  1. I have a feeling that Jose Reyes is going to be our Brian Roberts/Jake Peavy distraction of the offseason this year.
  2. Bradley has put up some decent numbers and hasn't been a major reason why this team has tanked. Was I hoping for more power out of him? Yes, I was. But, he has been decent. Has he caused some distractions at times? Yes. But, did we REALLY expect anything else? No, surely not. My biggest concern is his health going forward. I hate saying he's been TOO healthy this season and I figure that he'll miss lots more time next year(and I realize you can't predict those things) but the Cub fan in me expects just that. But, he needs to be here next year, because there is little to zero chance we can deal him and come out of it better than what we are right now.
  3. It seems like Carpenter has really been prone to a very bad inning per start since he's been promoted to AA.
  4. I agree about Brett needing to keep his K's at a manageable level. That said, I think his season to this point is better than I possibly could have imagined honestly. I didn't want us to take him at all, but am to the point now where I am pleasantly surprised and definitely happy about the pick. Is the pitching difference between the Midwest League and the Northwestern League enough to explain the dropoff in walks? I wouldn't think it'd be THAT much of a difference, but I could be wrong. As Truffle said anyway, he's still got a solid walk rate as it is.
  5. I could see BA putting Brett in and leaving Jay out, the more I think about it.
  6. Wasn't Colvin a top 100 guy following his first half season after being drafted? I seem to remember him being in the 80's or so. Just thinking that Jackson has been much better than Colvin was then. I'm starting to think that Brett will be top 100.
  7. Brett Jackson is back in the lineup tonight and scored on a Burke single in the 3rd, after getting hit by a pitch. Daytona was postponed, but did finish the suspended game from yesterday.
  8. If Hendry were certain he could get Halladay, fine. But that is a pretty big gamble considering the state of the rotation. The only reason to trade him at this point would be to use the trade deadline as leverage and milk Minnesota for all they can get. As mentioned before, they can still trade him in the off season if need be. Agreed. To expound, I don't want to give Harden away. I'm not enamored with their system but I would want one of Hicks or Revere, plus 2 of Morales, Slama, Parmelee, Delaney, Tosini, Guerra, Bromberg, or Hermsen. To me, that would make it worth dealing him at this point.
  9. I agree with that sentiment,(we certainly need an ace) maybe sending Harden away can add us some organizational depth, to the point where we could conceivably deal for Halladay and not totally deplete the farm.
  10. Antigua went 6, gave up 7 hits, with 5 runs(4 earned) no walks and struck out 5. Gave up 3 runs in the 6th, when Peoria was already up big. Cashner also pitched 6, gave up 6 hits, 5 runs(4 earned as well) with 2 walks and 1 K.
  11. Teams are most likely going to be tight with money again this offseason, making it very hard to deal Bradley without eating a decent amount of cash. I think we're stuck with him, whether we like it or not.(I'm kind of on the fence personally, because I think he'll probably be better next season) Is he worth 2-20 to another team? If all things are equal, I think that the answer is yes. But, with the constant negative attention he brings with him(some deserved and some not) who would actually WANT him at this point? I just don't see any teams taking on the headache in the long run.
  12. In the talkback under one of the 2 most recent AZ Phil articles on TheCubReporter, a poster mentioned we had signed Lambert, but he parties too hard and was subsequently cut. No idea if this is true, but it could be that he was the 6th lefty Wilken was talking about and that he was cut so quick, it was never even reported anywhere that he had signed to begin with.
  13. Vitters has his 3rd homer for Daytona as well.
  14. Pretty disappointing news, because I can't see this as being a short term type of thing. Maybe the Cubs keep his rights or something by putting him on the restricted list? Either way, I doubt he's back next year personally.
  15. 2-20ish with some incentives sounds almost too good to pass up, based on what you COULD get out of him. The main question becomes are the Cubs really able to take any risks at all right now with their payroll situation being as precarious as it is? We really need some of our minor leaguers to develop so we can have some good, cheap production to offset some of these albatross-like contracts.
  16. Logan Watkins went 2-3 tonight with 2 doubles and 2 walks as well. He's now hitting .351 on the season. I really think I'd like to see him and Lee bumped to Daytona. Go ahead and place Flaherty(at 3B) and LeMahieu with Castro at Tennessee next year, since Thomas and Barney will be in Iowa. Have Lake repeat Peoria at SS with Fitzgerald at 2B. I know it's very agressive, but I think I'd try it anyway. Our middle infield is pretty loaded at this point considering we'll have Barney, Thomas, LeMahieu, Flaherty, Castro, Lake, Lee, and Watkins all in our top 30 next year. Hell, we may very well get 6 of these guys(everyone but Lake and Thomas) in our top 15.
  17. Unless I'm mistaken and reading it wrong, it says "for the left side" not "to his left" which would be more specific. But, I read it as a generic comment probably based on his high error rate. But, I DO agree it's too early obviously to say where he'll wind up eventually anyway.
  18. Cashner is getting walloped. 4 runs allowed so far in the 1st and he's only gotten 1 out. Walked the 1st 2 batters he faced as well. Damnit.
  19. I think that there is a very good chance that this is BP not doing their research. He did just get Best Defensive at his position through BA at High A and I find it kind of amusing that they would comment about lack of power from a 19 year old 160 pound kid who is 6'1 and will certainly put on more weight in the near future as it is. I'm not sure what constitutes an "elite" prospect or how many true "elite" prospects there are right now, but I feel very comfortable to say I expect him in the top 75 through BA next year and possibly at the bottom of the top 50.
  20. I don't think I'd trade Harden right now. I think we either need to re-sign him to an incentive laden deal or sign Erik Bedard to the same type contract. I'd prefer Harden IF we finish outside the bottom 15 worst records, but I think I'd prefer Bedard if we do finish in the bottom 15, since we would be gaining picks by that scenario as it is.
  21. Maybe trade for Crawford and either move Soriano back to 2nd or trade Bradley, if possible? Keep Figgins away.
  22. Castro went 2-2 with another walk tonight. Vitters went 5-7 over the doubleheader. Nice to see them both have a solid night. Hopefully it's the start of them finishing strong at their new levels.....Castro still has yet to K in AA and has 6 walks as well already, which is extremely promising. Considering we have heard glowing reports on him at Daytona, it honestly won't surprise me if he winds up close to the top 50 at the end of the year.
  23. So, with today being the day and all, will we know by midnight as to what else we may have signed? Or is it one of those things where we may see them trickle down to Arizona's roster over the next two weeks or so? I'm assuming we'll hear something on BA or somewhere else if we go overslot for someone, but still figured I'd ask......Here's hoping for some combo of Whaley, Walker, Sheppard, Taylor, and Erickson......
  24. While we obviously don't have much to hang our hats on this year so far, one of the real bright spots is what we are doing in the Pac Rim. Very impressive.
