I didn't care for him last year. I'll be putting the Pat and Ron track on MLB.TV whenever he's on, though in fairness I would've likely done that even if I thought he was fine.

YTTV and Paramount have already reached a deal, CBS isn't going anywhere. I was keeping an eye on that too because recording Jeopardy is an embarrassingly large part of why I still have the service.

That's a terrific quote, but I got a laugh out of him joking that he wasn't gonna help any of his teammates adjust to Tokyo during the series so they'd know how he felt last year.

My experience with these things is that it usually doesn't become public until really shortly before the deadline.

He did have a couple really nice swings. His second hit he really went down and got a low pitch and hit it hard.

I feel like Bregman is just the straw that broke the camel's back for some of these guys, which I can appreciate. Personally, I'm cool not paying Bregman $40M per year when he's already in offensive decline, but the general look of having a significantly lower payroll than the past 2 years is bad. The fact that it seems designed to minimize money on the books in anticipation of a lockout after the '26 season is another annoying factor. To cross sports, it reminds me of when Jerry Richardson basically threw away the Panthers' 2010 season prior to the summer 2011 NFL lockout because he didn't want any money on the books.

It's not a double edged sword for owners. Attaching the penalties means they can justify not offering those free agents as much money under the guise of "protecting the future." There's a reason they want it and players don't.- 470 replies

KC Johnson just reported the 2nd year of the deal is a team option, which makes it a little more understandable.

I mean it's pretty damn obvious why Lonzo would want to. It's less clear why the Bulls would unless they feel really really good about him being able to play real minutes at some point. It's great that he's good for 20ish minutes a game now, but the utility of that is limited.

And he would never have noticed the relative pittance of a handful of million dollars per year it would've taken to maintain that goodwill, or at least lessen the decline. But as we know, the truly wealthy don't really give a horsefeathers if us paeans like them, or else they wouldn't be as wealthy.

Between that and ponying up to keep all the stars from going pro, it definitely shapes up as a 'no excuses' type season for James Franklin. Not that he needs excuses - getting to the semifinals is an unqualified really good season - but they seem all in on 2025.

I mostly agree with you and wouldn't have sent the house, but there were few good options available. Ohio State was going to throw it to a stud receiver and I think ND knew it so just tried to force a mistake. Aso worth noting that Will Howard converted several first downs on scrambles in the game and ND's front four (which consisted of 3 backups due to injuries and a guy who's been on a bad wheel all season) wasn't getting any push at all.

Baseball has created a complete crapshoot postseason where if you get in the playoffs you have a legitimate chance.

Angeli will likely be competing with Carr (Kenny Minchey could be in there too but seems like the odd man out), but I think if Carr loses that battle that's a bad sign. Angeli is a very good QB in the Tommy Rees/Ian Book mold and with the talent ND will have on offense he could win 10 games, but he's not seriously competing for a title, while Carr has much more ability. (And similar to what I said about Leonard, Angeli probably saved the season vs Penn State, so I will never take a shot at him, just calling it as I see it.)

The rumor was that ND picked Riley Leonard over Will Howard (who isn't elite either but did a good imitation of it last night) when transfer hunting last year, so there's probably some scouting there. (Note - I will love Riley Leonard forever and he was pretty good last night, so this is not shade on him.) The previous OC was horrific at QB evaluation. For all his skills as a HC, Brian Kelly sucked at developing QBs unless they were low-ceiling guys. Supposedly CJ Carr (the presumptive 2025 starter) has the skills to be great, so maybe he'll be the difference, though I've heard that line before.

You had to go wake them up. 😛 At least they didn't wither and die, I guess. Will still be the highest poll finish for the team since 1993 (I assume they'll be no lower than #3). Get a better quarterback (Riley Leonard will be fondly remembered forever but you aren't winning titles with guys like that unless you have Ohio State level dudes everywhere else), keep raising the talent floor, keep knocking at the door and maybe the next time you won't have to play a backup defensive line with your best offensive player visibly unhealthy and the other team won't have 3 first-round picks at WR.

Ohio State is the most talented team in the country and it was always a matter of if they felt like playing like it. Notre Dame's 2 most important position group (the lines) were both crushed by injury all year and OSU is the first team good enough to take advantage. Football isn't complicated.

It really is hilarious. Spending is literally the only advantage available to the Cubs and they have just chosen to opt out of it

There would have to be some serious negotiating to get to that point. When the owners proposed a cap and floor during the 2022 lockout, the numbers were flat-out insulting and would've resulted in a serious drop in player compensation. The owners are going to have to open their books the way other sports' owners do if they want a cap.

I told a friend of mine yesterday it's a good thing MLB does have a stupid playoff system because otherwise the Dodgers would win titles forever. If LA's goal is to get everyone outside SoCal to push for a salary cap, they're on their way.

Good catch on the 4 + 1 rule; I had forgotten about that. So I think we can expect a new City Connect at some point. The original idea of the CC's was 3-year cycles and the Cubs were already on year 4 with the Wrigleyville uniform. (I never much cared for the uniform but the cap started to grow on me after a while.)

It's pretty much a semantics game. Apparently the difference is that Nike designs the City Connect; the Cubs themselves came up with this one. But as they are replacing the Wrigleyville uniforms and are even being worn the same days (Friday home games) as those were, they're functionally a City Connect uniform.
