  1. Good god, man! How hard is it? If you want your protoypical "leadoff" hitters, and you're going to narrow it down to speedy guys, then your #1 priority is to get a guy that gets on base. And guess what? Roberts gets on base more. batting average with get you laughed off this board anyway, but it'll especially get you laughed off this board when YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT FREAKING LEADOFF HITTERS. in fact, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA Is it wrong to have a different opinion?? Of course it is. What, did you think this forum was for debate? But seriously, OBP is a much more important stat for a leadoff hitter than average. Especially for the guy who hardly ever bats with anyone on base, a walk is just as good as a single. That said, I don't know if I believe that Roberts will be any good next year. He is going to be 35, whereas Pierre will still be under 30. I think my preference would depend on the contract given out. If the team could do much with the money saved by ging after Roberts, then by all means, do it. I was just giving some info on the two players. Then I was attacked for having a different opinion. Seriously man that is messed up. No you weren't. You were "attacked" for using a horrible stat to judge a hitter.
  2. AVG is a horrible way -- on it's own -- to judge a hitter.
  3. Cesar Izturis Career SLG: .339 Carlos Zambrano Career SLG: .359
  4. I think he's pointing out that it's pretty easy to buy a glove. Cedeno's just a rookie. He may not have the funds available to buy another glove. You're kidding me, right? You know what the MLB minimun salary is, right? I do believe he was kidding you.
  5. last year was not a breakout year for him. The year before was and it was still a pretty atrocious offensive year. and I wanted to free up about 7-8m to spend on other players, not to put in the trib's pocket. you should get all the money you can out of a deal if you're selling. I'd rather have middling prospects because they aren't going to cost money and prospects typically have upside. Izturis has upside, but it seems unlikely it's more than being a mediocre hitting defensive shortstop.
  6. A lot of us have pointed out how defense is really not a problem with this team. I don't think anyone is opposed to trading Maddux, is trading Maddux while not shedding salary sans about 2 million dollars that upsets us most. And Izturis sucks at the plate. Any success he had may have been fluky as he was about at the same level in the minors as he is now. And he's coming off of TJS.
  7. yeah, it's still up. good stuff, awesome research, and another fantastic job by the cracker jack writers of cubs.com
  8. i pronounced that out loud and thought i was joe morgan for a second there.
  9. by my calculations--extensive research (3 clicks)--the rangers have the 10th best pitching staff in the AL. He was only 9 off, give him a break. Anyways, how do you even come up with that ridiculous observation?
  10. in 20 years when all the kids that read moneyball and peruse forums are in sportswriting and all of the older guys that have no concept on value are dead and buried/retired.
  11. watching the webcast of the boise game brings two thoughts into my head: Lincecum is really, really good. Pawelek has a strange delivery. I hadn't seen it before.
  12. it'd be awesome if coletti came out and said "Yeah, we were offering them Guzman and LaRoche for Maddux, but he insisted on Izturis, so we jumped on it."
  13. And in 2005, we potentially could've had the best offensive middle infield with Nomar and Walker. Wasn't there an article on ESPN that said the Cubs could have one of the best offensive infields ever if they acquired Soriano?
  14. This may just take the cake for worst lineup of the year.
  15. it's much less than that over the course of a season in most cases.
  16. It's a skill that some are better than others. true, but to say that most it is more than a guessing game would probably be wrong.
  17. it would be hilarious if ramirez left and we had an IF of Lee, Cedeno, Perez, Izturis.
  18. WE NEED PEOPLE WHO CAN ACTUALLY GET ON BASE. You can get that from other positions. If Izturis returns to his 04 form his 330 OBP will be just fine from the 7 spot. If we can hopefully sign Carlos Lee or Soriano this offseason we will be set. Pierre, Barrett, Lee, Soriano/Lee, Ramirez, Jones/Murton, Izturis, Cedeno. What makes you think his "form" is the 330? Could it be all of the other seasons where he has been much worse? I think that was an anomoly, not something to be expected. His minor league OBP was 311, and it's 295 in the majors. Fine i'm an idiot and all of you are right. There is more to baseball than stats. All of these GMs that rely on stats have not won a World Series, besides Epstein but he is different from teh rest of them because of his extremely high payroll. There is no possible way a guy can go from being a genious back in 2003 to a complete moron now. This is all hyporcitical. your views are intriguing to me and i would like to subscribe to your newsletter. Thanks for the sarcasm. It just seems that everyone on this board puts very little emphasis on the art of scouting. that's because it's not really an art, it's a guessing game.
