  1. I believe Hill' going to turn out to be the stronger of the two, a solid 3, maybe even a 2 someday. Don't see that for Marshall... I highly doubt many saw Marshall as more than a really good #4 at best...maybe a #3, but not likely. But I could be mistaken. Marshall's ceiling is higher than a back of the rotation guy. But you may have been talking about for this/next season, in which case I agree. Definitely. Down the line, sure, who knows? Right now, that's not the case.
  2. Cub fans were doubting Woods health in March I posted on another MB in March of 2006 that Wood would have a season ending injury in June. Tell me how is that hindsight? Wood was always a big doubt, but Prior really wasn't over the off season short of maybe missing a start or two at the beginning. Again, Jerome really seemed to have turned a corner. Plus the Cubs had the funky schedule at the beginning that allowed to basically go with just 4 starters. It was thought Rusch could at least not totally crap the bed until Prior showed back up, then you'd have Prior/Z/Maddux/Williams/Rusch or Marshall until, in theory, Wood and/or Miller made it back or Hill and Guzman showed they could come up. At the time, that wasn't the best or worst of plans. I was far more concerned about the offense than I was the pitching. The biggest x-factor is Prior...despite what anyone would claim, him developing this mysterious season-ending condition/injur(ies)y came out of nowhere. Despite his past, you subtract those two fluke injuries, anything else he had didn't sidetrack him too much and at the most he missed, what, a start at the beginning of a season until this year? Him being out of it was a huge blow...then Williams imploding and Rushc not doing anything right just added to it. By the time it became clear Wood and Miller weren't going to be back by June, everything fell apart. That's not a plan that fell apart because "everything had to go right." That's a plan that fell apart because 5 very different and very important things went wrong.

  4. I love the idea of Murton platooning with Jones/acting as the 4th outfielder with the idea he'd take over RF once Jacque was gone. I'm confident he would have honed his game and increased his power enough to do so and contribute to whatever bopper we get for LF. I like Murton, but I'm sorry, he's not the answer as the starting LF next year. I'd much rather see Jones gone and they pick someone else there, but as it stands it looks like LF and 2nd are most likely and most easily upgraded significantly to make a real impact.
  5. Problem is, Hendry is always banking on this. Always. I disagree. I think he's been planning on too many risks to go his way, but he's not setting it up that we need EVERYTHING to work. What were the odds that Wood, Prior, Miller, Williams (hell, I think they expected Hill to be able to step up at least somewhat early on if needed) AND Rusch (even just for a brief 1-2 month window) would effectively end up being non-entities the entire year? No, noboy is going to dream of saying that was the best plan...far from it. But you're flat-out lying if you're saying you knew all of that was going to blow up in Hnedry's face. Was it the best way to go into the season? Of course not. Was it the worst? Honestly, no, it wasn't.
  6. I think he's smart enough to realize that he was reaching a critical point with his lack of success in the majors and his age...he needed to win to keep his job, basically. That's some pressure on anyone...granted, it's not the same as playoff/WS pressure, but it's not like he could have just coasted along and everything would have been fine.
  7. I am loving Hill, but if he can be the cheap centerpiece to net us a proven player like that, I'd do it in a heartbeat. It really wouldn't hurt to shop around to teams like the Reds/Yanks/Mets/Marlins/Red Sox/etc.. I'd certainly do that trade too. As a matter of fact, I think you can only find one group of people that wouldn't do that trade. The Marlins. You would have to throw in Pie to get that deal done. Definitely. And I would, too.
  8. He wasn't necessarily banking he'd even have a consistent full season...just at least a few months to theroetically get over the injury hump of Wood/Prior/Miller. Obviously, that didn't work, but there are much biggers flaws in that plan besides guessing Williams will be your #5 or #6 starter. A ton of people thought he'd (Jerome) be able to pull it off, not just Hendry.

  10. Hendry simply can't plan on having Cedeno be the starting 2Bman next season. Oh he can. This is the same guy that planned on having Jerome Williams as the #4 starter based on a 3 month anomoly in 2005. Anomaly? I guess when he was even better than that as a rookie three years ago that was an anomaly, too? Williams sucked because he lost velocity, not because his past performance was some illusion. He was extremely inconsistent as a Giant too. The Giants couldn't wait to dump him on us for Hawkins who was just terrible at the time. His stuff was never overpowering and considering that our #3 starter was on the declining stages of his career(Maddux) relying on willams was a complete misfire. The point is still that the idea of Williams being in the starting rotation wasn't just plucked out of the air. He had shown repeatedly at various times throughout his career that he had a lot of potential to be a decent #4 or #5 starter. He lost velocity and didn't pan out. Trying to use this as "proof" that Hendry is a bad GM is one of the worse examples out there you could pick from.
  11. and the giants before that, the cardinals before that, the phillies before that, the astros before that, the pirates before that, the dbacks before that, and the cardinals before that. last eight outings... 50 ip, 36 h, 13 er, 14 bb, 45 k's, whip of 1.00, era of 2.34. just for fun, if you throw out his one bad start, those seven outings come out to... 45 1/3 ip, 30 h, 7 er, 9 bb, 43 k's, whip of .86, era of 1.39. Yeah but guys have had a good stretch without turning it into a consistently good career. I think we're seeing that Hill is not just a AAAA pitcher like some thought (probably some within the Cubs' organization as well). And, many people have said that his ceiling is a #3/4 starter. I think that, with his strikeout rate and H/9 rate, that he actually could be a #2 starter if everything turned out right - which, this being the Cubs, it won't. True, but we're not seeing, say, Jerome Williams at the end of 2005 or even Marshall in 2006. What Hill is doing is out and out dominating his opponents. It really is impressive, to say the least.
  12. Right. How is he being "ruined?" Isn't he the best defensive 3rd baseman in the NL at this point? Are you serious? Maybe it's one of those Hendryisms. "Ramirez is the best defensive third baseman in the NL of guys who have less than 8 vowels in their full name and were born on a Sunday in an even numbered month." Sorry, that was me angry and drinking and dwelling on fielding percentage and not being more specific. That, and I briefly slipped into a pocket dimension where guys like Scott Rolen and David Wright, etc. didnt exist.
  13. Right. How is he being "ruined?" Isn't he the best defensive 3rd baseman in the NL at this point? Are you serious? You beat me to the comment, I did a double take when I saw that. Apparently all of the teams in the national league other than the Cubs stopped using third basemen? Yeah, sorry about that, jumped the gun with the fielding percentage alone. I still think his "laziness" is massively overhyped and is about as far from being a major problem with this team as possible.
  14. Right here. There's quite a few of us here, too. Thanks for the sweeping generalization and insult.
  15. I do. I really care that this guy loses his focus on occasion. It makes him a much less likeable player in my book. I'm not alone on this one, I don't think. Its my conviction that if Aramis would give 100% in all facets of his game, a player capable of historic feats would emerge. There is potential exploding out of him, and yet his lack of hustle every tenth time prevents the full utilization of his talent. That said, please give me your lists. This post is not about Aramis. I apologize, but I must continue to veer. Nothing you said there explains anything about what he is not doing or could be doing that is missing due to this vague "not hustling." I'm genuinely not trying to be insulting, but none of that appeared to actually mean anything tangible. Now, here are my lists: Likes -Seeing any of the kids play besides Cedeno. Nothing personal, Ronny, but your play this year combined with most of your minor league history shows little to nothing along the lines of having a quality MLB career. -Seeing Lee come back and play like a pro. -Seeing Aramis play D like the best 3rd baseman in the NL and mash at the plate. -Seeing Hill find himself and prove my opinions and theories about him completely wrong. Dislikes -Bynum -Jacque Jones not being platooned -Bynum -Novoa -Dempster either losing whatever mental "stuff" he had before and/or being given a ridicuously sporadic and stupid use schedule. -Cedeno either screwing up basic plays or acting as an offensive black hole. -The Cubs forgetting how to hit home runs and replacing them with attempts at meaningless stolen bases. -Bynum -Z worked into the ground. -Pitcher after pitcher on the DL. -No Wood and Prior. -Bynum
  16. Winner. By a million miles.
  17. Right. How is he being "ruined?" Isn't he the best defensive 3rd baseman in the NL at this point? Who gives a crap if he doesn't leg it out every so often? He's not getting injured, he's got 3rd locked down and he's hitting like a beast. Again, how is he "ruined?" And Murton needs a haircut. Looking like Carrot Top with hat-hair isn't doing it.
  18. TRIUMPH! Another #1 draft pick we can flush down the toilet! IN YOUR FACE, THE REST OF BASEBALL! We'll ruin 'em before you can get to 'em!
  19. Oh, good. It's Roberto "Winning is for losers!" Novoa.
  20. Because Moore was brought in to pinch hit for the pitcher and stayed in the game after Aramis, I believe, got ejected in that inning.
  21. Juan Pierre gets a hit with RISP? Did I fall into a wormhole?
  22. Scott Moore's Gameday pic is high-larious.
