  1. Exactly. Typical garbage from them. In all fairness, it wouldn't be very smart to spend 17-20 million per year on him when we have so many other holes to fill. Unless the posting fee doesn't count towards the payroll budget, it wouldn't make a lot of sense. What the Cubs should do is try and get Kuroda as quickly as possible, while at the same time get Schmidt/maybe Zito locked up as quickly as possible while other teams are focusing on Matsazuka. But multi-tasking doesn't seem to be Hendry's best quality.
  2. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2640133 At best, seems like a lateral move to me. Bochy must really hate Alderson.
  3. All of the above could be true but it still does not explain taking on another all-glove-no-bat middle infielder for anohter year and a half. I'd rather they not traded Maddux or gotten a couple of AA level roster fillers. What good would that do? At least Izturis has perceived value in the baseball world
  4. Dude, catchers can't lead off
  5. This is Zambrano's team.
  6. These were bad deals, but you conveniently forgot to mention that he was also able to trade Neifi and his contract for a worthwhile prospect. And, at the time it was given, Rusch's contract didn't seem so terrible after viewing some of the other deals that were given out at the time (Jarrod Washburn comes to mind.) A short-sighted trade that didn't work out. But you make it a lot worse than it really was when you say "three young arms." You should be saying "one good young pitcher." Besides Nolasco, the other two were trash. The blind hate for Jacque has been discussed a lot on the board, so I won't go into it. I just find it funny that you would call a deal for someone who was one of the most efficient (in terms of cost v. production) RF's in the game a terrible deal, especially when he'll only be making about 4 million each of the next two years. This is mostly on Dusty. Besides, when they were getting murton's playing time, he was in the midst of putting up a .400+ OPS and was clearly slumping. How long did this last? A week? Maybe two? I agree. Macias was worthless. Hopefully, with Dusty gone, these type of players will never appear again. *waits for Hendry fat-jokes and Dunkin' Donuts comments*
  7. I think that's more the fault of minor league coaches, not scouts.
  8. Yea, but he doesn't pitch. Having an All-Star lineup with lousy pitching won't get you too far (see the Yankees). The Yankees got very far. The Mets have as well, with a rag tag collection of pitchers toward the end. Why people seem to think that winning 97 games isn't very far is beyond me. It's makes for great copy when you talk about great pitching shutting down great hitting. But lots of really mediocre, or even crappy, pitchers shut down lineups from time to time. Great pitching didn't help San Diego, Minnesota or the Angels much. This team needs both pitching and hitting. I agree that the team needs both pitching and hitting, but the objective is to win a World Series, and teams with bad pitching usually don't do that. the Yankees won't be winning the WS this year, the Mets probably won't and the Red Sox didn't last year. Assembling a great offense and surrounding it with pitchers you hope won't lose you games isn't a great strategy to win a championship.
  9. Will someone please explain to me why people still think of Soriano as a leadoff hitter?
  10. As long as he's never uttered the phrase "Walks clog the bases" I think he's an upgrade over Dusty in that area
  11. I will. But since he's going to be pimped as a guy who is supposed to offer the best chance to win now, then if they don't make the playoffs in 2007, all bets are off. We don't even have to wait that long. If it is May, and players are making the same stupid fundamental mistakes, Iszturis is batting higher than 7th, then I'd say all bets are off. Agreed. If we get off to another horrible start and players are still whining, making terrible mistakes and refusing to work counts, than this has been a waste. Hopefully, Piniella can instill some sort of attitude into this team to make them play closer to their potential and not bury themselves within the first two months. Also, does anyone (i.e. Bruce) know if it's possible that he might hire Chambliss as his hitting coach? After what he did with players like Lopez and Encarnion, I think he'd be a good choice.
  12. I don't think he's ever thrown 95. He's thrown 88-91 pretty much his whole career. The only red flag that Zito raises is the walks. That was a very Cub-like performance this year. Just imagine: Zito + Rothschild=160+K's, 120 BB
  13. the Marlins and Devil Rays do that because they have to. There's no reason the Cubs, as a big market team, should have to start from scratch with our crappy farm system. They should be spending money and trying to compete while building up a farm system, as they appeared to be doing up until a few years ago. Besides, only Barrett would be worth trading at this point. Ramirez couldn't be traded (assuming he signs an extension) and Prior and Lee are both pretty low in terms of value right now.
  14. Kurkijan on ESPN right now, YES Network is saying that Torre has told them he will be the manager next year. Kurkijan also says A) Cubs don't look like a team that can jump into the playoffs next year, like the Nationals, so Piniella wouldn't be a good fit B)Not sure if front office really wants Girardi
  15. Interesting point. By the way, moneyball isn't about stats. It's about identifying weaknesses in the market and exploiting them. It's more about the economics of baseball. But I'm sure you already knew that; otherwise you'd just look silly talking about things you don't know. You'd be better off using the term sabermetrician. You're right about Moneyball, but there's a lot of people that fail to realize this. A lot of people just read Moneyball and, as a result, cling to OBP. What they fail to realize is that their Hero incorporated a lot of the things they criticize (defense, productive outs) into his philosophy a few years ago because he felt they were undervalued.
  16. Yeah, players with an ERA over 7 and mysterious injuries seem a lock for Comeback Player of the Year Trading Prior for Dunn would be a tough call, but at this point I'd probably do it. When Dunn hits his prime, he could be a consistent 50 HR, .400 OBP, 900+ OPS threat. And as hard as it is to find pitchers like Prior, it's also hard to find people who could put up those offensive numbers. And with the way Prior gives up homeruns, I don't think his numbers in Cin. would be that stellar.
  17. Anyone want to take a guess on who will be the first Chicago columnist to say the Cubs "blew it" by waiting too long to hire Piniella? I'm going to go with Mariotti
  18. IMO, Bochy is probably the best fit for this team of all the possible candidates. I've never heard of him overworking his pitchers, and while he might not prefer younger players, I don't think you're going to find many mangers who do like young players. He doesn't seem as against them as Dusty, which is all that matters.
  19. That would not get it done. Not even close. Schuerholz would not trade his franchise player in his prime for a possible #3 starter and a player with no long-term future for the Braves. We'd need to give up more, especially when we'd be competing against other teams for him.
  20. management, he's on there alright, which one is still a mystery Juedes, you're really losing here, but I believe you
  21. It's not just that he rode them down the stretch, it's that he had them throwing 110-130 pitches per start in April and May. I agree you can't blame him for trying to get us into the playoffs, but abusing them the whole year was unnecessary.
  22. Did you go to St. Ignatius? :D Not if he has a soul. Co-sign. St. Ignatius=factory for bad football players disguised as educational institution
  23. From Tribune: Really, Juan? How should we judge our manager? By how he makes our players feel all warm and fuzzy inside? From the Suntimes a few days ago: Well, maybe he should have. From Jacque in the Tribune: Actually, Jacque, I think there's one person who would not tell you that.
  24. Good idea! Let's count on Prior again! How does "Prior possibly healthy for 07" translate into "count on Prior again". Sometimes I think that anytime people see Prior they automatically acuse someone of wanting to count on him. As he said this, he was laying out the rotation for next year: 1. Zambrano 2. Hill 3. Innings eater 4. Prior 5. One of Marshall, Mateo and Guzman Since a modern baseball rotation has five spots, that means he is leaving one for Prior. Not a good idea. Assuming that you start a season with those players (and I will assume Prior will not start the season), you're left with an ace, a mediocre veteran and 3 unproven players, only one of which has had sustained success in the majors. That's a bad rotation no matter how you look at it. For the fourth straight year, you would be counting on career years, young players and a healthy Prior to put you over the top. I think we should try something different.
