    Silva was released this morning. Rangers wanted an actual piece or two for Young, not garbage, and we don't have money to make additions right now.

    Ask and ye shall receive. Yeah, he pitched great after the 1st and he's not been all that good in any spring trainings as of yet to begin with. Maybe he's just a slow starter. Wound up throwing 72 pitches, then went to the pen and threw 15 more. About all we can ask for.

    I know its a rarity, but you and seem to be the only ones who agree on this. A backup catcher is just that. Not a pinch hitter, but a lot of people dont get that. Dont get me wrong, Id like Max Ramirez on the team, but in place of Reed Johnson. Granted it was awful seeing Lou use Hill as a platoon player with Soto, but that wasnt Koyies fault anymore than the fact that Jim Hendry gave Aaron Miles a 5 million dollar deal was Aarons fault. Nah, I'm definitely with you guys on this one. And I think both of you agree with me when I say if Soto misses any time, then Castillo needs to be brought up and given the bulk of the time at that point. I also agree that Ramirez should be on the team instead of Reed(beard be damned) but I think we'll stash him on the DL at least.

    I feel very confident that Quade is the only one between him, Dusty, or Lou that would have stuck with Cashner as far as the rotation spot went.

All of whom have shown up in plenty of previous mocks top 10's. By the way, as far as Dylan Bundy goes, Keith Law mentioned in his blog this week that Bundy looked better in his last start than Jameson Taillon looked at ANY point last year. IMB, if you get a chance to see him pitch this year, it'd probably be worth it.

    No kidding. Take your damn ball and go home, Carlos. It's one thing to say that if you had put up a damn good spring and then get by-passed. But, when you pitch as poorly as Silva did, you've got nothing to stand on here whatsoever. PS: I hope it had been decided, because it would mean our FO did something right.

    I hope Coleman is ready for an early season callup, because no team can allow Cashner but so much of a leash, before he overworks the pen by himself. Hopefully, he comes out and gives us a couple of solid innings after that one, to give him some confidence heading into the season.

    AZPhil shed some light on the Silva contract situation. The Mariners send 5.5 mill to the Cubs. Don't know when or if this has already happened or not. But, the big caveat here is IF Silva is released, then the Cubs have to pay him his entire year's salary within 30 days from date of release. So, ponying up 11.5 mill at once is probably not exactly what they're hoping to have to do here.

    Where did that come from? The M's also sent 3.5 mill LAST year from the M's and Byrd's salary last year was 3 mill. I understand that it's all just a matter of accounting, maybe they're saying it like this to make it appear as if the current payroll is higher than it actually is?

    Sullivan still tweeting Cubs responsible for all of Silva's salary, despite reports to the contrary. Of course they're the ones making payments to him, what they do with and how they account for the money the Mariners have or are sending is totally up to the Cubs.

    Bradley is a big guy with a FB that hits 95 or so and has a good power curve. He has a change he's working on. As a bigtime football player as well, he's probably going to be a tough sign, because of the money he's probably going to want to give up football. I'd guess if it's not for that, he's probably somewhere in the 8-15 range, but because of it, I could see him dropping down a little from that area towards the back third of the 1st round. Barnes has had a very solid start to the season and has probably moved up a little in most people's eyes. His FB gets up to 96-97 at times and for now he's throwing both a curve and a slider. The slider will probably win out here as it's been more consistent for him. He has a decent changeup that's still getting better too. He's still growing into his body some, but I've heard potential ace used describing him from a few guys at this point. My guess is he's a top 5-10 pick. Personally, I'd take Barnes over Bradley just based on the money that's likely to be involved, so I could have more left over to spend in the next couple of rounds, since the talent's going to be there for the taking much moreso than last year.

    It looks good for us, but I'd say Miami has as much of a shot as Boston as far as catching us and actually think they WILL pass Boston and become the 2 seed. They're 3 back in the loss column from us, but only one back from Boston. and I could see a scenario where they don't lose again during the regular season. They've won 4 straight and have this schedule the rest of the way........ Houston, at Cleveland, at Washington(back to back), at Minnesota, at New Jersey, Milwaukee, Charlotte, Boston, at Atlanta(back to back) and at Toronto. Boston still has this schedule from here on out...... at Minnesota, at Indiana(back to back) at San Antonio, at Atlanta(back to back) Detroit, Philadelphia, at Chicago, Washington, at Miami, at Washington(back to back) and New York. Much tougher schedule for Boston than Miami the rest of the way. For what it's worth, our schedule the rest of the way is this...... at Milwaukee(back to back) Philadelphia, Minnesota, at Detroit, Toronto(back to back), Phoenix, Boston, at Cleveland(back to back)at Orlando, at New York, and New Jersey.

    Damn right. I was really pulling for him in the 9th and he looked excellent. 2 K's and a nice bare handed play on a chopper by Vitters to end it.

    If they get rid of the mid level, my guess is they'll be trying to trade picks/Korver or Brewer/Gibson or Asik for a SG.

    FWIW, Barney did hit better against righties(.713 OPS vs. .670) than lefties last year in AAA. Maybe a weird platoon of him and Baker is what they do have in mind.

    Hill IS confirmed to be the backup catcher, by the way. I hope we DL Ramirez at least, to keep him around. Not all that disappointed here, since I want Castillo to get fulltime AB's in AAA anyway. Big day for Mateo, I hope he pitches well, making it even harder to keep Silva around. Of course, they could find a way to DL Silva too though, and use him as a 6th starter if Cashner(hopefully report is true) falters and pen is overworked early. That said, Coleman is the better option for this, as far as I'm concerned at least. I'm sure the Cubs are trying everything possible to save ANYTHING whatsoever here monetarily. If someone got Silva for free and just picked up the 2 mill buyout, it'd be better than a flat-out release.

    From Sullivan to Rogers to Rosenthal to Levine and probably a few more guys as well, why are they all acting like the Cubs have to pick up all 11.5 mill on Silva. The Mariners are paying 5.5 mill of that. There is the 2 mill buyout afterwards to deal with as well, but the bottom line is the Cubs are NOT responsible for his entire salary and there's no way these guys shouldn't know that.

    Joel Sherman just tweeted to Keith Law that another team's exec told him that Cashner WILL be the Cubs 5th starter. Very cool if this is true, but no idea how Sherman would get this kind of info and he's certainly among the least reliable guys out there. At any rate, I've got my fingers crossed and if Cashner doesn't come out with a solid outing this time around, I don't think anyone can bitch about him not getting his shot.

    So does Russell, which at least borderline surprises me. Cashner has made the team as well.(no shot of starting in AAA evidently)Last spot goes to either Silva, Mateo, Looper, or Coleman. I guess Cashner's last start is going to dictate things basically......

    Without knowing the rules of all this type of stuff, it's hard to tell obviously, but it's definitely possible the Cubs got lazy and forgot about some loophole, making this a necessity. This happened once before or something, just can't remember what it was right now. As for Szczur needing to be added as a necessity for NOT getting stashed on someone else's squad all year, I think he would definitely get picked up by someone and used as a defensive late inning guy/pinch runner. That said, right now I'd say Szczur is a love/hate type prospect for most other teams. It even goes that way with analysts. Callis loves him, Law and Goldstein see nothing special at all. His backstory makes him a very easy guy to pull for though and if he's as hard of a worker as it appears, I'd say there's a solid chance he comes close to fulfilling his potential. The question is whether or not that is as a Carl Crawford type or a 4th OFer type.

    Conspiracy theory time, since I'm bored.......Stern is going to do everything in his power to make a Heat-Laker Finals for this year. Large probability of a strike next year, series would probably outdraw any NBA Final ever at this point and Stern being worried about the strike means he could also see this as his ONLY chance of helping make this happen, as the Lakers are getting older and if they miss next year, may not make it back to the Finals after this.

    Marwin is a minor leaguer who can play just about any position on the field. He's not any good but the major league team likes to bring players like that to ST games as insurance. Actually, he had such a good offseason playing winter league ball, they're very hopeful he's just a slightly late developer. He just turned 22, if I remember and he's slated for AAA or AA at worst. I think it's likely he'll at least MAKE the majors at some point, maybe even start for a small market team. AZPhil has been pretty impressed with him in the past too. In winter league ball, he had alot more patience and hit .324/.412/.419 in 251 plate appearances. May never amount to anything obviously, but there IS hope for him at least in that he may have turned a corner.
