  1. That could mean some VERY different things.
  2. So now you want them to sign a starting pitcher, extend Arrieta, sign an OF AND Zobrist? Wouldn't it make more financial sense to just see what Baez can do and have Castro as backup?
  3. Again, they don't know if Schwarber is going to stick at catcher and they have no idea as to what Baez is going to do.
  4. Holy crap, that WAR is insane given how terrible his bat is. That almost makes it like deserves some kind of honorable mention. That defensive value is almost Ozzie Smith-good (plus Belanger racked his up in about 500 fewer games). What a weird career.
  5. So they ended up going 10-7 in the stretch against cruddy teams; I was thinking something like 11-6 going into it, so that ended up being not too bad at all.
  6. 3 out of the 5 making seems about right.
  7. Baez is the easy pick, but Soler this year has been hugely perplexing and a bit worrisome.
  8. I mean, it's like 50 years later and people still think Soriano's contract was an albatross. People are stupid. Zambrano's too. http://replygif.net/i/1392.gif
  9. Yeah, I've been thinking something similar. I've wanted to package Baez and Starlin up for a while now.
  10. At the moment. Castro bouncing back and being useful and Baez actually panning out aren't as far apart as you want to think.
  11. Or they just do 2 of those things and not all 3. Again, if Castro and Montero's contracts are hindering them from making major moves, then they're completely screwed to begin with. I'm not saying there's any imperative to get rid of Castro's salary (there isn't), but they have a finite amount to spend and we know that. That $22M worth of salary (Castro and Montero) is not an inconsequential amount and they could conceivably get rid of it to get somebody. I don't see how that means they're completely screwed. They are obviously far from completely screwed, even though we obviously all wish they could/would spend a lot more. Schwarber as a catcher and Baez as a baseball player, period sure as [expletive] aren't sure things at this point, so I'm not eager to see the Cubs just assuming that they are and casting off players with reasonable contracts to save money. It would be equal parts hubris and financial desperation right now.
  12. That's ridiculous. No one would be upset if the Cubs started spending money, I think a lot of people would be upset. It depends on what they spend it on. if they spend it on David Price, I would not be upset. If they spend it on Jonny Gomes, I would be upset. It takes about 2 seconds to find scores of comments online of Cubs fans flipping the [expletive] out every time Lester gives up a run; tons of them are insanely paranoid about the Cubs spending real baseball money.
  13. Or you just move them into support roles, because, hey, you need those, too! Stop with this pennypinching nonsense.
  14. That's what got us into this mess. Spending money is what Jim Hendry would do. So many stubby little rage-boners over mythical all-prospect teams that cost next to nothing.
  15. Or they just do 2 of those things and not all 3. Again, if Castro and Montero's contracts are hindering them from making major moves, then they're completely screwed to begin with.
  16. The sad thing is there are lots and lots of Cubs fans who completely embrace this mentality. I almost think they'd be horrified if they started spending a ton again.
  17. You DO realize how terrible Bryant has been for weeks now, right? Obviously we want him back in the lineup ASAP so he can hopefully get it going again, but it's not like the lineup is hugely downgraded at the moment having Herrera instead of him for a game or two.
  18. They don't really have any players with bad contracts right now.
  19. Calm the [expletive] down; no, they don't.
  20. I love how everyone watching is some level of worried/freaked out, too. Ohhhh, white people.
  21. Posey's disinterested glance back made me lose it.
  22. Because that's something you can just do with no repercussions. Is it? Because who the hell knows, assuming the player is down with it. As I recall, a few years back when Zack Greinke came out with his social anxiety disorder, and suddenly underpermforming players such as Dontrelle Willis and Milton Bradley were coming out of the woodwork saying "oh yeah, I have that too," there was debate (I believe S.I.) over whether or not a seperate DL for "mental breaks" should be a thing. Maybe it should be. Cripes. No, I was being sarcastic. Starlin isn't going to agree to a phony injury to be shut down for 2 months in a playoff race so that someone younger and cheaper can take his job, thus ending his season with the worst numbers of his career. Plus social anxiety disorder is an actual diagnosis, and then SCS starts going on about a DL about nebulous "mental break" stints. If a player goes on the DL for something like SAD it's for actual medical reasons, not because he just needs some time to clear his head or have a timeout because they're playing poorly.
