  1. http://www.angelfire.com/falcon/basket_1992/ Charles Barkley is the greatest player to never win a ring. I'd put Karl Malone right up there too. Elgin Baylor.
  2. People complain about those overtime systems too (or did until they were tweaked). I'm open to fixing them. One of my biggest complaints about college OT (which I prefer to the NFL) is that spotting the ball on the 25 yard line is not very representative of football. You're already in FG range, you're closing out sections of the playbook, it leads to gimmicky stats, etc.
  3. I can't be the only who thinks the way the phrase "extremely offensive" is being used in this thread is hilarious.
  4. You have to consider the possibility that something is so dumb that even a superficial observer can see it for what it is. And let's not pretend that the PK = good is some monolithic opinion held by all soccer afficianados. Even an ignorant moron like myself knows that's not true.
  5. Who is going to provide these resources to build a new stadium? The Cubs, the city, or a combination of the two. Just like every other franchise that builds a new stadium and the Cubs have more cash than most. I know Illinois is broke as a joke but new stuff is going up all the time isn't it? The new wing of the Art Institute was designed by arguably the world's most famous living architect. I'm sure it can be done. The new stadium era ended when the real estate bubble popped. It is going to take a long time before that sort of funding becomes available again. Also, the type of architect that works on museums isn't building cash machines, which is all a baseball stadium is. Have you seen the new addition to the Guggenheim?
  6. That's the sort of echo chamber groupthink that we all get on Joe Morgan types about.
  7. The people who don't like college sports cite that they want to watch the best of the best above all other reasons. I can't argue with that reasoning.
  8. I think your premise is way off, unless you're talking about sports that people don't follow at all rather than sports they only follow superficially. Just look at how much complaining there is about the BCS and tell me that hypercritical eye is reserved for soccer. You really don't see people tying their frustration with the BCS as some sort of inherent flaw in football that implies it's less worthy of your time and fandom. Same with inconsistencies/frustrations in other sports like balks/leaning into pitches/instant replay in baseball, late game fouls in basketball, holding/pass interference(takedowns) in football, etc. It's entirely possible that the PK system is actually stupid though. I'm not going to make that call but isn't it possible that any sport could have a rule that is just dumb? Once upon a time the forward pass was considered unsportsmanlike in football. NBA Finals games used to be decided in overtime when one team would hold the ball for the entire period because there was no shot clock. Those are objectively dumb things that needed to be changed. In any case, I don't even follow hockey that much, but I know the rule changes made a few years ago were designed ot make the game more fan friendly and up tempo. It isn't a vendetta against soccer.
  9. Because asserting that people only complain about soccer is objectively dumb and laughably inconsistent with reality.
  10. Thank you. You've shattered me of my delusion that my innocuous complaints about the PK system will generate change at the highest levels of international football. I'll now return to more fruitful efforts aimed at producing a college football playoff system by being really whiny on an internet message board.

  13. It's more about demonstrating/teaching someone how to be a professional. Jordan came from a very structured, resource-rich college program while Pippen was playing in some backwoods, rural program with no real coaching or development structure. Obviously the freakishly long arms and athleticism helps too. But he was definitely raw.
  14. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs091.ash2/37911_427241107304_51926382304_4274975_8133691_n.jpg
  15. He was definitely a late rising workout warrior type from a way off the beaten path school. Kinda like Brian Urlacher actually.
  16. We were 4 minutes and change from ending back to back World Cups on what are approximate coin flips. I think it's a problem. And if you play until someone scores then the better conditioned team would have an advantage. I think that's more in the nature of sport than something like penalty kicks.
  17. Weren't the Dutch on a 25 match unbeaten streak coming into the Final? And Spain was like 25 out of its last 27? I don't think there are as many flukes happening as you'd think.
  18. In David Halberstam's MJ book (which is a great if not sycophantic read) he talks about how all the guys on the Dream Team coaching staff thought that Pippen was clearly the 2nd best player on the team.
  19. Rose has already improved a lot on defense. He went from really terrible under VDN year 1 to merely bad under VDN year 2. He'll get better.
  20. Higher than the highest rated WS game from last year and a few million short of Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
  21. Are we still talking about Ronnie Brewer? We could use a cheap, defensive stopper on the bench. I don't want to start him though. BTW, the Bulls got blown out today in their Summer League game. I didn't see any viable players outside of Johnson who looked ok and slimmed down.
  22. That's because root beer is code for hookers and high stakes craps games.
  23. I love Matt Taibbi: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/matt-taibbi/blogs/TaibbiData_May2010/179533/83512
  24. The people who are picked to design and build Wrigley's successor are going to have all the resources they want to design a great park no? This isn't like replacing Candlestick Park or Veteran's Stadium. They're gonna have every great architect salivating over the prospect of building the new Cubs stadium. I'm sure it'll work out just fine.
  25. I'm seeing elsewhere people suggesting that the Hawks are flirting with not making the playoffs. Is that way off (barring an act of god)?
