  1. Why do you think they would opt to trade him before next season, and why do you think a trade that early would be one where the Cubs don't have to pay out to get him? Of course, he can be had earlier for a "reasonable deal," go for it, but how likely is that? The Cubs have their most realistic chance to land him in 2012. He's almost certainly going to cost much more in years in money than Dunn. If the Cubs get him then they really wouldn't be getting for a significantly greater amount of "prime years" vs. if they sign Dunn in 2011, especially since Gonzalez is likely going to want something like 7 years.
  2. WAR the past two seasons: Gonzalez: 6.6, 5.3 – career average: 3.15 Dunn: 1.2, 3.9 – career average: 2.7 If we go back a third year, it's 1.0 WAR for Dunn vs 3.9 for Gonzo. Even factoring in Dunn's move to first this year, he's still a couple of wins worse than Gonzalez. Add in that Dunn is 31 in November and will still cost quite a bit over 3-4 years, trading for Gonzalez looks like a pretty good option. Keep in mind also that Gonzo is still in his prime years, whereas Dunn is getting near that age that decline is very reasonable to expect. I wouldn't trade the farm for Gonzalez, but I'd give a decent amount for him. But how are they going to trade for him now? It's highly unlikely that they trade for him now, and likely won't until the deadline next season at the earliest, and even then it would be better for the Cubs just to wait to see if he tests FA in 2012. That said, I'd rather go for Dunn now since he's liked the Cubs for a while, is available now and likely could be had for less money and years (and Gonzalez would be 30 if the Cubs signed him for 2012).
  3. Obviously not alive in 2006.
  4. Exactly!!! Sign an FA outfield bat for a year then bring Jackson up mid-way through then hope Sori takes a trade Yeah, because the biggest problem with trading Soriano is getting him to accept it.
  5. Why would a great player not be valuable to a terrible team?

  7. Plus most of "the kids" suck.
  8. Please note that the offense still is wretched. The pitching was very good for most of this year, and look where it got us. Obviously, nobody is saying pitching be damned, but the main concern right now needs to be bolstering the offense.
  9. The latter was mentioned (at least the end of the Expos) as part of the strike segment. Though really, both of the above just represent the height of baseball apathy and really fly in the face of the whole "baseball is stronger than ever" vibe. I suppose they could have tied the WS win in to the whole Black Sox, but that would have felt pretty perfunctory given that it's the lowest rated WS of all time. If people didn't care when it happened, why would they care now?
  10. He was amazing in August, but he [expletive] sucked for most of this month and July. June was also wretched, May was pretty bad, but April was amazing, too. I really have no idea what to make of him at this point.
  11. Damn, this was shaping up to be a weird one.
  12. Wait, Soriano at 2nd? Prepare to be watched, game.
  13. Crap, now my insane and inexplicable plan to kidnap Austin Jackson and force him to play for the Cubs has been revealed.
  14. So you've got Fukudome gone after next year, which means that RF needs to be taken care of. Yeah, I know Colvin is a lot of people's favorite of the moment, but if the Cubs are trying to offset a declining Soriano in terms of OF production they'll have to aim higher, unless Colvin shows some significant growth in his time as a 4th OF in 2011. I have no idea what to expect out of Byrd his last two years here. His first half was a lot of fun to watch, but his second half has been pretty pedestrian at best with long stretches of crappiness. Does Austin Jackson still project as a CF in the bigs? How likely is it we could/should see him up with the Cubs? Could he be ready by 2012?
  15. Barf.
  16. So they suck it up one more year and look to replace him in in LF in 2012 if he stinks again in 2011. Or they look to shore up RF and/or CF to offset his decline. It's not like the money he's getting paid is going to be a surprise to the organization; they don't have to wait him out. An organization that makes as much money as the Cubs shouldn't have a problem absorbing Soriano's contract in its final years, though so long as Ricketts holds onto Hendry then it's likely to be a problem. What's the OF FA class looking like after 2011?
  17. So when it's clear he's no longer any good just bench him. Seems simple enough.
  18. Use the bridge next time, jersey.
  19. That last part is true, which is why they should do the smart thing and go with guy like Quade instead of a rampaging ego-monster like Sandberg. Though I'm still not sure why you don't think it's impressive when a team can beat up on playoff teams when they don't care.
  20. That means only 46% of his home runs over his career have been clutch. LESS THAN 50%?!?!?! He's history's greatest monster.
  21. This is a wonderful, wonderful quote. Apparently it doesn't matter if the Cubs beat playoff teams; it only matters if it actually matters to the Cubs. So does that mean the trick is for the Cubs to actually play like the games don't matter to them? Because the wins count only if the game matters to the Cubs, and the Cubs can't win when the game actually matters to them, so they somehow need to play the entire season like it doesn't matter. WE'VE CRACKED THE CODE.
