  1. Or, as it was said, you get the guy working consistently on a team that isn't beyond horrible. I'm not saying he's even one of the best closers out there, far from it, but I think he's very workable in that position when scheduled correctly. Every time he has a stretch where he doesn't pitch for at least 5 games, he stinks it up for a few games. When he's used on a regular basis, he gets the job done. I don't think he's the end-all be-all in terms of closers for the Cubs, now or anytime. I simply think that if you get a manager that knows when and how to use him, even when the team is in the toilet, you'd see much more consistent success like we did last year and the first part of this year.
  2. I can't believe Cedeno actually made me long for Neifi or Izturis last night. I hope he's sent packing so fast at the end of the year that the speed of his departure sends the Earth spinning backwards, erasing our memories of him ever having played for the Cubs.
  3. Third time I've posted this. Restovich's Major League numbers against LHPs is .280/.340/.430. Perfect platoon partner for Jones. How dare you make any sense.
  4. I know you're being sarcastic, but Christ, who didn't besides Aramis? I guess Lee's was pretty decent if you count the WBC.
  5. He had the GIDP to get out of the game unscathed, but Cedeno/Bynum couldn't even get one. I doubt anyone would be throwing regular season games at this point anyways, but there's no proof for that. Why would Cedeno/Bynum/Dempster want to throw games? That makes no sense. It doesn't. I don't think anyone is throwing games. This isn't a good team. Dempster was never that good, last year was a fluke I don't think he's nearly as good as people give him credit for, nor was he worth the contract he got, but saying his performance all of last year and the first part of this year as closer was nothing but a fluke is pretty flimsy. I think it's more likely he was/is pitching hurt and/or he just doesn't have the mental "stuff" to be a closer on a team this bad. It's one thing to close for a team that can win at least SOME games with the bat on a regular basis...it's another when almost every close opportunity is do or die because there's zero alternative with the defense/offense. Some guys can handle that pressure...I don't think Dempster can. But I do think he can still be a decent closer on the right team. That said, I wouldn't be too sorry to see him go be that closer for another team.
  6. What was he sent down for? Showing his pitches in theatPirates game way back at the beginning of this year? I ask this in all seriousness, because that's the only reason I could think of then or now.
  7. Isn't it kind of ridiculous to expect a team to rearrange its personel and finances in that way at the last minute just to appease a baseball practice that even little leaguers don't do?
  8. As in Kerry Wood? He's damaged goods, it's time to cut bait with him. Enough of these injury prone players who spend more time throwing towel drills than they do playing in a real game. id take the risk on him especially with a pay cut, the potential upside with him closing is worth a couple of million, i mean afterall we paid fantastic talent such as neifi perez and glendon rusch for more I'd take the risk, too, for the right price, with the idea that a non-overworked (ie-free of Baker) Howry could take the role if needed. I also agree with those that suggest that Mateo might make a decent closer down the line if pushed to grow into that role. I like Dempster, but I think this disaster of a season has pushed him over the edge that he was teetering on even when he was consistently closing. Despite the blown saves, I think if he can string together some appearances between now and the end of the year and combine that with his past success and he could still be appealing to teams looking for relief/closer help.
  9. Second time in a week Bynum's stupid baserunning blows a win for the Cubs (at least at the time).
  10. Burnitz's pic is beyond awesome. http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_111742.jpg
  11. He started tweeking as soon as the no-no was broken. I love the guy, but part of him needs to grow the hell up and stop being such a spaz just because things don't go exactly like he wants them.
  12. My God...Doumit has the most terrifying photo this side of Aardsma... http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_425491.jpg
  13. "It's just a little airborne! It's still good!"
  14. Lee's knocking all of his big-ish shots dead center. In time...
  15. Three rookies clog the bases in a row. Astounding. Oh, and they score because of it! Crazy talk!
  16. Crud...looks like I missed a mess of a game. I was hoping Guzman would show a little somethin'.
  17. How did they score all those runs with the bases clogged up as tight as they were? Weird.
  18. Swept by the Cardinals off of a Bennett grand slam on national TV. Don't buy Dusty a ticket home and leave him there.
  19. BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!
  20. Howry, we need to expect you to NOT be Dempster.
  21. I've been wrong most of tonight. This game will not see extra innings.
