  1. After 645.3 innings in three years, it is unreasonable to think maybe his injuries are behind him? Considering that he's not going to pitch until 2009, I'd say that's pretty unreasonable, yes. I think he was just saying after a guy averaged over 200+ innings for 3 years, it would be relatively safe to assume he would be "fully recovered." Then again, assuming health in any pitcher is dangerous. But after 3 healthy, Cy Young quality years, you could have reasonably assumed he was back to normal health. Still not surprising, though. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=3821
  2. He profiles as a middle of the rotation, innings-eater type starter. Definitely a highly regarded prospect
  3. I'm not really inclined to relive this argument. It's been done by guys that can argue this topic a lot better than I can. I'll let you read the article that Rob posted if you want. I suspect you won't though, because it has nerd numbers in it. So you go on thinking what you want. That's fine. Good to see NSBB's gneralized assumption-making and stereotyping is still at work. Just because I don't think DePodesta is a particularly good GM (or should be coveted by anyone at this point) doesn't mean I don't think numbers have value. He just didn't really show me anything to suggest he'd win the Cubs a World Series. I saw the article and, at first glance, it looks like basically any other GM's resume regarding trades: some good ones, some bad ones. I'll read it more in-depth later. I know you'll give him credit for Penny but remember: Penny isn't supposed to be on the Dodgers. He's only there because DePodesta couldn't complete a deal for Randy Johnson. But I don't really want to relive this argument either, as I doubt either of us will budge from our stances.
  4. I love it, more DoPo love. We have seen that in a while. You'd be better off hoping the Cards hire DoPo. Hey, he was in Moneyball and is friends with Billy Beane. He has to be a great GM. Haven't read Moneyball. But I'm capable of seeing the success the Dodgers had after two seasons of Depodesta. An 88 win season and a winning percentage around .535 over 1+ years? Jim Hendry has also accomplished this feat, but I doubt anyone would call him a success

  6. I'd take 98 Sosa over 98 Olerud
  7. Joe Carter disagrees. Beyond the onjectionable use of the exception to the rule to prove a point, Joe Carter didn't have elite slg, but yes I agree that obp is more important. I'm just saying they aren't mutually exclusive. Yeah, that's not what I mean when I'm talking about elite slugging percentages
  8. That example doesn't make sense though. It's not like a game show where we can only see this guy's SLG and only see this other guy's OBP, and you make a decision from there. You can see both, so both should be used. I agree. I was saying that someone who puts up a .550-.600 slugging will inevitably also have a high OBP (unless he's Alfonso Soriano). The guy with a .400 OBP will have a solid slugging percentage, but not necessarily an elite one
  9. If given the choice between a player with an elite slugging percentage and an elite OBP, I'll take the guy with the SLG, because anyone who puts up a top SLG basically has to be able to walk a lot too. Team-wise though, I'd take OBP
  10. If only the two had recently made a trade... Danks 6-7 - 4.83 ERA - 108 IP McCarthy 4-7 - 5.52 ERA - 76.2 IP Danks is also younger, cheaper, left handed and under White Sox control for more years. Plus, KW got Nick Masset and Jacob Rasner as well. I think Williams showed Daniels how to stockpile young talent right in his face. that is an absolute ethering, by a guy with 35 posts since 05 no less; talk about making your posts count Backtobanks <-- should never post again http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p228/irish1289/ether.jpg
  11. :?: What does that mean :?: People keep saying this, but who really is overachieving besides Fontenot? You can't say Marquis because he's been terrible ever since we've been on this streak. Marshall might be overachieving, but at this point he's had enough success where you have to wonder if this isn't a fluke anymore.
  12. Seriously, I hope the Wrigley fans give him a 10 minute standing ovation the first day he takes the mound. Sadly, it will probably be the opposite. I doubt it. Kerry Wood is probably the most universally loved player the Cubs have had since Sandberg
  13. How exactly do you go about replacing Hill? He's a top 20-40 starter in the game under team control for the forseeable future. Wow, that is a bold statement. I think that that this is wildly untrue but I would be happy to listen to you prove it. THe jury's still out on Hill. He has yet to demonstrate that he can pitch consistently year over year. No stamina. If trading Hill is all it will take to get Salty, get Salty. You're right about the jury still being out; but the jury is considering whether Salty is enough return for Hill. Pitching is the most valuable commodity in baseball, and Hill's posted phenomenal numbers since he came back last year. What more does he need to do to prove his value to his detractors? He has a 1.14 WHIP, a 3.58 ERA and his K/9 is 8.01 (and to boot he's 14th in MLB in WHIP and his 105 K's places him 23rd in MLB). His numbers are better than Zambrano's in pretty much every category except W's and GS. It seems each and every time he has any struggle he becomes 'one-pitch Rich' and everyone jumps on him. We should be glad to have Hill. The trio of Zambrano, Lilly and Hill are among the best 1-3's in baseball. But I guess Rich's lack of wins means that he isn't man enough to stand among the best pitchers in baseball. Instead we should relegate him to the bullpen or AAA. I agree, but a young catcher who has the potential to be strong offensively is probably the rarest commodity in the game today (Mauer, Martin, Clement..???). I'm not sure if I'd do the trade, but I think getting Salty would be an OK return
  14. Haha, poor cardinals. I would almost feel bad for them if this wasn't just so hilarious. Walt Jocketty mortgaged the future to win the World Series. I wish Hendry would do the same. The trouble comes when you mortgage the future and miss the championship. No he didn't. He mortgaged the future because he's not that great of a GM. Yet, they manage to win the division every year. Strange how that works it's not like he's in the same division as the red sox and yankees. 2002-2006: Yankees: 497-312 Cardinals: 470-339 Red Sox: 467-343 It would be interesting to see what he could do with an extra 50-100 million in payroll per year those numbers don't help your argument, by the way. What doesn't help? All that shows is that they have one of the best records in baseball over the last five years (I'd guess the best in the NL) while having an average payroll. I'd say the GM deserves some credit for that.

  17. He's a reliever now? I thought he a guy with ace potential at one point? He still does, but the Royals are idiots. Yes, please tell us about your inside knowledge of the Greinke situation and how the Royals are "idiots" in the matter. I'm not sure what I said that hurt your feelings, but it's a safe assumption that one of the more talented pitchers drafted in recent memory still has that talent at 23 given he's had no major surgeries. It's also a safe assumption that putting a pitcher with that much talent in the bullpen is idiotic. Sorry for running over your cat. Just because the kid could once dial it up to 100 mph does not mean he must be a starting pitcher. For reference, see Harrington, Matt and Griffin, Colt as two recent examples. . I think you're thinking of Colt Griffin. Greinke was never known as an exceptionally hard thrower, he was a prospect because of his ability to change speeds, his changeup and his superior control. He was often compared to a young Greg Maddux
  18. So you're regularly in the clubhouse then? I don't get it. I said players don't like Barrett for a number of reasons. A few people said I am just correlating the matter. I said this is not in my mind because Z and Barrett got in a fight. Z's dislike for Barrett caused the fight. This isn't hard. I replied to the wrong person. I meant to reply to whoever definitively concluded that Barrett leaving the team had nothing to do with the recent winning streak
  19. Well, he accumulated those numbers when he was good and on the Pirates
  20. It's amazing to have a manager realize the team's weakness and make adjustments to correct it.
  21. Does anyone really believe Cuban stands a chance in h*ll? I wish he had a fair shot, but am highly dubious of the the old boys club headed by Selig.. He certainly won't get a fair shot. He's going to have to outbid everyone and make sure there are no holes in his plan. Although didn't MLB approve the Red Sox sale to Henry and co. even though they didn't have the highest bid?
