    What I don't get is the thought that signing a Prince/Pujols this year means the team is "going all out" to win in 2012. Does the rest of the contract not count? Does the contending team have to be put together in one offseason? There won't be any bats of Prince/Pujols caliber available after 2012, unless Kemp somehow reaches the market. Getting Prince/Pujols would shore up 1B for the next 5 years at least, allowing Theo to concentrate on the other team needs. Exactly. There's this underlying tone from some that seems to be saying that the Cubs would only have like 1-3 years to win with either Pujols or Fielder, and that's almost certainly not the case.

    Not if it's someone who's been a Major League coach before. Sandberg doesn't yet have that on his resume, and it's a plausible distinction. I don't think there's any way Sandberg can come back as a coach. If the Cubs are going to bring him into the fold it's going to have to be as manager. Making him a coach or even a minor league manager is going to be putting undue pressure on whoever is hired as manager because the local media and meatball fans are going to be screaming for Sandberg every time the Cubs hit a rough patch.

    Good. I want the rest of baseball to hate the Cubs a la the Red Sox and the Yankees. This is a step in the right direction.

    Pitching abuse was much more widespread than the notion that managers don't really matter. I know I had those conversations with people on the espn board, but those people mostly came here. There were not, however, many of them. I mean, you can disagree all you want; I'm just trying to answer your question. Mostly people simply did not view him as the monster he would become.

    Probably not. Most people here, fortunately, don't view managers as too critical a component, and back in 2002-2003 the idea of pitching abuse and such wasn't as prevalent as it is now (or would be within a couple years of Dusty's hire).

    I wasn't trying to argue that BJax is/will be as good as Upton, just that I'm not sure the difference between the upside of the two players is great enough to give up all the cheap talent you listed and have to add the payroll. I really like Upton and would be all for targeting him, I'm just concerned that adding him, Pujols, and Wilson all together may be adding too much payroll and giving up too much cheap talent. I guess it's less of a criticism of your trade proposal and more a hesitation to give up that much cheap talent when we're adding two monster contracts at the same time, if that makes any sense. It does, and I agree.

    Yeah, 2008 was amazing, but it very much had this underlying "they need to win NOW" vibe. I didn't think they fall off as quick as they did, but I remember thinking that if they were going to be competitive in 2009 it was going to be by winning 85-90 games instead of 90+.

    Nobody...What's going on? Like an hour ago or so I posted two goofy Bearclaw-related pics/posts. They vanished the first time and I thought it was my connection screwing up, so I posted them again. They definitely showed up in the thread and when I just got back on a few minutes ago I saw they were gone again.
