  1. For their careers: Edmonds / Jones / Beltran: Range Factor: 2.75 / 2.81 / 2.81 Zone Rating: .895 / .880 / .905 Fielding Percentage: .989 / .991 / .982 Assists per game: .069 / .069 / .050 As you can see, Edmonds is right there with Beltran and Jones defensively, even if you ignore the "showboating". I don't necessarily believe in things like ZR and RF, but it's also not fair to say "I've seen Andruw Jones play, and he's better than Edmonds", or vice versa. To some extent you have to try to quantify defensive excellence, otherwise it's an endless debate.
  2. No, those plays aren't reflected in the metrics, and everyone overlooks them when Jim flings himself at a ball or goes over the wall to bring one back. Jim is the ultimate style over substance fielder...well, maybe second to Jeter. I don't think anybody ever said that Edmonds has never made a mistake in the field. What fielder hasn't? As for "style over substance", you're free to think what you want, but you're wrong. What's ironic to me is that most of the Cardinal rivals think that the Cards' pitchers would be pretty "ordinary" if they didn't have such a great defense behind them. But then when we talk about the great defense, we hear is that Edmonds is "style over substance", Eckstein can't throw, Pujols has no range, Nunez is a scrub, Walker is old, etc. etc. etc . So which is it? Are Cardinal pitchers benefitting by playing in front of a terrific defense, or aren't they?
  3. Clemens isn't the the only candidate chasing history. Carpenter has started 22 games in a row in which he allowed three runs or fewer while pitching six innings, the longest stretch of consecutive quality starts in the NL since Bob Gibson also did it 22 straight times in 1968. I'm not sure how far back you'll have to go after Carpenter's next start, to find someone who has performed this consistently over an extended period of time.
  4. I said Santo was a homer. My point was that he doesn't try to pretend he isn't. I think Santo is a terrible analyst. Buck is not one of the best. Only a STL fan could think so. He's an arrogant preppy popped collar kind of guy. Unbiased? He is so completely biased it's almost obscene. Only a St. Louis fan could think so? St. Louis didn't give him 4 Emmy's.
  5. Nope. That argument is ridiculous. That's what I said. The Maroth and Lopez arguments are just as ridiculous.
  6. Screen Name. OK. I usually go by Socnorb11. Feel free to do some research, if it makes you feel better. I'm not sure what the point is, though.
  7. I know what it means. And I say that it's "easy" to have an ERA below 2 (see Todd Jones and Chad Cordero). Is that a ridiculous argument? Of course it is, but it's ridiculous to bring Maroth and Lopez into it, also. Nobody is saying "Carpenter should win the Cy Young Award because he wins alot of games". Who has said that? Cardinal fans saw enough of Garrett Stephenson to understand that wins aren't everything. When Stephenson won 16 games, Cardinal fans still knew he was horrible. Carpenter is no Garrett Stephenson. He's also no Mike Maroth or Rodrigo Lopez.
  8. I think it's in poor taste to take message board comments personally. Do you post on any Cards boards? What is your SN? I want to give you the benefit of the doubt and respect you, but I have only this thread to go on. I've posted on lots of Cardinal boards. I'm not sure what that has to do with anything, and I don't know what you mean by "SN". I've also posted in other threads on this board, if you want to check those out. I normally don't take message board comments personally. But to say that I'm going to "stab" somebody is a little over the top for me. Heck, others on this board got offended when I said that Prior usually doesn't pitch deep into games. And yet talking about me STABBING somebody isn't supposed to offend me?
  9. Of course, he also mentions that Carp is the favorite. "Road ERA". Now THERE'S something to consider! Why is he comparing Clemens to the "average NL pitcher"? Carpenter is having one of the best years by a NL pitcher in YEARS! Compare Clemens to Carpenter, not the "average NL pitcher". What the heck do Rodrigo Lopez and Mike Maroth have to do with anything? If he's randomly comparing "wins" to try to discredit Carpenter, then I'll "randomly" pick out Todd Jones and Chad Cordero, and make a case that Clemens' ERA is garbage. That's ludicrous. I was hoping not to get into this today, but I'm here. If Clemens tried to do what Carpenter did, he'd get smoked. Clemens' OPS-against after the 6th inning is .681. Clemens would probably chasing Dontrelle Willis for 2nd place in the Cy Young voting, if he tried to do what Carpenter does.
  10. Excellent point, Chief. I don't think there's a player out there with better baseball instincts than Pujols, both in the field and on the bases. That may be true, but Derrek is no idiot, either. In the past two years, I can count the mental mistakes Lee has made in the field on one hand and still have a couple of fingers left over. And Albert is not perfect. I seem to remember him spacing out and whiffing on a throw in the last Wrigley series. Kind of like when a reciever starts thinking about running before he has actually caught the ball, IMO. Regardless, both are great defenders. Who called Lee an idiot? I'm pretty sure that I posted earlier in this thread that Lee is the better defensive player.

  12. I'm not a big Buck fan on national broadcasts, but he's tolerable. Last night, however, I was reminded just how terrible he is. The other guy actually seemed alright. But Buck is just awful. He's a homer, much like Santo, but unlike Santo, he tries to portray himself as some sort of all knowing god of baseball knowledge. At least Ronny (who I do not like listening to) is brutally honest with his work. You're joking, right? Brutally honest? Here's one little tidbit from Santo (from another thread): "Neifi has had a stellar, stellar season. I haven't seen anyone play a better shortstop. He'll be back next year." Hrabosky is horrible. I can hardly stand to listen to him. Buck is one of the best, easily (heck, the guy has won for Emmy's). He's smooth, unbiased, and informed, whether he's doing football, baseball, whatever.........
  13. Eh. I give the Cubs their due. The Cards have been pretty successful against every other team with the AAAA lineup. The Cubs simply have the Cards' number this year, regardless of who they send out there, it seems like.
  14. Ugh! I have NO confidence in Morris. Personally, I'm rooting for the September meltdown.
  15. I'm not so sure that Sean Casey doesn't deserve it this year. The guy only has 2 errors. TWO! That's pretty sporty. And he's slightly ahead of Lee in ZR and RF. Granted, I'm not sold on ZR and RF at all, but I'm not sure of any other way to quantify defensive excellence.
  16. I would concede that. I think most "defense" of Pujols defense is geared toward those that feel Pujols was buried at 1st base because he's a defensive liability. Not true. I think that Pujols is actually a very good defender. After watching him more, he's much better than I thought. I just think Lee is slightly better, and that has nothing to do with me being a Cubs fan. (If I had to only pick one of those guys to be on my team, it'd be Pujols in a landslide) I'd go along with that. Pujols isn't quite on Lee's level defensively right now, but I'd still rate Pujols as one of the better defensive first basemen in the NL, and with his work ethic, I'll be shocked if he doesn't win a Gold Glove, at some point.
  17. You can only keep a pitcher like Mulder down for so long. He's bound to break out and go back to the Cy Young contender form that he had with the A's. I'm still not 100% sold on Mulder. He's definitely not the "ace" that the Cards were hoping for. He's been getting better results lately, but his secondary numbers are still making me nervous. He's a decent #2 right now, but he always seems to be on the verge of a disaster. I'm absolutely giddy with Mulder as our 2 man into the playoffs. He's better than any number 2 we had last year. His 3.54 ERA is pretty impressive considering some of the blow outs he's suffered. Now number 3 on the other hand... I think that #3 is yet to be determined. Whoever cruises through the last month of the season (between Suppan, Morris, and Marquis) will probably get the ball in the playoffs. As of today, it's a dead heat, in my mind.

  19. I was more interested in how Mulder performed, rather than the actual outcome of the game. Mulder wasn't great, but his results are so much better when he doesn't walk anybody (go figure). As already mentioned, he could have been on track for a 9-inning shutou, if not for a bad break. He now has a 2.31 ERA after the All-Star break, which is pretty much the exact opposite of his performance in 2004. So, that's good news. I wouldn't feel too bad with him and Carpenter going into the post-season as the 1-2 punch.
  20. This post is ridiculous, and pretty classless, if you ask me. I haven't said a harsh word in the entire 41 pages of this thread. It was a joke man, and from a fellow Cards fan at that. I'm just glad I was spared. 8) I'm aware that it's a Cards fan. I still think it's in poor taste to talk about "stabbing" people.

  22. I figured that was coming.
  23. Um, no. You can't win if you don't score. You can pitch 50 straight scoreless innings, but it means nothing if you're team can't score. You cannot win without scoring at least one run. (Negatives are impossible in baseball, even if Ditka is on the mound) I think her point with the "game of chicken" is that if Clemens can hold the other team for another inning or two, then he puts his team in a better position to win in the late innings. In other words, if Clemens holds the other team scoreless into the 9th, then Houston might be able to "play for a run", by bunting a guy over or something, and win the game with one run. As it stands, Houston's bullpen gives up a couple of runs, and Houston is forced to play for a big inning late in the game, sometimes. It's nitpicking a little, but it's not completely irrelevant.
  24. One more number (maybe meaningless to some of you): Quality Starts: Carpenter - 26 Clemens - 24 In other words, Carpenter has put his team in a position to win, more often than Clemens (if that's how you view "Quality Starts", which some of you may not).
  25. THE CY YOUNG IS NOT A TEAM AWARD! Wow, it's like talking to the wall here. No, it's not a team award, but should be based on how much you help your team, in my opinion. By the logic, you should be arguing Donetrelle should win the Cy Young. Because not only has he put up pretty high numbers on the mound but his bat has been key for the Marlins also. Carpenter has been so bad with the bat, and by contrast, Willis has been so good, that Willis actually has more WS than Carp this year.  Good point. That is pretty sad.
