  1. Burgess throws lefthanded, by the way, making it damn near impossible for him to play any IF position other than 1B.
  2. I don't remember what kind of arm injury he has, but it's been speculated that the Cubs traded for him knowing that it was possible he'd miss the entire 2011 season.
  3. I like LeMahieu quite a bit more than I do Flaherty at this stage. Other than power, I really don't see anything that Flaherty does better than LeMahieu does. And now that DJ has added some weight to his frame, I'm not even sure there's going to wind up being all that big of a difference there. As far as either of them being ready to play 2B next year? In a perfect world, DJ doesn't grow out of the position, but I'm not sure that's going to be possible to control. I think Flaherty already HAS outgrown it, by the way, especially since the Cubs are already supposedly looking at him as a future utility guy. I think that IF DJ does outgrow 2B, they'll look at him as a 3B(even if he's blocked there). i just think it's kind of telling that the Cubs have already made Flaherty a utility guy anyway. But, I'll say this: DJ's bat is probably going to be ready soon and early next year makes perfect sense to me, especially if he adds a little power.
  4. I'm with you guys: I'm much more into the minors than I am the majors, right now anyway. Other than Castro, Cashner, and to a much lesser extent, Colvin and Barney, it's probably just not going to be fun watching a very averagish team, in all likelihood. I'm very interested to see how some of these guys progress, but even moreso, I'm interested this year in IFA and what we do in the draft. To me, that's where we can turn our averagish system(only because of the Garza deal) into a borderline elite one quickly.
  5. With Carpenter destined for the pen anyway and being so close to hitting the majors as it is, I'm actually happy we're putting him in the pen to start the season. Don't get me wrong, with our current situation at the major league level, he'd be the most intriguing option we could throw in there for a few weeks. But, since I don't see him as someone who's got much of a chance of sticking as a starter, we may as well get him acclimated to where he's going to wind up. Not all that surprised with Rhee, maybe he'll shine in this role. Pretty surprised and very disappointed with Antigua though. He went into last year as our best lefty starting prospect(according to BA) and now he's coming out of the pen? Frame not holding up, I guess?
  6. I put this ahead personally, because we're ahead of teams like Boston and especially Miami, when no one thought this was legitimately possible. I remember thinking the 2008 Cubs SHOULD win their division at least and could have the best overall record in the NL. I thought this Bulls team was a 4 seed this year, with not much chance of making it past the 2nd round. Now, I have no clue how far they can go. Don't get me wrong, they COULD get beat by Orlando, but they have a legit shot at making the NBA Finals too. Who's your favorite Chicago athlete at this point, though: Rose or Castro, not necessarily right now, but 3-4 years from now?
  7. Read on chicagocubsonline.com that Frank Batista and John Urich are on this squad as well.
  8. By the way, Trevor Bauer has already had 2 starts this year where he's thrown 125+ pitches in.
  9. According to AZPhil, Daytona's roster has been set and here it is..... P-Belliveau, Ebinger, Kurcz, Harris, Latham, Lorick, Rhee, Rhoderick, Rosscup, Searle, Struck, Wallach, and Whitenack C Brenly, Noble IF- Baur, Cerda, Lake, Watkins, Macias, Opitz OF- Ha, Burgess, Crawford, Perez Also, Cubs released Chris Siegfried and Alexander Maestri today. As far as Daytona's roster goes, some good guys to watch, obviously, but repeating guys abound here. Burgess? Maybe he's out of shape or something else going on? He was killing it in AA at the end of last year for the Nats. Rhee? Totally understand and we're probably not rushing him at all here, he's got time and hopefully he's much better this time around with a full season under his belt after TJS. Lake? Same thing as Rhee, other than I thought he kind of earned a promotion. That said, I've read a couple of guys thinking he may be a better prospect as a pitcher. Callis said he thought he could throw 95, if he were to be switched.
  10. Even if he is ultimately pen-bound, I'd like to see him get some time in the Tennessee rotation to work on the changeup if only to give him a workable pitch to use against lefties. I agree, but I'm not expecting it. He was used strictly as a reliever in the AFL and same thing so far this spring. Doubt they'll try anything with him, since he hasn't been stretched out.
  11. I don't want Starling OR Archie Bradley since this year's draft is so deep. If I can get a guy with slightly less talent(or possibly even the same) I'm spending less, so I can spend more later on, with the chance of getting 2 or 3 1st round talent types possibly for the same money you mau have to spend on just Starling or Bradley. This, of course, assumes we don't have an unlimited budget and can draft BPA every round and not worry about how much we're spending.
  12. http://www.thecubreporter.com/2011/03/31/d-cubs-chiefs-deal-tourists-and-nuts-fitch-park Lots of news from AZPhil today. Released-Chris Huseby and Aaron Shafer Iowa to Tennessee- Chris Carpenter, Matt Spencer Tennessee to Daytona-Brenly, Burgess, Ha, and Whitenack Daytona to Peoria- Gibbs Peoria to EXST- Chen More were demoted and cut, just listed the ones that are noteworthy, for the most part.
  13. Esposito is a mid to late first rounder and Westlake is a guy that's going to be a bunch of varying opinion on most likely. He's a guy that depending on his season, could still go anywhere from the second to the tenth round probably. I wasn't even going to share this, but locally(Hampton Roads area) I went to see a great pitching matchup of two HS kids(Jake Cave and Dashorn Lake) that project as supplemental round to 3-4 round talents. There were a few scouts there and I started talking with a guy who was a scout as well and started asking typical scouting questions about those 2 kids. In the end, I also asked him who he thought the Cubs would take, and he too said Francisco Lindor.......
  14. http://www.thecubreporter.com/2011/03/28/grizzlies-marmolade-lunch Lots of news from AZPhil this evening...... With Castillo getting moved down to Iowa, Clevenger gets stuck in Tennessee for the 3rd year in a row. Marwin Gonzalez gets moved down to Tennesse as well. Conversely, this moves Junior Lake back to Daytona for a repeat there. Ben Wells was moved down to Boise/EXST as well. Last piece of news is Kyler Burke is headed back to EXST as well, to convert to pitching. Other names mentioned in the article as well, just nothing most of us didn't expect.
  15. I think Stevens will leave. But, not until he gets a Duke/UNC/Kansas/UCLA/Kentucky(maybe if they don't get probation after Cal) type of offer. And that ain't happening this offseason.
  16. What were they? Was there serious question as to whether Ibanez could still play the OF? I'm guessing that was his issue, because he was coming off a very solid season at the plate anyway. I guess it could have been age too, but he had showed no signs of slipping to that point and a 3 year deal with regular decline from him still wouldn't have been all that bad. What was it with Abreu? Power loss potentially, since he had been playing with the short porch at Yankee Stadium? Defense?
  17. It's not a matter of what Silva gave us. It was signing an unstable Milton Bradley when there were clear outliners that it wouldn't work out. I'm not even saying I wouldn't have done it either. But, I am saying that it was obviously a mistake and I hope Hendry looks hard next time(if there is one) if he has another chance to sign a guy that looks good on paper, but clearly has issues that can come back to haunt you. If Bradley had signed a one year deal, we wouldn't have had the Silva issue to begin with. And yes, I understand Bradley wasn't going to sign a one year deal. But, if I remember correctly, we had our choice of him, Ibanez, or Abreu and just chose wrong. Expensive mistake, not the worst one Hendry has made(Soriano), but a mistake nonetheless.
  18. It was refreshing to hear; I was thinking it was the most outspoken I've ever heard Hendry. However, you really have to wonder how big of a vagina Hendry actually was with Silva and letting him in on this info. I know the Cubs don't owe Silva anything other than his $$, but Hendry's comments really lead me to believe Silva had no chance from the start. Silva's an idiot and I'm happy, but I'd probably be a little pissed if I were him as well. To me, the only way Silva truly had a right to be pissed was if he had came out and pitched great this spring, Cashner didn't, and he STILL got passed over. Then, I could see him having a reason to be upset. But, he didn't.(thank the lord) It all goes back to when we traded a turd sandwich for a giant douche. Hopefully Hendry learned his lesson with that one.
  19. I think he's made up with them, at least to an extent. But mainly, I want to wait it out and see if we can somehow pry Reyes away from the Mets and put him at 2B. I know Minaya is hard to deal with, but that's who I'm looking at as the biggest possible acquisition we could make this season. Minaya is out as GM. They hired Sandy Alderson, who is pretty damn sharp. I always worry when trading against smart GMs, even though Hendry has a very good track record. That's right, I forgot about that. May make it easier to technically make a deal with them actually, although I'd guess Sandy would want Reyes out of the NL if all things are equal. Hendry has lots of faults, but as you said, he's got a solid resume of trading at least.
  20. I think he's made up with them, at least to an extent. But mainly, I want to wait it out and see if we can somehow pry Reyes away from the Mets and put him at 2B. I know Minaya is hard to deal with, but that's who I'm looking at as the biggest possible acquisition we could make this season.
  21. To me, a casual fan is someone who doesn't know the difference between a 25 and a 40 man roster. Only looks at fantasy baseball categories(-WHIP) as how to evaluate players, has no clue about prospects whatsoever, and can probably only name "star" players off any team other than there own, sometimes even just "stars" on their own team. A casual message board poster SHOULD at least know a little bit about all of these things to me, or at least be trying to learn anyway. If not, it's kind of a waste of time, isn't it?
  22. These are the guys I consider top tier players for this draft personally...... College bats- Rendon, Bradley, Springer(talent wise but definitely boom or bust guy) HS bats- Springer, Lindor, Swihart College arms- Cole, Purke, Gray, Barnes, Jungmann, Je. Bradley, Bauer, Hultzen HS arms- Bundy, Norris, A.Bradley Callis and Law have both said in the past this draft has 15ish or so guys that would go top 5 in last year's draft, so we should be stoked that we'll get the equivalent of a top 5 guy from last year anyway....... I'm pulling for an arm in the 1st and have a guy like Alex Dickerson, CJ Cron,Rickie Oropesa, Jason Coats or Mikie Mahtook from college or Travis Harrison, Larry Greene, or Derek Fisher fall to us in rounds 2 and 3.
  23. Silva was released this morning. Rangers wanted an actual piece or two for Young, not garbage, and we don't have money to make additions right now. If we have money to allegedly back up a Brinks truck into Albert Pujols's driveway next offseason, we have money to spend a few million here and there on some upgrades. Repeating what every beat writer has said. Pujols is irrelevant, because of all the cash coming off the books after this season anyway. Money should be available for deadline moves is what Hendry has said.
