa 78 BB and 14 IBB.
  10. I was just thinking and Soriano right now reminds me a lot of Sosa prior to 1998. Look at the stats they were very similar players. I'm gonna find career averages for the both of them and post when i find them...for sosa prior to 1998.
  11. Its starting to look like its 8 years, no options. I'm lazy and dont want to post links, but there are articles on cubs.com and rotoworld. You're kidding I hope because that would be a pretty nasty deal then. Thats the vibe I'm getting. I've seen no mention of options years in the latest articles. I saw Mr. Miles roaming a few minutes ago, maybe he can shed some light. I don't think anyone right now really knows. Kaplan was talking about option years though on the radio when the deal was announced, and so were a few other voices, so its not like we are the only people speculating that here. What it could be though is that those 3 are vesting years based on plate appearances. I'm praying the last 3 are option years.
  12. Yeah I have to believe Soriano is worth 8 million more a year than Pierre. Granted Soriano's is 8 years but this does make me feel a bit better.
  13. I think the consensus here is Soriano is not worth the money he will be getting but he is an upgrade over what we had last year. It seems like this debate is just going to keep going in circles because both sides seem to agree. The people who like the signing like it because Soriano will improve the team, and think he will help the team enough now to offset how much he may hurt us in the future. The people who don't like it, think he will improve the team but think his contract is an albatross and will hinder us in the future. I think this move cannot be looked at simply based off of its own merit. We need to see what other players sign for and see what other pickups the Hendry makes this offseason. For all we know Drew may sign a 6/110 deal. no one ones. I look at this deal in the same light I saw the Derosa deal. Derosa at 3/13 seemed a bit high but now seeing that Alex Gonzalez got 3/14 the Derosa looks a lot better. Baseball is a sport that inorder to sign players you have to overpay for their services.
  14. If it is the 6 year deal with two option years it really isn't that bad. People fail to realize that we may only have him for 6 years. I agree, a gauranteed 8 year deal is bad, but if what the SCORE reported is true I can definitely accept this contract. No matter what you cannot say Soriano is not an upgrade, he does significantly improve this ballclub. I will not lie I would rather have spent the money on JD Drew and Lugo but oh well this is what the Cubs did. Why not be happy that the Cubs for once were willing to outspend to sign someone, and not complain that they paid too much.
  15. Bruce, Is there any chance you can clear up this contract with us. Is it 6 years with 2 option years or 8 years gauranteed?
  16. yeah i definitely like his move by the Rangers. They now have their new leadoff hitter to replace GMJR.
  17. QFT Agreed. If Hendry got that, he's having a hell of an off-season, DeRosa included. If it was 6 years with two option years it would probably be 6/102. With two option years at 17 mil. If it is 6/95 then he would have two option years at over 20 mil a season.
  18. Are you assuming it takes the same players to acquire each guy? Yeah I think the two deals would be pretty similar. Maybe not the exact same players because both of those teams have different needs but all the players will prolly be of teh same quality. Maybe for Hudson: Jones and Marshall.
  19. Let me pose this: Who would you prefer Tim Hudson or Jake Westbrook?
  20. I'd love to have Westbrook here but only at a certain price. There is no way I'd give up Murton for him. However, if we could trade Eyre and Jones for him I would love it. I'd even pick up 3/4 of Eyre's contract if it meant getting rid of Jones as well. Westrbook is nothing more than a 3-4. Frankly, I'd love it if he was on the Cubs because as of now we don't have a 4. We have a 1(Zambrano), 3(Hill), and a 5(Miller and Prior). Any of the available free agents are all in the same boat as Westbrook ability wise so I see no reason to sign one of them at 10 mil a year, Batista, Lilly, and Padilla.

  22. Here are the second half numbers for those three. Tell me who is who... BA, OBP, SLG, OPS 287, 357, 572, 939 319, 390, 522, 912 311, 358, 512, 870 Both Lee and Soriano will be 31 for the majority of the season and are probably reaching the end of their primes while Murton will be 25 all of next season and hasn't even reached his prime yet. I don't know how you can say it is a risk not worth taking that a 25 year old, like Murton, will be better than two 31 year olds. I also don't think Murton will be a monster like these guys in the homerun and RBI department but he brings other things to the table. I see Murton turning into a player that is much more similar to JD Drew than either Lee or Soriano. Lastly, if the Matt Murton we saw in the second half will be there for the next ten years I'll be very pleased. Heck, even if his OPS levels out at 850-875 I'll be very happy. But you have to believe that he will develop a little more power as he gets older.
  23. I was thinking about the 2/30 deal the Red Sox are supposedly offering and I caught myself wondering if after the 2008 season they will blow up this team. Manny's contract will be up, Schilling will be retired, Varitek will be old, and Ortiz will be old. It seems like they may be viewing as their window only having 2 more years then they need to have a major youth movement. Just an idea that popped in my head.
  24. Dunno, but I would do Murton for Westbrook straight up, especially if we ink Soriano and Drew as rumored. Only if Westbrook was locked up longterm. Even then, I'm not sure. It's probably fair, but I'm just really bias toward Murton. He's my fav. player. Besides, I don't think the Indians really want/need an outfielder. We really need to trade from our strength, which is bullpen pitching and even young arms. Yeah I am also not a big fan of trading Murton. I understand that you have to trade value for value but if Carlos Lee is gonna get atleast 5/70 then I dont' see how you would trade someone who put up better numbers than him for just an average starter. Especially when this players will only be making like 500k. It just makes no sense to me. Matt Murton .297 .365 .444 13 HR 62 RBI OPS-.809 Carlos Lee .300 .355 .540 37 HR 116RBI OPS-.895 Not sure that I'd call Matt Murton better than Carlos Lee. I believe Murton put up better numbers post allstar than CLee. Is it just me or doesn't seem CLee always tapers down during the 2nd half of the season? I could be wrong but for the past couple of years it seemed that way to me. Yes my mistake. I did mean post All-star break.
