    I'm certainly in favor of dropping a pitcher, I want a little more versatility on the bench. If we have no backup IF on the bench come the 9th inning, it definitely limits what we can do as far as lineup shuffling.

    You move a reliever, going with 11 pitchers. That's the logical move, but Lou seems dead set on going with 12 pitchers, especially the way he's been using the pen lately.

    If Fontenot keeps this up, he's gonna have a shot at making the club...another versatile IF who is fairly patient, only he's not as fast as Theriot but he does have more pop in the bat. Only problem is who we would move to get him here. We need a decent backup CF (Pagan) and Izturis is our only true SS (I don't think Theriot can be considered a true SS and I don't think Fontenot is capable of handling SS full-time if Theriot goes down).

    7 IP, 0 BB, 9 K and only 87 pitches for Carlos Marmol. The 2 HRs aren't good, but they don't hurt all that much when no one else is getting on base.

    He had a big double in last nights game, and Len mentioned something about Murt having problems with his back before last nights game. If that's the case, maybe he'll get more starts in RF (we wont see Floyd there much, if at all).

    I think Murton's going to get his 500+ ABs this year...he may sit once in a while to get Ward/Floyd on the field and another LH bat in the lineup, but it won't happen all that often. I hope Murton gets all the ABs, he's a very good hitter. Floyd, if healthy though, can be a great one. First thing's first....Floyd still has to sign.

    I'm going. I went last year. It was fun, but kinda crazy. I thought I was a pretty darn big Cubs fan...there are some absolute nuts out there...no offense guys :lol:

    I agree that the contract being talked about is awful...but is everyone that willing to overlook the 2 good years prior to last year that Marquis put up?? I know this may sound crazy...but Marquis has a 4.55 career ERA. Lilly's is 4.60. We gave Lilly 4/40... 15-7, 3.71, 201.1 IP 13-14, 4.13, 207 IP 14-16, 6.02, 194.1 IP 12-10, 4.06, 197.1 IP 10-11, 5.56, 126.1 IP 15-13, 4.31, 181.2 IP Other than the timing of their down years, which pitcher would you rather have??

    I want to see this from a more reliable source before anyone goes jumping off bridges... His groundout/flyout ratio was 2.05 in '04 (3.71 ERA)...it was 1.70 in '05 (4.13 ERA) and it was 1.12 this year (6+ERA) If we get the '04/'05 version of Marquis, he's not bad. He'd actually be another good #3 like Lilly. I wouldn't mind him on a 1 year type deal with an option for a 2nd...but 3 and whatever upper 20's number is being thrown out there is nuts. Bottom line...'04 Marquis=good...'05 Marquis=pretty decent...'06 Marquis=ummmm yeaaa

Lilly, who turns 31 on Jan. 4, becomes the Cubs' first major pitching acquisition. The team has now signed seven free agents for a total of $272.5 million, spending $251 million alone on Lilly, third baseman Aramis Ramirez and outfielder Alfonso Soriano. The Blue Jays badly wanted to retain Lilly, who went 15-13 last season with a 4.31 ERA. They are now battling with the Cubs over right-hander Gil Meche. Both teams entered Wednesday with the goal of signing both pitchers. Lilly, 59-58 lifetime with a 4.60 ERA, will join a Cubs' rotation that already includes right-hander Carlos Zambrano and left-hander Rich Hill. The Cubs are not counting on right-hander Mark Prior, figuring that if healthy, he would be a bonus.

    I hope you're right. I want Schmidt more than anyone out there on the market right now...Zambrano and Schmidt would give this team a legit 1/2 combo.

    I don't get where people are seeing any difference between Lilly and Meche... Neither have ever gone 200 IP in a season. Lilly gave up 4 more HRs last year in 5 less IP. 4.65 (Meche) compared to 4.60 (Lilly) career ERAs K/9 and BB/9 were both fairly close last year, as well as H/9 Lilly had a 5.56 ERA in '05. Neither are great pitchers...both are going to cost between 9-11 mil per year, IMO. Only difference being, one is LH and 30...the other is RH and 28. It makes me no difference.

    I believe Theriot has played LF and RF, but I'm not sure if he's ever played any CF...I know he's able to play 2b/3b/SS/LF at least.

    If we can get a decent hitter for SS (Lugo) then I see no problem with letting Pie play CF and hit 8th...he's a great fielder. Why not let Jones play in CF and get Lugo anyways for SS? Pie is interesting but he probably wouldn't outproduce Jones next year, if we truly are going for a World Series championship. I have no problem with Jones in CF either. I'm just saying I don't think with the way our lineup is now that we will let Pie play. I'd love an OF of Murton-Jones-Soriano...it'll be one of the more productive ones in the NL, and not a bad price either (Murton is cheap, Jones is a bargain)

    But these contracts are not "crippling" to the current ownership. We have money to play with, especially when we start getting a consistant winner on the field...we'll be able to play with up to 150 mil on a consistant basis, no doubt in my mind.

    I thought I read DeRosa could play SS too? DeRosa hasn't played more than maybe 10-20 games at SS in a quite a while...He reminds me a little bit of Mark Bellhorn...he can play all the IF spots and corner OF, but SS is going to be shaky and he won't hit enough to play 1b/3b/LF/RF full-time. If him playing SS gets Theriot on the field rather than Izturis, I'm all for it.

    DeRosa would be a great #2 hitter if he keeps up last year's numbers. Now SS is up for grabs between Cedeno/Izturis/Theriot. Let Theriot have a shot there in the spring, PLEASE!

    Dunn would be a killer addition to the middle of the lineup. Murton in RF wouldn't be the greatest defensive OF, but he'd be average. The offense and OBP between Murton and Dunn would be huge, potential for 55-60 HRs between the two, and then you can afford a rookie in CF. Get a decent top of the order hitter at 2b/SS, and retain Rammy at 3b. SS/2b Murton Lee Dunn Ramirez Barrett Pie Cedeno (SS/2b) Cedeno, Pie, and whoever the #1 hitter is would provide some speed, along with Murton and Lee being at least average in speed, if not above avg. Power from 3-6, power potential from Murton and Pie. OBP from 2-6. I think that's about as good as lineup as we could hope for...unless we pull off A-Rod for SS.

    Whoa whoa whoa... If Barry Bonds (ESPN's #1 favorite player) goes to the New York Yankees (ESPN's #1 favorite team) how much time will they devote to Bonds/NYY in each program? Haha...can T.O. play baseball? And if so does he have any interest in joining the Yankees to create ESPN's Wet Dream Team?? They'd probably turn that into it's own seperate channel...haha.

    With a top 3 pick coming in '07 and quite a few "major league caliber" players already floating around AA/AAA, the system is not in terrible shape as is. Like Tim said above, we have quite a few guys capable of contributing in the big leagues...just not many "impact" players. No Miguel Cabrera's...or Ryan Howard's... We have lots and lots of upper level pitching, and a few potential top-of-the-rotation guys in the system. Pawelek, Veal, and Gallagher are the cream of the crop as far as our pitchers go, and probably make up 3/4ths of our top 4 prospects. We have 1 'big time' bat...Felix Pie. Dope has been injured...but looked good in spring training. Harvey had a monster 2nd half, but still hasn't put up a respectable AVG/OBP combo. Basically...if we add one "blue chip" guy (which we should with the #1-3 pick) and a few other solid hitters over the next year or two, we can have a very solid system.

    I would have loved to get Snider, but I have no problem with the Cubs starting to go for low risk/low ceiling guys rather than the Corey Patterson/Brian Dopirak/Ryan Harvey type guys who will either be great or absolutely worthless. Sometimes it's better just to get a sure major leaguer rather than risk drafting a guy that high that won't even make it.

    I was a big fan of Snider at the time of the draft, but I have no problem whatsoever with Colvin, and even though it may look like a bad call now, give it time. Remember this, some people preferred Juan Cruz to Carlos Zambrano at one point...give it 5 years or so, then judge it.
