    Jones: Injured Brownlie: Injured Blasko: Injured Hagerty: Injured Petrick: Injured Christensen: Injured The only one without a major injury on that list is Ryu. All those players had good stuff and put up good numbers at some point in their minor league career (except maybe Brownlie). At the time, I don't think it was a stretch to say that each of them were good pitching prospects.

    This might be the most productive thing Prior has done for the Cubs since 2003. The question is: can he succeed where Neifi failed? (convincing a premier free agent to sign with the Cubs/)

    When Piazza is catching, every single or walk is essentially a double. And considering the number of walks our pitching staff issues, that could be really bad.

    I think in any trade for an established pitcher, we are going to have send a top prospect back. And if they take Dempster, I think they are doing us a favor. So I would say Veal or Gallagher for sure, and then a project like Guzman or Marshall. Remember, Hendry really isn't on our side anymore. He has a one-year time horizon. There's no way we'd give up star potential along with our closer and a young pitcher with decent production and decent potential for an average starter. Maybe not. But "average pitcher" is becoming more and more valuable in GM's minds. Especially GM's who need to win some games right away. If average pitchers are going to be getting well over $10m per season, then average pitchers are going to cost star potential in trades. With average pitchers costing so much nowadays, wouldn't that in turn raise the demand for decent major league ready prospects and guys like Marshall who can reasonbly be expected to put up a 4.50 ERA? Marshall's value (and the value of other similar prospects) should go up as well when crappy veteran pitchers get more and more overpriced. How can Marshall be reasonably expected to put up a 4.50 ERA next year?

    I really can't see Hendry going for another long-term solution in the outfield. Hendry (and the rest of the organizaton) is high on both Pie and Murton, which is why he seems to be looking for a stopgap CF, whether it be Jones or someone else. Part of the advantage of getting Soriano is that he can play all 3 positions, so they can move him around until Pie is ready. That's probably a big reason they preferred him over Carlos Lee.

    Hmm...so maybe now is the time for Hendry to pounce, when the shine is off? We know JH's modus operandi at this point is to act early, before others become competitors. He did it last year with Howry and Eyre, he's done it this year now with Fonzie. If Gagne is healthy enough to be even half the closer he was in 03 and 04, he would be an incredible weapon for our bullpen. We know Lou Pa longs for the days of the Nasty Boys. Ya think he might like a late inning 1-2-3 of Howry, Wood and Gagne? Phew! I don't think Hendry has a choice. Gagne and his agent (Boras?) are probably waiting for the throwing session to drive up the price. If he does well, he might get a multi-year deal. If he can't throw, then he'll just end up with the same type of contract he would have gotten had he signed earlier

    He's supposed to have a throwing session at some point in the offseason to show that he is healthy. Until then, I doubt many teams are showing interest in him

    Co-sign. Too many people expect Hendry to sign people like Soriano to 4 year deals, and trade crap like Roberto Novoa for something worthwhile.

    See, I expect more from a major league GM. Anyone given the title of GM can make an honest run at a player. I want an agressive GM that goes out and gets these deals done.(see Dave Dombrowsi) I guess hindsight is 20/20. You spend an awful lot of energy ripping on Hendry for giving Mark DeRosa a 3/13 million contract to be a second baseman, so I can only imagine what would happen if he: a)gave an old catcher who draws about 10 walk a year a 4 year/40 million dollar contract b)proceeds to sign an outfielder with a chronic knee condition by outbidding the competition by about 4 years and 50 million dollars c)signs a 35 year-old injury-prone closer to a long term deal so he can throw 25 innings at 6 million a year. Is that the kind of agressiveness you want?

    That's ridiculous. Aardsma is nothing like Garland. He's just a middle reliever that throws hard. If you want to talk upside, we probably got the better end of this deal, as Cotts has good stuff for a lefty and (I believe) was among the minor league leaders in strikeouts one year. He was essentially Rich Hill and then was turned into a reliever. For some reason, he stopped using his curveball.

    I think that's a bit strong: Walker's OPS 2003: .761 2004: .820 2005: .829 2006: .754 DeRosa 2006: .813 It's not as if Walker was some super offensive force at 2b. He was what DeRosa was last year: above average. I'm not saying that DeRosa will match his numbers from last year, but the difference between the two doesn't seem to be as large as you make it out to be. And I'll take a slightly lower OPS for the ability to turn a double play.

    Looks like we are getting Izturis and Derosa next year up the middle. Better be getting a LOT of offense from the outfield if that's the case. The pitchers will like it. My guess is the Murton, Theriot, Cedeno will all be gone for pitching. good ridance to cedeno. i very highly doubt murton or theriot are going anywhere. Really? Bet they are gone by spring for pitching.Looks like Theriot is almost assured a spot on the bench:

    A safer bet would be Lugo, Durham, Giles not DeRosa. These would also be much more expensive options. Considering how many more players we need, we couldn't afford to spend 7-10 million on a 2b, or trade significant talent for Giles. As for Theriot, I don't like handing 27 year olds with a career slugging percentage in the minors of .337 starting jobs, not to mention the fact that DeRosa hit more homeruns in July and August of last year than Theriot has in his entire career spanning over 600 games. Theriot gets on base at a decent rate, but he shouldn't be a starter simply because he put up an OBP over .350 IN THE MINORS. Not a great signing, but better than Neifi.

    I don't know how much influence Dusty had, but I found it interesting that Rogers said Ramirez probably wouldn't have been back if Dusty was still the manager.

    I love how Rosenthal makes this out to be a bad thing. We just re-signed the best free agent for an apparently below-market deal, yet somehow we lost because we can't get Soriano for 100 million anymore. He also forgets we still have 40 million left to spend.
