    A headline on deadspin this morning is: "For Some Bizarre Reason, A Jay Cutler Injury Is Shocking News" There will be a perception of Cutler as soft. I guess I'm looking at this from the perspective of a Bears fan, so yeah, I guess non-Bears fan aren't going to pay as much attention to them as I do, but I had no idea Cutler being easily injured was a "thing." They're acting like last year was his rookie season or something.

    Even the meatballs won't go with that, will they? It's not like he's dealing with chronic, nagging injuries. He came back from last season no problem and this is just his thumb. Are even the meatballs THAT dumb? I'm sure some will. If this season goes down the tubes, they will harp on Cutler being fragile. This is just far out of my scope of reasoning that it blows my mind; it's like the "he's soft" talk. The guy has had the absolute [expletive] kicked out of him since he's come here and all he's ended up with is a relatively minor knee injury, a concussion and a broken thumb (all while playing with diabetes) and there are people who think he's fragile? If he was actually fragile he'd have been crippled or dead a while ago.

    What play was it? That's so odd because everyone else is saying it was on the int return and it kinda looks like it if you watch the replay. We're they reporting as fact or just speculating on when it might have occurred? If that is when he injured it, I definitely makes me wonder why he can't play. He made some really nice throws in the 2nd half, which was his better and more accurate half of throwing the ball. I'm sure adrenaline helped mask the pain, but shouldn't be enough to overcome that sort of injury. No didn't say it as a fact, but they showed him make a throw, get hit on his thumb and then look down and start flexing it. Probably a combination of the two. That thumb got rocked pretty hard on the interception return, so if he did hurt it earlier that just sealed the deal.

    So long as the players don't murder each other I'm pretty much set on worrying about discipline.

    Yeah, that "cowboy up" team wasn't really a tight run ship by any standard. There are all kinds of team cultures that can win. I've said it before and I'll say it again; it was only with this last season that suddenly they went from being lovable drunken idiots to "EVERYTHING IS OUT OF CONTROL!!!!"

    Again, I'm trying to frame the argument so we can get to the bottom of which is more important to folks -- fielding the best team possible in 2012, or building for the future. If you consider that inexplicable and absurd, then feel free to bow out of the discussion. Yes, we know how you're trying to frame this; that's the point. It's not an either/or proposition. The Cubs can do both and should do both and I want them to do both. So you'd trade Marmol for Hernandez. Thanks, that's very helpful to know. Keep flailing, pal.

    That's not a scenario relegated only towards the 2012 season. This is a subjective hypothetical that you're inexplicably trying to narrow to an absurd degree.

    Well, Pujols is. Fielder, as good as he is, isn't really all that rare a player. Right. Fielder is being way overhyped. Guys as good as him are available most years. Pujols is definitely a rare case. Rare in terms of the cost too (I think it's safe to assume). Who are these guys who are as good as him and when are they going to be available? And do they play 1b? I'm certainly not suggesting that Fielder is an elite player that the Cubs absolutely cannot pass up on, but who fits the Cubs biggest need next year or the year after that? And what are the chances that they will still be available at that time? He's going to cost and he's probably going to cost more than he's worth over the life of his contract. But, that's the price one has to pay for not developing those true talents from within and having to sign them away from other teams. This is nothing new. Right. Fielder isn't as rare as Pujols, but he also likely isn't as common as dave thinks, and given how well he fits the Cubs' needs and the resources they have it's foolish for them to act like they have a strict budget crunch.

    Well, Pujols is. Fielder, as good as he is, isn't really all that rare a player. It's rare enough that a player even of Fielder's caliber becomes available for nothing but money. Add onto that the Yankees, Phillies and Red Sox aren't involved in the bidding, and it solves the team's most glaring positional need when there isn't a single viable option existing within the system, and it's easily an opportunity that almost never comes along. Agreed.

    What does the Red Sox under Theo tell you about accountability?

    By why would they wait to "build in a different way?" Signing someone like Pujols or Fielder doesn't prevent them from improving the team down the line, be it through trade, the draft or FA.

    Why would he need more time to realize the Cubs have gaping holes both at 1B and in the middle of their order?
