  1. It's the one cool thing he does that makes him barely technically good.
  2. The Toon Squad won because they went out and got the ultimate free agent. CHECK AND MATE. Theo needs to start kidnapping players and their lucky jockstraps, or else he's just not trying hard enough.
  3. It's like the whole legal legend about pornography: "I know it when I see it." I know there's a huge middle ground between the Cubs horsefeathers ass, "technically good" OF and a trio of world beaters out there. Plus, come on; chastising me for being a meatball (and I am) and then tossing out Harper (or Machado instead) in 2019 all, like, "welp, that's certainly this guy going forward, good thing the Cubs have the player equivalent of the generic brands from Repo Man instead," seems kinda iffy.
  4. I'm turning 40 in 2 days; I figure since death must be right around the corner it's time to throw caution to the wind. I want baseball Monstars, not the lamest custom players made by some nerd trying to be "realistic" with his Road to the Show guy.
  5. Hence the "almost." He's cool in one way (arguably the only way he's not just a complete disaster otherwise).
  6. I could not possibly give less of a horsefeathers if guys like Schwarber or Heyward are "technically good." That's so lame, and they really suck in almost all of the cool ways it actually matters.
  7. ...feels like the most technical of technicalities. The hitter's version of the laboring starting pitcher who technically gets the bare minimum needed to technically have had a quality start. if you were talking about 7 guys who are just technically above average, and didn't include a bunch of guys who are actually way above average, you'd have a point I figured it was painfully obvious that I wasn't talking about the 4 actual good hitters.
  8. It is, however, very frustrating. And stuff like this: ...feels like the most technical of technicalities. The hitter's version of the laboring starting pitcher who technically gets the bare minimum needed to technically have had a quality start.
  9. Yeah, the Cubs were good and smart to not try and improve the offense at all. Like, do literally nothing. Like, instead actively try to make it worse by unleashing Daniel Descalso on it. It's not like it wasn't obviously going to be a season-long fight for the division again. FEAR CHANGE.
  10. Still the #1 All Star:
  11. Javy last 14 games - .670 OPS Willy last 17 games - .564 OPS KB last 12 games - .609 OPS Rizzo last 10 games - .674 OPS conveniently picking my sample sizes of course. Every baseball player slumps, but its rough when the only good hitters on the team sort of slump at the same time. FTfY
  12. cubscott34, come on down!
  13. Accurate. Was born in 83, Disco was pretty dead by the time I was forming cognitive memories and getting into music myself so I only was ever exposed to it through those exact pop culture references. And the only time I ever saw people on modern shows lamenting the disco era it was white people interacting with other white people about it (i.e. that Freaks and Geeks episode) Though even that awesome F&G episode touches on the whole social divide aspect. It's not even just that Nick likes a type of music his friends thinks is lame; it's that he loves the dancing part of it and it's something "girly" he genuinely loves and wants to do with his new girlfriend. In an episode all about saying goodbye and/or moving on or discovering new things, it's a nice subtle way of showing how it was a genre that let a lot of people celebrate themselves.
  14. Man, I thought I got lucky with that Bruce pick, but that he would taper off pretty quickly. Whoops.
  15. Cool! I figured that was the case. Thanks for checking!
  16. this. dance music, especially disco, was "music for [expletive]" in the eyes of the public at that time and all the way up until the late 2000s/early 2010s. there's a deeper conversation about EDM/dubstep (or, at the very least, what america terms "dubstep") masculinizing dance music for heterosexual white dudes that i can get into. also, if you want a REALLY good book about the history of dance music/dj culture, you can't go wrong with last night a dj saved my life: https://www.amazon.com/Last-Night-DJ-Saved-Life/dp/0802146104 deep insight about the history of alan freed, soul music, northern soul, hip-hop, disco, house music, techno, jungle/drum and bass: everything is connected. Seconded. This book is AWESOME. I just got the digital edition and happily passed the physical copy I had to someone who would appreciate it. One of the best musical histories I've ever read.
