  1. It's not like we signed him for 3/$13 or anything. We paid $1 mil and an extra $1 mil if he makes tons of starts. I still hold firm that the purpose of this signing was to have someone to fall back on when we are hopefully in the heat of a race near the end of the season. At worst we'll get a handful of good stars from him (instead of rusch/willams,ect. .) at best he could start 20 games and win more than half of them.
  2. You forget, at the end of 2004 he opted not to get the surgery, and just rest and recovery. But in at the end of 2005 he opted for the surgery which other pitchers like Morris had and bounced back. It is very realistic to assume we may get 2 MONTHS of quality starts from this guy in months like August/September when it can REALLY make a difference. Thumbs up on this signing. I hope you're right too TGB but it's not just the surgury but maybe he has been doing something wrong mechanically that caused this problem. Did he fix that too or was it because of another reason is why his shoulder was hurt. Also, I still don't think Morris has really bounced back from his surgury to the form he once had. We're only paying Miller $1mil. So all he has to do in my book, is give us some critical wins late in the year when (possibly) Wood is not pitching. If he gives us more, then color me very happy.

  4. Hey I love Lofton. But Lofton is not = to Pierre. You are NOT going to get 168 games out of Lofton. Maybe 100 if you are lucky. So we are screwed 68 games without a leadoff hitter. I'd rather have Huff than Jones obviously, but Lofton = Pierre is pretty overboard.
  5. I do not hate Neifi. Infact I like his spunk. He is always there at the pitcher when a huddle comes together. He really tries to help the team. Infact Dempster said at the convention when he first started closing and was in a tuff situation neifi pointed to his gold glove and told dempster to get the ball to him, Neifi then turned a double play and got out of the inning. . The problem is Dusty. Who does not seem to understand that we need OBP!!!! in front of Lee. When someone specifically asked him about OBP in front of Lee he avoided the question. He still seems content to put "speed" up there rather than Walker's or Murton's OBP. It's just crazy. I would be FINE with Neifi 2B and Cedeno SS but only if Neifi bats 8th. That just won't happen with our Manager.
  6. No one is saying that. Even your most cynical posters (JC, Goony, me, etc) all agree that it's still possible to contend, but Hendry's offseason moves made it more difficult to contend without luck, great health and regression from St Louis and Houston to make it happen. Additionally, all of those aforementioned posters point out that that's not a good plan to count on things you cannot control in order to contend with a top 5 payroll. It just sounded that way to me, sorry. I'll leave this thread, and stay away from threads with so much negativity in the future. Instead of looking at it as negativity, look at it as invested criticism. If we were all negative, we wouldn't watch. We're just expressing frustration that something we are all invested in emotionally/financially is letting us down. It's not something to avoid. It's something to discuss. Well I like the way Mike Murphy does it. It sounds funny. When I'm reading it all I do is cringe. Sorry. I always keep an optomistic approach and I look on Jone's bright side. Which is he COULD give us .280.

  8. I just want to say, let's throw in the towel. Let's give up now. Atleast if we did that I wouldn't have to read this constant moaning and ******* that the season is already over before it started.
  9. You like excuse making, undue credit taking, feel sorry for me type guys?
  10. Dusty also sounds like he's either making excuses all the time, talking "me, me, me", or trying to sell him self in an interview with things like. . . "If you look at my teams, my teams have always been good". . . "I felt really bad, I mean like worse than I ever felt before. I told me wife I mean, I was like really depressed. I never want to feel that way again" (He sounded like he was on a sofa). He also tries to take credit for Matt Murton. Like him sitting Murton out in CRITICAL situations which could have helped the Cubs win, was actually good for Murton. And it's all because of Dusty "slowly bringing him in", to attribute to Murton's success. I'm sorry but what I saw in Murton was NOT a kid that needed time off. He had a smart head on his shoulders and he was ready to play every day last year. Every time Dusty speaks he proves exactly why I despise him so much. .
  11. So you think the Cubs need "another speed guy" to pair with Pierre as well? Speed is overrated. Speed is completely worthless without other, more important aspects of the game in your repertoire. Speed is way down the list of necessary ingredients to be a good baseball player. Being an average runner is not a setback in the least. There are a ton of crappy ballplayer's whose speed has hypnotized baseball people into keeping them in the game long past their expiration dates. Speed is nice to have, and all else being equal you'd have to take the faster guy. But all else usually isn't equal, and often times dramatically outweighs the difference speed will make. I think CCF put it quite nicely. Now you respond and tell me why these are not GOOD things. . break a pitchers concentration on the mound... it increases defensive range... (getting to more balls for outs instead of hits) decrease hitting into double plays... put pressure on defenses causing errors...
  12. Just FIVE SECONDS after I posted this I searhced google for "cubs convention audio" and WGN's site was up I figured it was an old link or advertisement for the "live audio" but sure enough WGN JUST updated to include the convention audio. I know for a fact it wasn't there just an hour ago I just search. . So I thoght I'd post it incase anybody gets up late like I do, and missed all of saturday's interviews like I did. . . :D
  13. Since they don't seem to want to answer my email about it. I thought I'd ask here if anybody remembers how many days it took last year after the convention before the audio was posted on the wgnradio site?
  14. Do you think Hairston has it in him to be a good full time 2B this year? what do you mean? why wouldn't he? I never said he wouldn't. I would just like to hear people back Hairston because I actually like him as an option. But tell me why. I mean what are his year to year #'s? The last few years I don't see any that were for more than half a season. When was his last full year and what was his OBP that year?
  15. Do you think Hairston has it in him to be a good full time 2B this year?
  16. That's a very smart plan. But we don't have a true "thinking" manager.
  17. I don't value JHJ for his "base stealing" threat, I value him for his increased defensive range over walker, and his "speed". What I mean is that he could get from 1st to 3rd on a hit instead of 1st to 2nd like Walker more likely would do. When I looked at his 2004 OBP I wondered, why the heck did the O's get rid of him? Does anybody know WHY his OBP was so bad last year and so great the year before? His average OBP is just .330 something. I mean what injury is it that caused him to be worse at the plate in '05? Can he realistically post an OBP of over .350 this year? If so, I gotta go Hairston over Walker.
  18. I understand why someone would want Hairston over walker. Why do we need another speed guy? Cause speed is cool. (not the drug).
  19. That's not accurate at all. The cubs have done little to improve?? Improve from when? Spring last year or Fall last year. Because we are marginally better EITHER one you compare it to.
  20. Nomar's Mexican?
  21. Juan Pierre. . "I'm really happy to be a Cub". . "When I found out I called him and said, YES SIR! We're back together again" (to Derrick Lee) "I have to admit I have a Ryne Samburg Throwback jersey, and when I found out I tried it on, to see how I looked as a Cub. I looked pretty good, so. ." "If you walk in my house, there is a big picture of the Ivy, blowed up, with me there. ." I beleive alot of the players enjoy playing here and have said they do. Ryan Dempster said he loves playing here. Lee says there's nothing like the energy in Wrigely Feild. And some of them do and just never say it to the media. Okay, well you proved me wrong, but I'd still spcifically like to hear Prior say it. Yes you did you just weren't listening. .

  23. That's the way DUSTY would do it. But the way it SHOULD be done is. . . Pierre Walker Lee Ramirez Murton Jones Barret Cedeno
  24. Let's not all wet ourselves over Spears. He's a middle of the road AA guy. It's not like we got some top 100 prospect. His ceiling is probably Jerry Hairston's current production. Ok you can say his ceiling is Hairson's just as easily I can say his ceiling is Eckstein's. What's your point? Do you want to argue just because you LOVE to look pessimistically toward the Cubs no matter what happens? Or what. Please explain, I just don't get it. I'm happy we got ANYTHING for corey, and you wan't be put a damper on that, because?
  25. Well it looks like we actually got SOMETHING for corey patterson. And alot of people thought we had to literally give him away. . Well atleast we got a decent prospect. This spears kid looks pretty good. If he makes it with us great, otherwise he is another nice bargaining chip to someone who might be looking for a SS.
