  1. Who was saying that Astros don't have better playoff odds? The point is that the Cubs are still in a good position to make the playoffs and their odds can swing wildly back in their favor in very short order, and it's ridiculous that someone would be OK with them doing nothing to ideally better their chances of making it and advancing basically because better teams exist.
  2. tell that to the royals The Royals ran into a collapsing Oakland team and got a home game in that Wild Card. The Cubs are all but guaranteed to get a good Pittsburgh team in Pittsburgh. If they win that? St. Louis. So basically you think they should only make a move if they're leading the division and are the clear favorites against anyone they might face. Got it. They can make a move, it just dumb to trade more than you think you should just to make a move when the odds of you doing anything this year are slim at best. Who is saying they should make a move to just make a move? We want them to improve a competitive team to better their chances of making and advancing in the playoffs. I mean, these are the types of teams who are going to make moves to try and boost the team for a run. Why is a team sitting comfortably at the top of the division going to shell out for upgrades?
  3. That's overstating it. Even if he plays like he did in May (his April was good but not stellar), we're not talking about a huge WAR difference over the course of two months. It's just not a huge position of need. If he came with another year or two of control, that would be a much different story. Well, if he is back to hitting like he has in the past, including earlier this year, it would make a pretty big difference over what Coghlan is likely to do. Coghlan is solid; when Upton is hitting he's sexy. But hey, it's not happening. Fret not.

  5. Umm. The Astros lead their division. Yeah, but they don't know that 2016 is when they are supposed to start trying. The Astros are fighting for a division, the Cubs are fighting for a fluke 1 game playoff against a team they'll probably lose too. Kind of a big difference between those two. Both teams are fighting to get into the playoffs. It's absurd how much you keep talking like it's getting in via winning the division or bust.
  6. His July has been markedly worse than his June. Sure, some of that can be chalked up to babip and the injury, but it hasn't been a good run the past couple of months. I'd want to see more an a good series before I declare him "fixed". But the bigger issue is that corner OF isn't on the top of the priority list, no should it be. Coghlan has been a 2 WAR player, too. Giving up much to potentially eke out an extra ~1 WAR over the rest of the season seems like a waste of resources when there are bigger fish to fry. Like I said, if Preller want to tack Upton onto a Ross deal for a mid-level prospect or two, great. If the ask is significant at all, you have to pass. If he keeps hitting now like he did in April and May he blows Coghlan out of the water. I'd prefer them to take the chance if he's available (though I doubt he is for anything the FO is willing to give up).
  7. He IS basically playing like his "pre-2015 self," or maybe even better; BR has him on track to have his most valuable year since 2011. Fangraphs has him at 3.0 WAR in 2013 and 4.0 last year; right now he's 2.1. June was a crappy month, but it happens; Rizzo is hopefully snapping out of his super shitty these last couple of games or so. Upton was dealing with soreness and a terrible BABIP in July just through the ASB and seems to have snapped out of it.
  8. He's a rental who has been terrible pretty much all year. It's very premature to say he's "good again" (though he might be). I'd take him for sure, but I wouldn't give up much of anything. Maybe as an addition to a Ross trade. He hasn't been terrible all year; he's a 2.1 fWAR player a 3.1 rWAR player. He was fantastic in April and May, stunk in June, nursed a sore oblique and a retardedly low BABIP for much of July and now he's hitting again. Plus I want them to get a rental just to see all of the complacent Cubs fans lose their collective [expletive].
  9. Now you're just being cruel. someone mentioned it...like a writer but hasn't he been awful lately? Justin's been awesome lately. If by lately you mean two of the last three games, sure. He's been terrible this month. Don't caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre. He's good again and deliciously young.
  10. So basically as Rizzo goes, so does the offense. That would be a nice little sendoff for Castro if this indeed his last game as a Cub. http://i1.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/057/591/1276221006225.gif
  11. Upton and an even somewhat fixed Baez would really get my gears going. Mmmmmm, yeaaaaah.
  12. I mean, it's a semantical nitpick, but Ross and Upton are a pair of 3+ win players, and Ross is controlled for several years. It'd take a decent size quality and quantity from the Cubs to get them. That seems pretty 'big' to me. That said, I'd prefer Ross/Kimbrel to Ross/Upton, myself. Holy crap, that guy thinks Ross and Upton wouldn't be big?

  14. because i'm pissed at the guy that sucks rather than the guy who is good who just didn't get it done because baseball is baseball I'm just saying, it's pretty much expected that Castro and Ross are going to fail at this point. It's a miracle if they do anything productive. Mr. A Billion MPH off of the Bat was the one we were actually counting on. i know but i'm just fed up with watching castro fail by doing stupid [expletive] and looking completely incompetent Look, it's probably the last game I can in any way defend one of my favorite Cub players ever, and I'm going to do it, dammit.

  16. Castro clearly sucks, so it beats me why people are more pissed at him for failing there than the guy before him who has been hitting well lately. Anger is a weird thing.
  17. How did Soler not drive him in? My Gameday made his AB vanish.
  18. You couldn't pick Almora out of a lineup of one Good. He's a zilch.

  20. I've always been calling him Crandall.
