  1. Didn't Reed make an all star game or two? Still a bad trade, but not the worst on the planet. You're thinking about Rick Reed. He was an all-star in 1998 and 2001 with the Mets.
  2. That is an ugly font for "Twins" on the uniform and logos.
  3. Seconded, it's really fascinating how unorganized and crazy Major League Baseball was back then. I've heard nothing but good things about this book. I'm going to read it after I finish up Banana: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World.
  4. How was that game?
  5. I can't wait to hear the interview. Scott Simon's a big Cubs fan and that's probably the only reason they did this interview. I'm also going to guess that he asked the Bartman question as a joke.
  6. Blauser was driving me crazy. I could picture him, I just couldn't get his name.
  7. 2,408 regular-season wins. Fourth all time. Sorry, forgot the link.
  8. I agree with Joe Morgan. "That's interesting."
  9. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-18-cubs-brewers-chicago-sep18,0,6241197.story If you read the entire article he seems to insinuate that after the game Lou went to hide away and get a little tipsy before being ready to address the media. :-)) We knew the team was dysfunctional, but is this a case of the media going too far? What if it's true? I'm guessing it is true, but did it need to be reported?[/quote Why shouldn't it be reported when the manager of a professional sports teams drinks before a press conference?
  10. Rodriguez, Sosa and Hill left to right. :-&
  11. Unless Rose betted on baseball as a player, it shouldn't matter what he did as manager. Don't allow him to work in baseball, or make money from baseball, but don't make light of what he did as a player. Yes he's scum (or so was Ty Cobb among others), but being a scum doesn't make him any less of a great ballplayer. The HOF is already a joke with at least 10 to 15 players (if not more) in the HOF is are not legit HOFers, so keeping Pete Rose and for that matter Shoeless Joe Jackson out of the HOF continues to make the HOF illegitimate and a fraud. How do we know Rose didn't bet on games before he was a manager or player-manager? He lied for years about betting on baseball at all. How do we know he isn't still lying about it?
  12. I realize that he's struggled at home and is much better on the road all season, but this quote suggests that there is a specific reason why he struggles at home. What could that be? He doesn't like cramped clubhouses? I wonder if Piniella meant he is going to try to get Harden more night starts..... Well he is white....
  13. My guess would be that they wanted a veteran pitcher to throw to Fox. Instead of having him catch a rookie pitcher.
  14. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Joe Morgan made a good point last night. The minor leagues fall under the major league system and the test regime has to do with the minor leagues as well. So why can someone who's been suspended during the major league season be allowed to play in the minors. And comparing a suspended player to an injured player is not a fair comparison. An injured player on the DL is not being punished for violating the rules.
  15. We get it. You don't like Blanco. You can stop now.
  16. How about not rewinding a VHS rental? What's a VHS?
  17. I've been thinking about picking up The Catcher was a Spy: The Mysterious Life of Moe Berg, anyone know if its good?
  18. There was a pretty good interview with Bruce Weber on Fresh Air today about Weber's new book As They See 'Em: A Fan's Travels in the Land of Umpires. Thought you guys might enjoy it too. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=102887815
  19. Maybe that's why Marmol didn't warm-up last night. He was gearing up to go back behind the plate if something happened to Hill.
  20. This is a few days old but I didn't see it posted anywhere. Gary Matthews Jr. took a day off on Sunday because he was so upset after being upset after Mike Scioscia told him was going from the team's fourth outfielder to fifth. Those of you scoring at home that's a fifth outfielder making $10 million this season, $11 in 2010 and $12 in 2012. http://losangeles.angels.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090329&content_id=4085224&vkey=news_ana&fext=.jsp&c_id=ana http://losangeles.angels.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090330&content_id=4090452&vkey=news_ana&fext=.jsp&c_id=ana
  21. No, no. Let him continue a petty argument with a Mod.
  22. yet another disciple of the "every sentence is it's own paragraph" school of journalism Did you scroll through the whole story or just look at the first few graphs which were independent thoughts that needed to be separate paragraphs in order to get the full effect of the writing?
  23. Doesn't Soto speak Spanish? He was born in Puerto Rico.
  24. The bankruptcy filing won't effect the operations of the Cubs directly but since Tribune owns the team anything that the company wants to do with it (e.g. sell it ) will have to go through the judge.
  25. This may actually help. From what the newspapers have said, the was supposed to be debt-laden deal to avoid capital gains tax.... or not
